Hal Effect Sensors fail because the insulation on the wiring to them have become brittle and are shorting out. A very common problem that often shows up when the bike gets wet. The sensors are fine, just replace the wires with high temperature insulated wire. Cost about $15 for wire and supplies. I've had 2 of these R1100rt's and both had the same issue and same fix. Shops will almost always tell you a whole replacement unit is needed. Save some $$ and rewire the old (good) unit yourself.

Any Idea who does make them (wiring) i juat picked up an ultra clean 99 r1100rt, and apparently it has this issue. Starts and runs for about 5 mins sometimes more, sometimes less...then dies. Owner did mention it started when he high pressure washed.

Very helpful video, thank you. A few comments on the R11xx series. I had a very early R1100RS. The first model with the then new 259 engine. On the early ones BMW did not get the engine mapping quite correct. It never ran properly, This was a 1 owner, low mileage bike. But... no clear service history. I believe if you buy a Beemer a complete service history is a must. I just traded in my rather old Pan European for a 11 years younger R1150RT, with complete service history. If you are used to Japanese bikes be prepared for quirky solutions. Just one example: adjusting the angle of your frontbrake and/or clutch lever is done in a similar fashion on all Japanese bikes: undo 1 or 2 small bolts and tilt the lever the way you want it. On a R11xx your gave to remove the switches from the handlebar unit (3 screws) and then you can reach an Allen bolt to adjust the angle of the levers. I did this on my RT. The bike is 22 years old and after putting everything back the main beam switch no longer works... I can still flash main beam however. These switches are quite expensive and replacing them means fiddling with a lot of tie wraps or taking a lot of plastic off... Do not get me wrong, stability and aerodynamically the RT is much better than the Pan. The boxer engine on the other hand is no match for the Pan's V4. Same goes for the gearbox (and I do know how to shift on these older Beemers). My advise: if you have never ridden a BMW and are thinking of purchasing a R11xx do go for a long test ride, certainly if you are used to Japanese 4 cilinder bikes.

Hi, thank you for your comments. It is interesting to see how other people see the BMW bikes. You are dead right when you say that you MUST ride a BMW for a good few miles before you can make the assessment, as to whether you like it or not. The first BMW R1100 that I rode was my friends. He lent it to me to do a 400 mile trip on. The first 100 miles I thought "What a tractor" The next 100 miles I thought "Hmm, you know this does have a few things I like" By the time I got home, I wanted one. Bought one a few months later

Thanks for the nice videos. I have learned a lot. Some comments: my 99 model the ABS switch just turns the ABS light off. It is useful if the battery level is low and the system is not working. 2nd comment: the crocodile skin in the front wheel is not nessearily a failure. It most probably is a feature of the telelever suspension system and can be avoided by increasing the tire pressure to some 2,9 bar.

@@whereswaldomansell7313 Hi The rear wheel was changed on the R1150RT to a 17inch wheel to allow easier tyre choice. If you were to fit that wheel then the ABS would go out of sync as it would see different wheel RPM and assume that there was a problem. I suppose that if you disabled the ABS then you technically could fit the later wheel. I don't know for sure as I have never done it or even looked into it. It would be interesting to know. These brakes use a full floating rotor. Bobbins cannot be replaced as this Utuber suggests. Both of these rotors in the video do not have a bobbin problem. The rattled like that when new because they are full floating rotors, frequently used on race bikes and race cars. BMW was not first to use them on street bikes but Ducati and BMW started using them in the 1980’s and 1990s. They are actually Brembo parts. The replacement criteria for replacing is the Rotor thickness specification, as indicated in the service manuals. Everything this blogger presents is in your owners manual, he is not presenting anything not there, except for the Hall effect sensor. Signs for that failing are only running on one cylinder, he failed to mention that.

Yep, earlier oilheads had bad gear boxes. BMW changed them in "97. Gearbox went bad on my R850R at 32K ! Spline lube service is essential and pricey! My R1100RT stripped it's output shaft splines at 27K ! I think these were rushed to market. No where near the reliability of the earlier airheads.

Hi yes but I had an RT that I fitted an early box to from an RS. It was superb. Made the bike much quicker because of the different input shaft/main shaft gearing. I changed the oil on it a lot to keep it in good condition. I sold the bike with it still in and it had done 116,000 miles. I hear a lot of people say about the 'spline lube' problem. I have seen a lot of videos on it, so I know it is true. But!!! out of all the BMW's I have worked on and owned (a lot) I have NEVER seen a spline that needed greasing. I don't know if that means the bikes that say went to the US were different to the bikes that were used in the UK or Europe. But it seems strange that 'spline lube' is a big problem in the US. I had one of these for seven years and rode it all over Europe, it NEVER gave me any grief. I did do lots of work on it though so that may be why

The main reasons why I prefer the 1100 is that they don't use as much (none) oil as the 1150, and for me the 5 speed box is superb. It is a perfect balance for the power and torque that the engine develops. When it became a six speed box on the 1150, I felt the gearing was nowhere near as nice (to rise) as the 5 speeder. Of course the best mod you can do to an 1100 is fit the M93 gearbox from an early RS. It is a much better bike to ride like that. The one I did I had for 7 years, and put 116,000 miles on it. Like a complete twit I sold it.

@@geoffsmith1616 Hi, yes the M93 box got a lot of bad press. It was a straight cut gear set, and was a bit 'notchy' to say the least. But, if it was used slowly it was awesome. I rebuilt the box I fitted to mine before I fitted it, and I never had any problems with it at all. The best bit about it was the primary gearing. The main shaft spun at a much higher rate of speed (where the noise come from) but it made the bike into a totally different animal. Wish I still had my one. I now have a very early GS with the M93 box. It is great. My son reckons out of all the bikes I have ever had that he has been on the back of, the GS is the clear winner. The RT has much better weather protection, though. I had a 1200, and it was a great bike but to be honest it didn't do the things my 1100 with M93 box could do. The later boxes M97 were slowed done with a different gearing between the input shaft and the main shaft, and the synchro had rubbers fitted which made the gearchange quieter. M93 boxes are now very rare.

Hi, 2004 is an R1150RT. These are great bikes too and have a lot of the R1100 qualities too.. But they do use oil, so check that carefully. They 'breath' in a different way to the 1100's They have a six speed box, and a hydraulic clutch. No faults or worries there. The ABS is different, but once again it was the 2006 to 2008 R1200 that had the 'servo' system, which can be deadly. Different front brakes with no 'bobbins to worry about. A fabulous headlight.. Different rear tyre, which is easier to get a hold of. I like the 1150's I have had a few myself. The only reason I prefer the 1100 is the gearbox (can't see the point with 6 speeds) and the oil useage. The 1100 uses none. Great bike though. Thanks for your comments.

Hi, The R1150RT is a great bike. The main differences are the headlamp (much better than the R1100) All the fairing panels except the top nose cone are the same. The gearbox is a six speed unit too. It has a hydraulic clutch too. No problems there. different wheels which make tyre choice for the rear easier. The main difference is the way the engine breathes. It breathes via a twin oil seal set up at the rear of the crank. This is about the only difference with the breather, but as a result the 1150 uses oil.. The 1100 breathes via the front cover and as a result does not use any oil. I went to Austria with a group of friends one year, and my mate who was riding an 1150 said that I best check my oil as he had just put a litre in his bike. What!! I said. I checked my 90,000 mile R1100RT and he was surprised to see that it hadn't used a drop.

When the 1100RT ABS does not kick in and the warning light does not switch off, then run your engine for a couple of minutes, stop and switch off the ignition entirely & then re-start it. In most cases, the warning lights will not alternate anymore and the ABS will then kick in when over the 4MPH threshold.

Hi, a knocking noise from the left head. I once bought an RT that had the same. noise. It was a worn small end that was allowing the piston to hit the head.. Luckily the part that was worn was in the piston, so I was able to just change the piston, barrel and the head of course.. An exhaust gasket would make a 'blowing' sound. The three nuts that hold the exhausts to the head always snap so it can be entertaining to change one of them. You have to remove the pipes from both heads to get them both off together. Six bolts to undo. Look at my RT restoration video, I had all six snap. I show how to re- tap them. The chain tensioner is an over rated mod. I have never had one that needs that. If it was valve adjustment it would be 'tappety' A knock sounds as if it is a piston hitting the head. Be careful and if you need any help then by all means get in touch I will gladly help. Take care.

For these that are interested, You could look for a R1150 front fork from a bike scrapyard (to be able to mount the new brake calipers), have 10 years younger chrome legs, use the much much nicer open Wheels / open 320 mm brake discs (rather than 305 mm) & brake calipers from the R1150, it all fits BUT you need to use the correct "wheel spacer" / lug nuts for the back wheel, it's a thinner disc than the 3 spoke wheel spacer. You can reuse the km/h counter in the front wheel, even the shaft through the front wheel is the same. You do have to see you get all screws, nuts, shims and spacers for the brake discs, brake calipers from the biker scrap yard, because than it gets expensive, like 10€ a spacer and you need 10 of them + spring washers + rings (they are floating discs), no more buying 18 inch tires, a slightly faster acceleration. You can even use the R1150R / Rockster spoke wheels, The R1100R, R1100RT already has the correct rear brake caliper and mount to make it possible. Change the rubber brake lines to steel flex lines is a must and BMW can't supply the original ones anymore.

I have a ‘96, lovely bike. 120k miles but still runs very well! I find I’m experiencing a little bit of directional instability though, it seems very susceptible to changes in road surface or camber which requires frequent correction, especially in certain corners. Some days it seems worse than others though which is a bit odd! Front balljoint and rear paralever bearing is solid and it passed a recent MOT with no issues. Front tyre is 1000 miles old and rear 3000, with no cupping/V-ing/squaring. Headset bearings have no play. I’m thinking it may be time for a shock rebuild-it’s not been done in my ownership and I’ve never had the suspension set up for my weight (I’m 6’6” and 20st kitted up). Any other suggestions as to what to investigate would be very much appreciated!

Hi, seems as if you have checked a good number of the common causes. The only way to find the problem is to get 'involved' with a certain part of the suspension, and check it fully. It does involve stripping parts down and giving them a total 'look at' I have stripped things down before to carry out basic checks and lubrication, only to find that the bearings etc are totally ferk'd. Sounds a lot but I would say dismantle the rear suspension completely. Sounds a lot of work but it can be apart in less than an hour. Then lay out each part and do a full inspection of it. Example, you have the swing arm bearings at the gearbox end. The bevel box bearings, the rear shock upper and lower bushes and the shock it self. Sometimes a bearing doesn't show any play until you get it apart. Then it 'falls' apart!!! On the front suspension, you have the upper balljoint (these can seize and get notchy) The lower balljoint, on the wishbone, and the two wishbone pivot bushes. The forks themselves, and in the front you also have the front wheel bearings. Any of them can be a reason you are getting the problem. Have you got a mate who has the same bike? It would be good if you could ride his and feel the difference to yours. That may help you get closer to the fault. These are the sort of problems I love to attack, as they are not simple, but it is so good when you cure it. Let me know how you get on.

I prefer the 1100 to the 1150 but that is because it has a 5 speed box (the 1150 is a six speeder) and the engine breathes in a different way which makes it use some oil. The 1100 uses NO oil. If the 1150 needs a clutch, then that is a major job on any of the boxer twins. A lot of people sell them on when the clutch is becoming due because it is a big job. I know I buy them!! The 1150 has a better headlight and 'looks' more modern. But in my opinion the 1100 leaves it standing. The 1150 has a 17 inch rear wheel which makes tyre choice easier, It has a hydraulic clutch too which is great. From what you say I would err towards the 850 as the 1150 needs a clutch. The only thing I would think that may have happened is that the 'air gap' may have been compromised by water, but that is only a guess. The fact that it started once it had a time to dry out? I have never known them to do that either. The only thing I would do if the bike was mine is replace the sensor as there may be a problem with your one. A new one for me.

@@RestorationBiker It was very heavy rain and the bike just stopped on the Freeway. What I did after I towed the bike home was I removed the tubberware and put shrink tubing and electrical tape around all the exposed wiring, removed the hall effects sensor and put tape around all the exposed wires too. Install all of it back. That issue never happened since but there was not rain like that since. Also a while after that I got a GS and the RT has been sitting. But I will get it running again soon.

@@AB-hx9hs Hi, yes keep me informed on how you get on, as the more you know the easier it can be to diagnose a fault. Sounds like you had a real heavy downpour when it happened. A lot of times I have been asked to search for a sudden death with these bikes it happened in very heavy rain. So, it may be that heavy rain can cause the sensor to be compromised. It happened to a friend of mine, He was in sudden torrential rain on a three lane motorway at night when all three lanes were really busy. It cut on him, and he had to move all the way to the hard shoulder with no power. That turned out to be his hall effect sensor, once he was towed home.

Guys! I have a serious question! I'm looking for this bike. BMW RT 1100 from 1996. What would be an approx. price for this? I checked in this OTOMOTO app and I found one for 6900 PLN (Poland). I don't know if it is too cheap or if the prices here devaluate faster. Also, what is rhe seat height? I'm 1.82cm Regards!!!

Hi, what a shame. I have had quite a few BMW's over the years, and I have put a lot of miles on them. Never had any reliability issues at all. I did do all of my own work (obviously) and I spent the winter each year doing a certain part of the bike, so that it never let me down which it didn't.I think the build quality was very good until you got to the 1200's It has plummeted since then. I am not a modern BMW fan. Car or bike. I am not a modern vehicle fan for the same reason. I have always maintained that the R1100 BMW's were the best they made. But that might be because I am old eh!!

Hi, thanks for your comment. But I will have to dis-agree with you there. In my opinion, the 1100 engine and box are perfect. The M93 gearbox was the best box fitted to the boxer twin by far. The M96 and M97 boxes (all 5 speed) were not so good. The M93 is a very rare box now. I don't think the engine needs a six speed box. With a five speed box you can use all the torque the engine has (and we all know it has dollops) The six speeder has you arriving at gearchanges far too quick I have had several 1150's and each time the box is one of the main reasons I have gone back to the 1100. I have had R1100's R1150's and the R1200's, and in my opinion. BMW never improved on the original Boxer twin. The 1150's drink oil, because of the way they breathe. The 1100 uses none. The R1150 has got a much better headlight arrangement, I agree the headlight makes the 1100 look dowdy. The 1150 is superb there. Also the rear wheel on the 1150 is a 17" which is much better than the 18" the 1100 has.

  • @RestorationBiker

Hi, The ABS on the R1100 range is in my opinion, the best one they did. Because it doesn't fail like the other systems do. About the only thing that happens with this system, is it will not engage when the bike is first started because of a low voltage reading when the starter is operated. The systems used on later bikes is annoying at best, and downright deadly at worst. Bikes built between 2005 (R1200's) and 2008 are the deadly ones. I wouldn't ride one of these unless the ABS had been removed. It is an electronic servo , and as we all know if it is electronic, it is only a matter of time before it fails. The ABS on the 1100 is 'as well as' the brakes. Whereas on the early 1200's it is 'the brakes'

Wow, this guy is not giving good advice on how to check out the front end of a BMW Telelever system and its components. Best if you get advice somewhere else. Hers’s why: 1. The tire is not a good source of information for front end condition. Front Tires wear on motorcycles based on how the bike is ridden. To inspect the integrity of the Telelever unit, have someone push down on the rear of the bike while play in the front A-Arm joints are checked by moving the fork tubes front to back and side to side to see if there is any play. There should be No play. 2. Inspect the front discs for thickness. They are full floating rotors and high mileage bikes can wear the discs too thin and they will crack or break if out of spec. 3. Not true the statement about fork tube leaks. A leak in a slider tube seal can run down the tube and cover the rotor and caliper with oil, destroying the brake pads and stopping power. Any slider seal leak should-be repaired right away. 4. Inspect the brake lines for cracking. These bikes are of such an age that the original brake lines need to be replaced, hopefully with SS coated brake lines. OEM lines are not the best quality. 5. Inspect the front shock for oil leaks and if it has been replaced. The front shock should be replaced after about 30,000 miles. 6. Inspect the front wheel bearings. Rotate the wheel while pushing down on the rear of the bike while on the center stand and turn the wheel. Make sure the wheel bearings are quiet and feel the rotation to ensure smoothness. Apply the front brakes to see if the brakes feel solid at the lever and easily stop the front wheel. Make sure the brakes don’t drag after you release the lever. If they drag long after release then the calipers , lines or master cylinder need to be serviced. 7. With the rear of the bike pushed down, rotate the front wheel side to side to determine of the front steering head bearings are notched on center. You don’t want to see the steering head bearings notched on center, that defines bad steering head bearings. Many of my tests also apply to conventional front suspensions as well. The differences in the BMW Telelever units mostly affect the response to braking and ride qualities. The “A”-Arm unit bushings and knuckle as well as the shock are the key differences. As far as service life goes, the Telelever unit should outlast the typical front fork system and require less service. I dont agree with BMWs long slider fork oil replacement / change requirement. I think the oil should be changed every 12,000 miles. Dirt and sludge will build up inside the slider in the oil just as fast as on conventional tubes and sliders. The only way to stop the tiny dust/dirt from entering the sliders is with gators on the tube section of-the Telelever. Sam is true of conventional forks. Gators are a thing of the past but are much more effective than fork tube dust caps, which only stop large particles of dirt and sand.
