Bernth, I don’t consider myself super fast, definitely not your level of speed, but- one thing that helped me was reducing my gain a lot. The tone wasn’t always what I wanted for the part, but I wasn’t hiding behind the distortion and I could find what needed fixing much more quickly. This is where I really understood your point about relaxing. Keep up the good work, thank you for the video!

In my case I use to practice with unplugged electric guitar sometimes, it helps me to gain more strengh in my right hand for picking, economy and sweeps, and more volume in left hand for legato, tapping.
The intro ways to increase speed is exactly what I've always been told. 🤣

I remember a Tom Hess article on speed and he had this whole complicated deal with percentages of max tempo that you built on with a certain amount of days devoted to each percentage. Got nowhere, of course, but John Petrucci’s “wind sprints” concept - which is very similar to what we’re shown here - did more for me than anything else.

i feel like it was Steve Stine or someone that said that Running vs walking. speed bursts (even though they sound sloppy at first) was by the far the best way to learn to play fast for me.
I have previously made a recommendation for Bernth's Patreon. It is in some small way my attempt to thank Bernth for all of his help. From my perspective, his Patreon content is truly an amazing value. It is not an "after thought" of a busy working musician. Rather it is the product of a world class guitar teacher that puts time into his lessons. Clearly, he understands how to get where most of us want to be on the guitar. The content is well structured, professionally produced and quite honestly some of the best material I have obtained. Also, there is a lot of it! If you are at all thinking about joining, give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Thanks again Bernth!

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this, James 🙏🙏 I'm happy that I can help on the platform - and that YOU are part of it! 🙂🤟
Thanks for the help. I've been caught up with the Fade to Black intro solo for so long. I broke up the really fast part down into 3 sections and played it at a BPM closer to tempo with a pause in between. I eventually got it to tempo after 2 days from watching. Seriously, thanks! I can finally learn the rest of the song.
This is without question your best and most helpful video so far. Thank you very much Bernth, keep up this amazing work
Love your video lessons Bernth, watching them fills me with confidence and makes me want to practice and play more often
This video couldn't have come at a better time for me since I've been heavily focused on the speed barrier. Frustrating but I'll never give up. I've abandoned the metronome for about 2 weeks and have been playing fast to get the "running" feel which kind of works but I look forward to starting the 2 string exercise on this video today. Thanks Bernth
Thank you for taking the time to make all these training and tips videos. You are a good teacher and I've been learning alot from watching 🤘 keep on keepin on man
I have found the short speed bursts work for me. Great info! I took your advice about getting up earlier in the morning and practicing. It has really helped me progress.
I’ve been learning a lot from these videos, I put my guitar down for about a year and just picked it back up a few months ago and after watching these and practicing as often as I can, my skill level has gone up! Still relearning my Drop C scales and play style though.
For a long time, I stuck myself in the ceiling with 120 BPM 16s. And recently I came to work out 4-note patterns with short shots. Or alternate 8th and 16th at the same pace. Doing this exercise for 30-40 minutes, I raised the speed from 120 to 190 BPM. After such a warm-up, multi-string passages were easily accelerated to 140-150 BPM. And some are even higher.
Step 2 has been awesome for me - I call it "pushing the tempo" and I use it when I'm stuck at a particular tempo. I find that it helps break through tough parts because after pushing the tempo, your target tempo feels all the more easy! I remember first learning about it in John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video.
I love that video! Thank you 🙏 (Although it's not the first time I hear about speed bursts and there effectiveness, this video makes it really clear. That's perfect 👌) 😊
"... If I can do this - you can do it as well." Okay - challenge accepted 😎 hold my Pina Colada
Man, this is cool video, in my experience when i play hard solo lick use to play slow just like most teachers said, but i don't progress, then i start to play fast and correct note and everything is ok. Great video and very helpful !
I saw a Martin Miller video talking about the running vs walking thing. And I totally agree this method you describe here is the best way to build speed. 👍🏻🎸🔥
This video just helped me regain some speed that I have lost over the years. I am still trying to get back to my old speed (clean 16th notes at 250bpm), and I have been stuck at trying to stay clean at half of that after years of neglect.
I usually don't like shred... But shred like that... Love it! And this tips sound so true... Perfect!
Bernth, you are a great teacher and very charismatic musician! Sehr gut, I must meet you when I come to Vienna to buy new guitars and I am inviting you to visit my hometown Weisse Kirche. Greetings from Serbia.
I actually like your step 3 a lot! I purchased that magical copy of Reaper with the built in "can't play what you practiced" feature that is enabled when you press record, so I started practicing with a slower reminder tempo, what I want, and then faster than I can play and being okay with playing sloppy. My hope was to be able to play a little faster than I wanted so recording speeds felt slower. I found that it's helped me get in the mindset so it's not overwhelming when I speed up. Glad it has some validity and isn't a placebo. Cheers!

Ok, you win. I'm not a huge fan honestly of the fast mechanical style, so at first, I didn't think I would connect with you as a student. I have checked out many many other youtube videos of guitar teachers, and while I like them... your methods of teaching seem to be really thought out. I can truly understand what you're putting out. I'm sold.
The production value of this channel is so good 👍
Great content! Great channel! Keep up the good work.
This is a game changer for learning shred guitar. Definitely subscribing to the Patreon :)
I need to do another speed train to see how fast i've gotten! thanks again for another awesome video.
Before watching this any further, I had a personal breakthrough the other night, I instantly gained 5 BPM to smash my threshold of 115 bpm 16th notes just by adjusting the way I grip my pick, got that from one of your older videos. Now I've also realised that by speeding up past my comfort zone playing sloppy, then turning the speed down again it becomes easy. My trouble is my fretting hand now can't keep up, gets tired soon, cubital tunnel isn't helping either. If it wasn't for your channel I wouldn't be trying these things. Thanks much brother\m/

I can't but say THANKS for this video, and for this channel which I only start exploring. I still haven't bought a guitar, only planning. But while choosing which songs I would like to learn, I searched 'How to play fast' And since I am attending the piano the 4th year, but see no significant shifts.. I just asked my teacher to increase my tempo! And not only playing with metronome makes you sweat, but I started memorizing the notes and hands/finger movements and positions.
Great video , thanks 💯

5:05 ahhhh this exercise is too difficult! If I do this thing every day for an hour I'll become able to shred?
Nice, thanks.
great information
New subscriber. As a blues player I have never really cared about speedy licks and riffs and just focused on great rhythm and slow, emotional, melodic lead. I'd love to see some cool spread excercises using mixolydian and blues scales speed excercises :) In two weeks I'm already up 15 bpm ❤️
I have been stuck at 155 bpm for 3 or 4 years now, and i practice almost every day for about one hour on the john petrucci chromatic exercise I try to do it for 5 minutes non stop, and never increased my bpm because i could never last for 5 minutes I thought i was defective, now im going to back it diwn to 1 minute, i can play 155 bpm for one minute easy peasy japaneasy I just finally might make it to 160bpm after all these years I could have reached 230 bpm 2 years ago if i just kept the exercise to one minute Boy, I feel stupid..😮
Was that a rev counter from a BMW? You know what makes me happy? That flat gold RG. We didn't get those on this side of the pond. Thanks for all the killer videos!!! YAARRRGGGG!!!!!!!
Thank you so much bernth , i only played for 2years and i glad i watched this before its too late
thanks a lot, Bernth!
You are the best❤
Well done man. That was perfectly explained. I’d picked up these tips myself from various sources (Guthrie Govan on technique, MAB on starting with your potential picking speed and doing short burst exercises, Petrucci and Rusty Cooley on overshooting your practice speeds to feel what playing fast is like). But you’re the first person to put them all together like this. If anyone is watching this wondering whether this is just another video in a sea of speed advice videos, no! It’s genuinely the truth about increasing speed. I would also say it’s great that you aren’t doing that classic thing of making guitarists feel bad for wanting to play fast. I hate it when people say ‘in the end it’s important to play musically’. DUHHH but I also want to shred!

Yep well said, he did explain it so succinctly and I am the sane as you - worked it outa while ago - but so well explained - even has TABs on screen - so you can start creating your own excersise etc in guitarpro Actually guitarpro program is when I really started to improve - just using it in general When I started 30 odd years ago we had nothing like that Wow that just made me feel really really old saying that 😂 But it is true - I am using it right now to learn something, and just looping them, building the tempo etc So useful lol
Bro you are too kind to share all of this for free This is great Btw I feel like you are a mixture of Michael Angelo batio and steve vai and some other insane metal bands
This is a great guitarist channel 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
❤️❤️❤️ thank you 💓 sir 🙏
Your technique and walk/ run theory is very similar to physical training in the army and the military training idea of crawl, walk, run. I was so bad at running until ait mechanic school was.introduced to a.method that helped me immensely that could easily be transfered over to building speed on guitar. We would walk, at a decent fast pace, around a track for 2 min then d.s. would blow a whistle that meant we were to run as fast as possible.for 1 minute, then when heard the whistle again, resume walking, and so forth. Gradually, the amount of time walking decreased while the time running increased. Im gonna try it on guitar actually !!!
okay, ive been playing for a few years but kinda met a speedblock like mentioned, abd after playing the exersice from 5:20 to a metronome for 30 mins and i can for sure say that i've already got more control! At the time of writing this comment im actually abit shook since ive never felt so in controll over my playing, but i havent even made this a rutine yet - just spent 30 freaking mins somewhat efficiently and I litterally notice an actual improvement, wtf
I used to hold my pick like that too! I've been working on my technique.
This is awsome. Could you just make a video with a lot of very differet execises, to help me (and others) to build a good daily routine ? It would be great !
Omg! Bernth had a BC Rich Warlock, I have one too! 👌🎶
A lot of thanks for you
The contrast between running and walking is useful.

I heard the running/walking comparison first from Martin Miller and Tom Quayle at an Ibanez guitar clinic in Klangfarbe in vienna!
My greatest problem is not being able to keep my left hand close to the fretboard, so I will keep practicing this exercise everyday Amazing work as usual btw
Parabéns!!!!!!
I think martin miller had that analogy . Thanks for he vidoes man !

I remember the great Shawn Lane also saying something like playing faster than you are capable of ( so being sloppy and uncoordinated) but if you stick to it, sooner or later it will become coordinated and precise ( I am paraphrasing of course but that is basically what he said).

I chuckled at the “walking a bit faster every day to train for a marathon”. The most ridiculous sport in the world, race walking, looks exactly like that. People who never broke the speed barrier and transitioned to the running motion. Instead they have pushed the walking motion way beyond practicality and look like semi paraplegic ducks.
Very nice. Even with my Age and Arthritis I can play faster with this training. Great!!!!! Thanks
