I regularly do scales to warm up and then try to improve my picking speed as I'm rusting off some years without playing so this is perfect - simple and sounds very effective. Thank you!

Awesome! Should be a good way for you to combine the two for warmups. Enjoy!

Great lesson, straight to the point. I've been playing for 15+ years and I still have tremendous difficulty pushing 16ths past 140 bpm reliably. This has caused issues for lead playing, gallops, tremolo, everything. It's super frustrating. I think one issue is that I have a lot of trouble playing quickly with a conventional right hand position (right hand playing like your own, with the wrist acting as the lever for alternate picking) because my wrist feels stiff or weak. If I want to play fast, I have to push the knuckles of my pinky and ring finger outward, making a hockey-stick like position with my wrist, and using my elbow as the lever for alternate picking. This method is MUCH faster (16ths at 190+ bpm), but I don't have any control over how I articulate the notes, so my tremolo sounds like crap. So I guess what I'd like to know is, should I try and build up speed with a conventional way of picking, using just my wrist, or try to build control with the elbow method of picking? Have you heard of people with this problem before?

Hi mate, thanks so much for your support! Definitely a super common problem when getting up to those higher speeds especially with accuracy and control as you mentioned. The issue with the elbow picking is the amount of motion required and as you would know gets quite tiring through any longer duration of tremolo. I would recommend trying to build up your conventional wrist picking technique, making sure that you have your forearm, all the way down to the upper palm area connected to the guitar body/bridge. This allows a point of stability and plants that right arm. This will develop into much more control, accuracy and stamina for you in the long run! Best tip i can give is just being aware of that picking hand from here on out. everything you do warmups, drills, covers, songs etc just constantly ask yourself. What is my picking technique using right now? Hope this helps mate, Kind Regards Donovan

I like using backing drum tracks for a metronome so you train your ear to hear the drums as your metronome giving you the full band feeling. Some metronome units have this feature built in and are awesome!

The one shown in the thumbnail for the video is a Rombo pick. They’re a German company & have outstanding picks. I have a few different models myself.
