Ben Clymer...he's kind of a hipster with his vintage car and vintage watches. And I hate hipsters. But I like Ben Clymer. He's non-douchy with his passions, I believe it's real emotion. I feel like I could show him my watch collection and it wouldn't really matter that much what watches I owned, he'd be more interested in why I own them.

Don't know if he's still non douchey. Read the latest piece on hodinkee about getting delivery of two new rolexes daytona. That was as douchey as it gets, imho.

It's a Bit douchey that he ließ about his grandfathers watch in a different Video he Shows a Classic speedmaster (Not this Mark 40) and tells the same story so i'm thinking if you gonna make up a story stick to it

Mr Porter, thank you. I enjoy these 'short films' so much. The mood of it, the music, the style all underline the fact that men's style is more than a large price tag. Often it's quite affordable. Whatever the case, I appreciated this fine collection of watches & his story. Actually, perhaps the collections story.. Loved this!
The MK 40 was the watch that got me into collecting too, it has such a nice unique look about it, the funny thing about it is you can actually hear the rotor spinning across the room, love it.
i love this guy. he has a style.

+Grant Nicholson +SKY HIGH He didn't start with money or family position. What he does have is the knack for online and social media marketing and he was fortunate to start blogging about watch collecting just as it was starting to gain unprecedented levels of mainstream popularity. He's also been very fortunate at a few key moments, like being the only member of the watch reporting industry to be invited to the unveiling of the iWatch. That brought LOTS of traffic and attention to Hodinkee.com. His was the only outlet reporting on the iWatch from the standpoint of being a "watch publication" while everyone else reporting on it was coming from the technology angle. He owes his success to being talented and shrewd, and as is often the case, there's a good deal of "right place, right time" mixed in there as well.

Grant Nicholson You bring up a good point, maybe I should have used another adjective there...maybe worthy, or relevant...
vintage is cool, yeah, but is not "better" than modern or than anything else, for that matter.. I'm new to this love for watches and I'm not afraid to say that Hodinkee is playing a big role in my everyday life: it keeps me informed, it entertains me and yes, it teaches me something too. With that being said, I sometimes wonder if I too should just "learn" how to grow this love for the old watches and all of that "vintage" stuff, but to be honest with myself I actually prefer the new ones. Ben Clymer himself on another video states that he loves vintage watches because "they have history behind", he mentioned the high probability of a vintage Omega watch from the '60 of it being owed by an actual diver, or pilot, astronaut, or whatever, and that to him adds the "history" thing that he loves so much. For me all of that sounds cool, yeah, but I kinda prefer to get a new watch and make history with it with my own life, not just borrowing the inherited coolness of an old watch. I want new, great mechanical watches to be part of my present life for them to become the heir of MY history. I want to own the vintage of the future, not my grandpa's tools
@strapped2time

I can relate to that. One of my favorite watches is a Jaz Paris quartz given to me by my grandpa
The personallity of the watch must match your personallity. It doesn't matter if it is a Rolex, Omega or Tudor ... a Citizen, Seiko, Hamilton could also works. Expensive ones or affordable ones. Take in mind your budget as well. Family based trends or new trendies. It's up to you.

Question from a newbie. Looking to buy a nice business watch. I saw the jaeger master control with blue numbers. And a different dial called maybe a “sector dial”. Is this a limited edition? How many made? Could you review it. Not much out there but I love how this watch looks.

A very nice video, but taught me the square route of jack about how to go about collecting watches. Here’s how: don’t buy above your means/budget and only buy what you like, not what others tell you. Easy.
Mr. Clymer, I like your style. I like how he's not just a Rolex guy; that his favorites include an Omega Speedmaster and Zenith El Primero... both are my favorites along with the Breguet Type XXI 3817.
Can I know the background music title please? Thanks!

Targa 911, common projects, great style
Same feeling when my dad gave me his Rolex explorer.

I bought my first El Primero piece, it is already special. Don't ask why..
I was always trying to figure out if you have any ancestors in Czech Republic as you’ve chosen the name HODINKEE for your company... ?! To my disappointment it was only because you liked the sound of this particular word - WRIST WATCH - in my native tongue as you were randomly googling and translating from a variety of different languages.... A person of such exquisite taste as yourself should have relatives in that country... :))
Somebody send this video to Pras

Does a "Rolex Daytona Paul Newman," that was personally owned by Paul Newman, exist or has one ever come to the market?

V G!
I'm always amazed by people that work with and are passionate about something and yet can't even pronounce it properly. Zenith is not pronounced "zee nith".
“People get into watches for the wrong reason” am I the only one who buys watches for the sole purpose of telling the time
Notice it’s always the guys who own Daytona’s who say it’s not about the price...
Did he just say Paul Newman's Daytona 😨
yet every watch worth collecting costs a lot of money
@_watcheswatches_1467
8 жыл бұрын
+James Benn Actually, if invested in the right pieces, it doesn't have to 'cost' anything as you can sell for the same price or even more than you pad for it after a year or so. As compared to say sports, where equipment costs a shitload and is relatively worthless after a minute of wear.
This is a rich man!
When did inanimate objects spring to life and develop a personality?
How do you differentiate "being into watches for the wrong reasons" versus "being into watches for the right reasons"? That comment seems utterly absurd....

I hate it when a collector/fan/enthusiast starts to talk about other people with the same interest not being interested for the "right reasons". Always annoyed by that kind of gatekeeping nonsense.
