How to build cafe racer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A Cafè racer is being worked on here at DeBergerac ! Jim walks us though how he custom built Ducati parts unto a Kawasaki frame. It can be a little tricky doing custom builds from parts that are from two different companies. But here at DeBergerac Design we always find a way! Looks great. Brings back memories. I used to work on/build stock and custom bikes in Gulfport MS in 98'. My favorite build was a rat bike. Sportster frame w/ Sportster 1200 engine, Honda front end w/ the tube shocks -raked a bit - no rear shocks, used angle iron to make it a hard tail (seat was maybe 2ft above ground) - and made it a ratchet suicide, had to custom make pedals/clutch. Finished it off with a 4ft tall pitchfork sissy bar on the back. Imagine that one! Look forward to the next video!

    Hello Path! Sounds like a bike made for the iron man contest! Send me a photo if you have one. Our bike is definitely not going to prove anyone's manhood;-) Glad you enjoyed the video! Talk soon brother, Jim

    I wish i had a pic of it. Back then I worked for a (bike) brother who owned American Motorcycle Technology in Gulfport. (He rode a 1937 Flathead military) His small business was in the red so I worked for no pay for over 6 months to try and help. Anyway, the rat suicide to my amazement quickly became a desired ride so it was sold. (was supposed to be "you build it from spare parts it's yours"). Last time I saw him. Oh well.. Look forward to all your vids! Take care..

    Dear Jim, Good to see again & what's more what tickles me pink are one off motorcycles. It's been quite a while since you first introduced us to your newly found skill. I must say the little that I can see already looks pretty promising. I am confident that the end result won't be disappointing either. If I didn't know any better, I'd be willing to bet my last Dollar ( in spite of the fact that I do not gamble) that you know what you're doing. I am not entirely sure that I would have lost that Dollar after seeing how well you carry yourself. You certainly are very convincing & equally sure that over the course of your life, you've learned a thing or two on your travels. Your skillset certainly helps you I dare say to undertake different project such as this. I am pretty sure your friend will be so delighted that he might feel compelled to give you a kiss (so watch out!!!) As always one can only give a thumbs up (unlike Cesar!). Do let us know the outcome of the final result. Kind regards.

    This is good to be a really cool one off bike! It has been a neat project and as far learning new skills, not really sure about it being new. I always look at any project in such a manner that if someone else has done it already we probably can improve it. There are few things new in the universe so all the information is already out there, we just have to be able to listen and receive it. If Bernie does not give me a big sloppy kiss after he has riden his new machine, I will be greatly disappointed:-) Jim

    Dear Jim, Thank you very much for your courteous reply. given your skill set & what you currently do; I am pretty sure that improving is what you are mostly hired for. With this optic in mind, it's not difficult to see that you are the perfect person to approach to consider undertaking doing an original project. If De Bergerac Design is not your own, you certainly are it's best ambassador. Now as for that dreaded sloppy kiss, personally I'd run a mile but to each his own. As always an absolute pleasure to communicate with a like minded soul. Take care & kind regards.

    Just curious how you would go about making a custom stem? I watched your previous video in which you modified the Kawasaki stem, but what if you needed a full custom stem? How would you even start measuring dimensions? and how do you know how far up your threads need to be etc? Thanks love the video by the way!

    Very interesting question, not a whole lot stumps me but you certainly have in the regards of why you need to start from scratch? In my humble opinion the most important part of the bike is the stem. I can think of a lot of parts that could faiil on a bike and you can still walk away relatively unharmed. Yes I do have personal experience with this and fortunately I am still here :-) If the stem fails, all bets are off. I am more than happy to facilitate a safe way for you to do this, But we need to talk over the phone or FaceTime etc. I’m pretty easy to get a hold of and I’ll talk to you then. Jim

    Was this ever finished? or another part? I didn't see any other parts on the channel? The video is fun. I am building a 78 KZ650 but utilizing a 2006 GSXR 600 engine. I am currently at the same point as you with the swing arm but I'm converting it to a mono shock. Once its complete I can line up the engine and rear wheel spocket. Cheers.

    An interesting way of mounting the swinging arm, however there is no bushing. The Ducati swing arm normally grips the spindle and then the spindle bears in bushes mounted in the back of the crank case which is a unique method to Ducati, the,way you have done it will look great but won’t last long, dodgy engineering.

  • @YachtShopCreations

    @YachtShopCreations

    I agree with you Joe, Bernardo, whom is the owner of the bike and also going to be the end user, also knows this. He knows this is going to be a wear point that needs to be greased often and will eventually need to be replaced. It's called a trade off for not spending a lot more money. Dodgy engineering would be doing something that nobody was aware of or trying to hide something. I do however understand the people who don't have the ability to do their own projects are the largest critics on KZread. Be well, Jim
