How to Build Hills and Bend HO Track / Can I Build The Corkscrew?

Ойын-сауық

This video covers how to build hills and elevations for your Slot Car layout. Plus how to bend and manipulate track to smoothly contour to your hills and elevations. In addition to this I see if it is possible to build a close 1/64 scale representation of the famous Laguna Seca Corkscrew including the proper scale height and drop of this iconic section of race track…

    I know it’s an old video. But it gets current views from people like me just getting started. I have Carrera Digital 132/124. I am designing my layout to incorporate some of my favorite sections from different real tracks. I found a map of the corkscrew that has all the engineering data. Elevation, bank, percentage of bank and grade, radius of turns and distance between turns. Something I noticed about the track pieces. None of them are perfect. There is a variation in the set of each one. By going through the stack prior to the build I can pick pieces that already have a set in the direction I need to bend. Radius, bank, and grade all change throughout each turn. I will have to mock up the turns to see if it will be possible and drivable. It definitely will require mixing different R numbered turns as well as flat and banked pieces. It should be fun. The full drop from turn 8-9 scales out to a little over 4’. I would be interested to see if you have tried mixing straight and banked pieces in the same turn.

    Cool project, you can combine straights with banks but it tends to take away from the flow of the corner. It is possible to split the track and create your own custom corner, it takes some thinking and thinking outside the box but it is possible

    Sorry I realized after your response I was meaning mixing flat and banked turn pieces. I know the transition between turns is not level. One thing I like about some tracks that flow is the slight rise in elevation prior to actually diving into the turn. I also found some conductive metal epoxy that I can use on the rails. It was designed to eliminate some soldering on circuit boards. Experimenting is all part of the fun. Thanks for your videos

    You should have made it a 4 lane track, if you're going to do all that work. The problem with bending that type of track is it's going to be very noisy and a lot of clicking at the joints. If you were to bend the track away from the joints and have the joints flat and square it would be better. The top of the cork screw joint needs to be flatter. You need to get rid of the kinks. Bend each piece in the middle so the joints will join flat together. Or you could file down the high spots on the joints. Otherwise the cars are going to want to jump off the track, especially at the top and bottom of the cork screw. 18 and 15 inch radius turns would have been better for the cork screw. It would be a more sweeping turn. Good luck with the build!!

  • @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your input Randy… a 4 lane would have been nice but I was limited on room for every I wanted to build. Actually the joints are good, no clicking like you would think. But putting cork under the track would definitely help…And yes bending the track away from the joints word best , but if you take your time you can achieve a joint between the tracks that doesn’t have a ridge. And finally 😂 , the corkscrew is a bit different on the approach than the actual real thing , but it’s what I had to do because of the way I store the track. When it’s up I have to contend with the amount of clearance from the other track. But it’s a small difference… thank you for watching 😊

    @@randy1817 thanks Randy… I might try something on the approach of the corkscrew. I would really like to have the jog in the track at the top of the hill. Might chop up some turns to create this. If I do , it will be something that I film to show the process. Didn’t want to show this right off the start since it is an advanced modeling skill. I like to try to work projects up to harder points in steps so it doesn’t frighten guys off about trying something out. But thank you for your input on this video, I do appreciate it…

  • @johnparker2062
    @johnparker20622 жыл бұрын

    Nice job with the corkscrew. Suggestion though, if you continue to have issues at the top of the hill prior to the left hand turn. The straight up to that point is not as steep as you have made it. Which would take off even more tension on the track and twist the cars for bottom out on. Plus there is actually a small right just prior to your left. Amazing though, looks like you did the entry to turn 9 after the corkscrew. Great step by step explanation. Now I just need to figure out how to get my 1/32 router track corkscrew to work out.

  • @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks John…. Yes the hill coming up is a little off , I had to swoop it some to make a little room when I lift the track to store it. Wanted some room for a bit of scenery… the top of the hill is lacking the slight right hand curve before the entry. Unfortunately HO , or at least Tyco doesn’t have a curve like this , so I’m going to create this effect with the edging on the side of the track and let the track lane look like an apex through that bend… only thing I could think of… 😂… I have been pondering this for 1/32 scale for some time now and figured out how to make the corkscrew for a router track. But fair warning ⚠️…. It’s huge… 😂 59 feet equals 22 inches … or if you go for the full section…. 109 feet equals 40 inches…. 😂

  • @johnparker2062

    @johnparker2062

    No. Mine is not going to be actual scale either. It's going to be between 6 to 9 inches in height. Love how your designing your track after other sections of track. I've been doing it that way for years. Current project has corkscrew Laguna, carousel Mid Ohio, Magiet and Beckett Silverstone, bullet oval, Lemans starting (with pit lanes), small pinch section, 3, 3.5 and 4" lane widths, some banking, 3 lanes and a bridge. I've got a lot of ideas for decorations and lights.

    I'm really loving this track so far great work. One question I'm curious about though. When it came to the Laguna section how come you didn't heat the track 1st and bend It like you did in the straightaway would that have made it easier?

  • @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks James, with the corkscrew hill being so extreme with the drop in elevation and the amount of bending the track had to take , I needed to manipulate the entire section of track “ slowly “ , one thing about heating the hard plastic tracks is finding the sweet spot where the track will bend without distorting the surface area , plus heating the track removes the resistance in the plastic. Making the bends much more difficult to make smooth and not kink do to the plastic being softened up. By bending the track cold I could work the entire track to a consistent shape and then come back over the top and heat the track to relax into the desired shape. Plus if the bending wasn’t going to work, it is much easier in salvaging the bent track and restoring back to it’s original shape. Once this track is heated it takes on the shape that it has been manipulated to. Hope this explains your question.
