How to calculate inverse proportion
Here's a worksheet & walkthrough video on proportion: • Quick Test Proportion ... . Hope it helps! S :-)
How to work with inverse proportion
This video deals with an A grade GCSE question:
"4 people take 3 hours to paint a fence. How long will it take 6 people. "
I hope the video is useful and please do add any comments below - thanks.

You are so funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
alternative method: 4 people = 3 hours 1 person = 12 hours (divide by 4 to get 1 person so you times by 4 to get 12 hours as it is inversely proportional so you do the inverse/opposite operation) 6 people = 2 hours (times by 6 to get 6 people so you divide by 6 to get 2 hours as, again, it is inversely proportional) both methods work for me :)
thanks! That really helped me because I hadn't learnt it at school and I have a maths test coming up!!!
I have my GCSE in 2 days (how I'm doing it in year ten I'll never know) and as I hadn't done it for a long time, I couldn't get my head around proportion. I'm feeling more confident now, thanks

the way i work out k, is to just do x times y, or in this case t times p. You always get k if you do that.
thanks a million this really helped me

great video but its quicker to just do it like this: 6/4 = 1.5 as its inversley proportional: 3/1.5 = 2 doesnt really explain it i suppose but i personally just find the calculation a lot quicker and easier :)

Hi Izzuddin Hisham good luck with any exams! All best S :-)
New subscriber, man.

Hello! I do realize this video is quite old, but I'm really hoping I could get an answer to something I'm curious about. Let's say we have this proportion; X∝Y and I wanted to express that as X decreases, Y increases. I assume that in a purely mathematical sense, it would probably be; Y∝X/1 but in the way I'm trying to apply it, that wouldn't make sense. I was wondering if this; X/1∝Y would be a correct way to write it? Basically, Y is completely dependent on X, so "as Y increases X decreases" wouldn't make sense. Would I still write this as an inverse proportion, or would it be something completely different?
@3minutemaths
Жыл бұрын
Hi - I think I would tend to write this as Y equals K over X, as that would indicate Y is proportional to X. I hope I’ve understood your question correctly? All very best S :-)

Because of my teachers’ attitude towards me, I never understood this math problem. In fact I just started and completed 50 of them in three days and still felt dissatisfied even though I did all correctly. Inverse proportions were the more difficult ones, especially when I had to decide which was direct or indirect. After I completed the exercises last night and still had doubts, I called friends for explanation. Then, I turned to you. So, I was having issues with DP: increase + increase/ decrease + decrease and IP: increase + decrease/ increase +decrease and when to use that division sign or simply invert. When I was in school and the teachers wrote six of these math problems on the board, I always got three right and three wrong. The Direct Proportions were always right. Today, with your help, I have started a different approach, your techniques. I predicted that this day would eventually come.🇯🇲❤️🙏🏾 I hope all of them know today I am getting 50 out 50 correct.😂🤣😁
