    I echo other comments can believe the amount of detail you have to build for the interior compared to when me and mum built one in the 70s she taught me how to assemble kits and paint ,she built me a revel L1011 tristar it had a cutaway side to show the interior and she painted each seat individually over 200 and in TWA livery when I was 7 around 1974 nice she sometimes looks at this channel ,superb

    Absolutely stunning job.I am in my 5th year of modeling (retired) and have myself quite a hobby shop in the basement. My wife likes it because she knows where I am haha I can put togeather these models and have the patience required but I come up short on the air brushing. I am just learning how to weather and bring out rivets. I have ruined a few models. I guess its more reading and practicing on junk models to get it right!! Nice job again CHEERS

    If you want to practice panel washing and weathering, maybe get some starter sets when they come out again just before Xmas at Aldi and Lidl? They tend to too for about £7 each. They are also useful for practicing airbrushing. The Zero is actually a really nice kit!

    Well done on the model and thw video. I'll be making one of these eventually, as my skills improve. A family member was a pilot aboard one during the war and I have pictures of the aircraft markings and nose art (with him in the window waving). I'm holding off until I can do it justice. (Plus i still have to source some custom decals for it to make sure the markings are accurate)

    Would have been a lot of Mossies! I guess the American point of view is that daylight bombing allows better accuracy (especially with their bomb sights), which then requires a long stable run-in to target when you treat your most vulnerable. So chuck on a baker's dozen of .50 cal guns to defend yourself.

    Great build Gary and a big thumbs up from me. A couple of points- what paint are you using for spraying and what is your thinner to paint ratio? Also you highlighted the engine piping in brass and made a nice job of it. Have you got any tips for this and detail brush painting in general? I’m guessing your figure painting has given you experience with this but it’s something I always make a mess of.

  • @garys_stuff

    @garys_stuff

    Thanks Ian! Most of my paint is Vallejo - the metal spray was their Metal Color set. You lay down the black gloss first then the metal on top. Straight out of the bottles, as the metal is pre-thinned. Otherwise I tend to use a few drops of thinner with any spray - you can guess the amount by looking at how thin the paint is from the bottle. Some, like their dark earth, don't really need any thinning. I think the ratio normally is about 1 drop thinner to 10 drops of paint (if it's model air) - more thinner if it's model colour. With details I tend to use old favourite brushes. Use very little paint but have it reasonably thick - it helps avoid overspill. Best thing to practice is dry brushing, where you kind of skim the brush over the detail in relief, This on a smaller scale is how you can follow things like fuel lines. One final thing is to use a panel was or something like it - it helps bring out details and the wash tends to hide the errors! However, the thing I've found most is that it depends on hat you want to do with he kit. Don't sweat doing every tiny bit of detail unless you really want to. I'm more of a 'smoke and mirrors' kind of painter where the detail is almost suggested rather than actually there. If you watch one of the figure painting videos (next Friday's will be good) then you'll see what I mean.

    Regular polystyrene cement for the bigger bits and extra thin cement for the more delicate ones. I've never had an issue with paint already being on bits. But you can always sand any contact surfaces before assembly.

    Great video Gary. I came across your video because I was in half a mind on how to handle the ball turret. Good to see it fitted in the end even after closing up the two fuselage parts! I will go this route I think. Not sure about your fits in the end but on dry fit of the two fuselage parts, I have gaps in the nose area by the cockpit and also below by the bomb bay. Can't really see where I have gone wrong as looking in every part seems to sit where it should. Was yours a clean fit all the way?

    Thanks Warwick! I use Revell Contact Clear at the moment - I have used Micro Kristal Clear as well in the past. I find the Revell is better if you've got larger pieces as you can let it dry a bit and it retains its tackiness. MKK is better for replacing lost small transparencies as it dries absolutely clear, but I find it thicker to use.

  • @garys_stuff

    @garys_stuff

    11 ай бұрын

    The oil was Vallejo engine oil - the closest equivalent these days is probably Vallejo Engine 73.813. It's an acrylic (water soluble) wash that gives the effect of oil staining. For the fuselage I used Vallejo Metal Color 77.701 aluminium, also 71.002 medium yellow and 71.016 US Olive Drab. The green tail bands are supplied as decals. The interior was mainly 71.010 interior green. Best of luck with the kit!

    Great build mate. Interesting that some of the fuselage structure is in clear plastic did this cause issues with painting? I've had a few minor probs with this sort of model part as the final paint job tended to be slightly different in contrast to the paint of the "normal" plastic. Did you notice anything like that? If so how did you compensate? Thanks for a great watch my friend, 10/10.

  • @garys_stuff

    @garys_stuff

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Ian! I think it depends to a degree on the paint. I have seen this issue in the past when brush painting metallics. In this kit I used the Vallejo metal color system which is a gloss black primer followed by the metallic which seems a lot thinner than, say, aluminium model air paint. Looking at the kit now I can't really tell from the texture where the transparency ends, even though I know where it is! I've only just started with this metallic system and I like it a lot.

    Wow this kit bears little or no relation or resemblence to the 'bit o lace' I built sometime in the 1970s. In many ways its much better, the interior detail and the bomb bay and the spars going inside the wings is amazing but, in some ways the detailing to my eyes is a bit overdone e.g. the ball turret and the rear elevators/ rudder being separate and moveable. If you are gonna do that, they may as well have done the flaps too surely? Even so its a well built lovely model with all those machine guns poking out just begging to be snapped off. ! ... So 10/10 for the build and the masking. Back in the day I put this kit in the bracket of 3 best kits in the airfix range for detail at the time, along with the catalina with retractable wing tip floats and the B24 liberator with the movable ball turret too and full retractable undercarriage as well. My take on this build is that these kits have come on massively and the detail inside is a world apart from what I used to build love it you even get transfers for the propellers. Even so, its odd to my eyes that they will still do movable control surfaces but you dont get separate flaps you can set down which, just seems a bit of a shame to me. 10/10 for the build tho dear chap. One last comment is that if indeed this is bought for a young modeller as a gift who, doesnt actually paint the kits, this would be as much use as a 'chocolate teapot' given the key parts of the structure moulded in transparent plastic.. just an observation too . I guess therefore its only for very serious modellers and very definitely not for the kids.
