How to Cast A Surface Iron (Recommended Gear!)

Спорт

Quick Video of Captain Ben Florentino explaining how to cast a surface iron further. He also shows the recommended gear to catching yellowtail, calico bass and smaller tuna. Captain Ben Florentino showcasing the new SAIKO pro leader line from AFTCO.
"Let the rod do all the work by letting it load up and then sling the iron a great distance for better lure presentation," says Capt. Benny. "The further you can cast to the fish, the better the bite will be for you. Another crucial part of getting bites is using AFTCO's Saiko fluorocarbon leader. I like using about 18-inches of 50# Saiko for general iron fishing."
Capt. Ben Florentino of Coastal Charters is a Coast Guard Licensed Captain with over 25+ years of saltwater angling experience. Ben is an experienced waterman, and an avid saltwater bass tournament angler fishing the SWBA & SBS series. Over the past 10+ years, Ben has accomplished multiple tournaments wins, top 10 finishes, big bass awards, and an AOY title.

Do the fish bite on lures with the swivel and clip attached to the lure. I’m thinking about putting one on the end of my leader so I can change out my lures quickly. I’m headed out to SCI

I've been really confused about what stick to use for surface irons. I have a 10 ft heavy surf rod and Spinfisher 6000 loaded with 65lb braid -- will this work?

You typically want a conventional reel and an actual jigstick to fish the iron.

@@bradenmatthews9436 Hi, Brad. Thanks for your advice. Since making that post, I've had a chance to go on several charters and talk to and observe different anglers. As you say, a lot of West Coast anglers are throwing irons with a conventional jig stick (7' to 8') and a castable conventional reel such as the Fathom 15/25, Squall 15, Lexa 400, or Avet MXL. This works well for calicos, most yellowtail, and small tuna. For heavier work such as big yellowtail and bluefins, I have a 2-piece Penn Carnage 7'6" tuna popping rod paired with and the Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 (80 lb braid). I tried vertical jigging with a Spinfisher 10500 on a 6' rod and found it arduous. I quickly switched back to a 6' conventional jig stick and the Daiwa Saltist 50H. So much easier! Conventional reels feel easier for heavy cranking.

@@andrewmorke That's awesome you've learned so much. I actually fish a 9 foot stick and some of my buddies fish 10 and 11 footers.

@@bradenmatthews9436 I think I'm seeing the shorter jig sticks on charters because they are party boats. Anything over 8 ft is likely to annoy people in that busy, crowded space. Are you on a smaller boat? Those long one-piece (9-11 ft) surface iron rods like the Okuma PCH and Phenix look like great gear, but unfortunately there's no way I can fly with those in carry-on or even a checked-in protective tube.
