    Went and spent about $250 on materials and tools at Bunnings today in order to make 7 new flyscreens for the house that we bought back when the weather was cold. Now it's warming up - need to open the windows! Then ran out of time to make them - but that will be next weekend! Thanks for the video, Bill!

    Use duct tape to hold down the frame so like that when you're pulling materials with very little tension to the third and fourth spline install to the screen you're not bowing the material and not only that measure before you cut ,so you'll know what the hell's going on and put some springs and the pulll tabs for the vertical ones

    Great video. Thanks for making. The problem I am having is I have an existing fly screen whcih I took out to clean the window, but I could not for the life of me get the flyscreen to go back into the slot in the window and ended up destroying the flyscreen trying to get it to go back in. So I am trying to re-make the flyscreen but I am trying to re-make it a bit smaller so it might actually fit in the slot of the aluminium window frame. The problem I am having is that if I make the fly screen small enough to fit into the slot then the flyscreen is too small and it flaps around in the slot and there are enormous gaps around the edgets of the flyscreen. If I make the fly screen as big as the original then I can't get it into the slot (yes I have watched a mountain of KZread videos trying to find tips for how to get this style of flyscreen back in the slot. It can't be done). The window is on the second floor so you can't come at it from the outside. I curse the folks at stegbar for designing the window frames they way they did. Poor design is one of my all time pet hates! It should be the all time simplest thing to do to get a flyscreen in and out of the window for cleaning purposes, but it is not. It is amongst the most difficult endeavours a human will ever engage in.

    some rollers have bits at the end to push the spline at the corners in so you don't need a screw driver

    Certainly would be good to have the window measurement and install parts included in this. I’ve made my own screens for years but I’ve come to the conclusion recently that I’m doing the measuring and installing parts incorrecty.

    Thanks again Bill- had a question, i bought all my stuff from Bunnings and just as i go to install new frame i built and struggle, i realise the frame parts bunnings sell appear to be 11mm or so thick and my window frame insert is about 9mm thick! So i couldnt quiet fit it. Have you heard about this before? Is 11mm standard thickness? Bunnings only had the one thickness and i assumed it was industry practice....i found exact matching colour so assumed it was like for like. So i may have wasted lot of time now!

  • @billshowto

    @billshowto

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi, some window manufacturers have slightly different thicknesses. An easy way to get around this would be to use a swivel clip/retainers for the Flyscreens. That means rather than the Flyscreen sitting in In The channel it will sit on on/against the frame and the clips hold it in place 👍

    Pff this guy says “on a budget”, students don’t have any of this stuff or the skills, or the money to buy any of it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I will just have to make one with double sided tape or magnet tape idk. Crazy actually how houses are “standard” without it. Like we all pay a crazy amount of rent to life in shitty houses and lacking everything in return 🤬
