HOW TO BUY A HORSE AT AN AUCTION|Appaloosa Auction|Did we buy a horse?!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Have you ever wondered what goes on at a horse auction? Have you ever considered purchasing a horse from an auction? Here is a "VLOG" video on buying horses from auctions. I DO NOT advise novice riders, or first time horse buyers to buy from an auction. This takes years of experience and skill. If you ever want to buy a horse from an auction I highly recommend bringing an experienced trainer, buyer, or friend. Check out how I go about picking & bidding on horses at this sale in Morris, IL. This auction was the first one they have ever held at this location and it was an Appaloosa & Ranch Horse Sale . Did we bring anything home??? Watch to find out! Enjoy the ride!
Don’t forget to comment stating which PONY is your favorite!!!!! 🦄🤩💖

    The horse with the bump that you spoke of....is our horse now! we purchased that same day and his name is Buck. He is lovely even with his beautiful bump. When I'm mounting him I can remember the bump side is the side I mount on!

    Footnote: if the horse is saddled have them take the saddle off. Might be hiding a sway back. N just like a car test ride the horse. Yes watch the eyes. Sometimes they’ll dope up a high strung horse too. Debs from Texas

    Had that happen to me. Bought a 16-year-old registered show gelding privately but still got fooled. Some years ago, we decided to look for an older schoolmaster for my daughter, to help teach her higher levels of her particular horse sport. When my daughter tried this particular gelding (with our trainer present), the horse was quiet under tack. He appeared to be exactly what we were looking for. We figured out only after we bought the horse that it had been sedated by its owner the day that we tried him. Looking back at a head shot we took that day, the horse’s eyelids appear a little bit more droopy than an alert horse would have. Overall, he walked, trotted, and cantered well. He was not a cheap horse, either. The private stable we tried him at was impressive and well-kept. We had him thoroughly vetted with x-rays at a pre-purchase exam. For his age, he passed with flying colors. Once we got the horse home, the horse would ride fine for awhile, then rear straight up suddenly, even if only being walked on a loose rein and not being asked to do anything. After rearing, the horse would walk a few steps on its hind legs, throwing the rider forward to clutch its neck to stay on- very close to going over backwards. We medically checked this horse out-there was no medical or chiropractic reason for the behavior. My daughter had posted a picture of her new horse on FB. Luckily for us, someone who recognized the horse responded on Facebook that the horse was a known rearer and had been disqualified from a couple of shows because of it. We were from a different state from where the horse regularly was shown, so we had no clue. With my trainer’s intervention, we were able to confront the owner and get her to take the horse back and give us a refund. Coincidentally, we happened to be videoing the horse at the moment it reared and walked on its hind legs, so we had tangible evidence of the misbehavior. It was a highly unpleasant experience. The owner took the horse back only after we confronted her with proof that other people knew about the horse’s dangerous behavior and she realized that her reputation would suffer if we were forced to sue her. She took the horse back in order to preserve her own good name, not because she was concerned that my daughter might get hurt. At the time, this was a very traumatic experience for us, because we liked the horse -right up until it threatened to rear over backwards. Shae is right. Horses can be sedated, and light sedation does not necessarily jump right out at you. This can happen at an auction or in a private sale. You just have to be as educated and as careful as you can humanly be. And you can still make a mistake. Because we are inveterate horse people, we did end up finding a suitable horse for my daughter. There were just some expensive bumps in the road.

    I love this video! As someone who has wanted a pony since I was a little girl, but who has never been able to afford horses, it's such wish fulfillment to watch your auction videos. Of course, the reality of horse auctions and the serious commitment of owning a horse are very different from daydreams. I really love your experienced, kind commentary and your ability to share the sad reality so that people can appreciate the cute horses without underestimating the effort and discipline that it takes to buy horses responsibly.

    I myself could not go to an auction , I would want to take them all home. My Neice went to Shipshewana auction, she bought a one year old Foundation Quarter Horse. He is now three year's old and the sweetest horse. She has another horse that is half Foundation. Last week she bought a Red Roan quarter horse, she is one and a half. My Neice is on the Michigan Sheriff Posse, so she does a lot of search/ rescue on horseback and parking monitoring and rides in parades. She also goes to horse shows and has won a few times. So proud of her.

    This video just popped up on my You Tube feed. I love watching you guys go to auctions. The depth of knowledge you have is so impressive and I learn a lot watching all your videos. I was a bit upset when one of the first horses in the ring for bidding was ridden by a big burly guy who seemed to dwarf the poor horse he was riding.

    Something I've been super curious about from watching your videos, so hopefully you can clear it up a little for me? You said initially that this was an Appaloosa auction, but there seem to be a real mix of other things in there as well? I've noticed this before when you've said it was a draft auction but then there were all sorts of standardbreds etc as well? Is this just a thing for auctions to try and encourage certain types to be brought along but they will still accept any, or is it based on the quantity of that type of horse they've got in the catalogue etc to maybe appeal to buyers looking for that particular thing?

    I train and sell almost all my horses (check out my website in the description for more detail). However, when I’m buying from an auction I go in with no expectations and I understand I’m buying something in that moment “as is”. I haven’t had one that “hasn’t worked out” because that’s just not my mindset and not my intentions. I go with what works for the horse and there is no “timeline”. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Is there no standard of health provided by the individuals either selling the horse as the owner or the auction? Or is it essentially a “as-is” similar to buying a house? Do you ever bring a doctor or allowed to? Seems making such a big investment spending the money would be smart, also might not be an issue if the doc says it’s minor? Just learning the process so curious

  • @freespiritequestrian

    @freespiritequestrian

    Hi, that’s a great question. Sometimes they will have vets at auctions but it all depends. On average there is no health standard, horses can’t be sick, injured or drugged etc. sometimes you can get horses who are healthy and wonderful though! It’s sold as is for sure. I don’t bring my vet, they wouldn’t have time etc. I usually can tell if a horse is sick, injured, or lame. Then I have my vet examine when I bring them home. It’s always a risk but I do it for the horse not just for myself. I have experience knowing what to look for, what to avoid, and what to take on at the time etc.

    @@freespiritequestrian Very interesting, have enjoyed watching numerous of your videos up to this point and do a great job with the overlay with your speaking on what you see and the different things to watch out for. I am a few years away from ever considering making such a purchase but it appears the price of horse stays within the $500-$2000 range so of course a huge purpose for a veteran such as yourself or a neophyte as myself. With that, would going through a private seller be a wiser choice for a neophyte and what general age of a horse would be wise to start out with? I ask as i will more than likley have dogs throughout my life and would have concerns with wild horses inability to adjust to be around a dog, i have noticed more private horse sellers are providing videos of their horse interacting with other animals, or would a horse up to a certain age be able to become acclimated with dogs running around. I also believe you expressed how the Appalossa horse was one your favorite breeds, and i would agree from how they are built and beauty would be a top pick for many. I Currently live and will more likley contine living in Kentucky for the rest of my life barring and major life changes, leading my to invest in a house with at least 50 acres with trails and so forth. Have read the appalossa is used for working cattle and rodeo events but would have little interest in doing such a thing, so my question is whether that is a breed to stay with or are there other breeds that would be content in the open fields with occasial trail riding. I am 190-200 lb guy unsure if that mattters but would certainly feel a horse no smaller than 15 hands would be able to carry my ass lol, thanks for the resposnse !

    Horses are sent to auction for a reason, the ones I’ve seen have been drugged, or are sick, or have behavioral issues. Your best to buy from a private owner- that way you can get a good idea of how it was raised, it’s history, health history and see it in its home environment. Horses can have a lot of health issues that can be hidden at auctions, so unless you plan on taking a vet with you, it’s like playing the lottery. I wouldn’t advise it.

    It depends on the horse honestly. They can go from free up to millions lol. But right now I would say the average price of a horse that’s broke to ride would be anywhere from 3-15k. The market is high right now, some horses are selling for 20k depending. Then you have show horses that can range from 10-100k. Just all depends!
