How to build an Ottoman Bow - #3

To be honest, I was pretty nervous about unwrapping the bow. But I don't want to give too much away. Take a look for yourself. And as always, you'll find detailed instructions in the subtitle.
Here are also the exact dimensions. The numbers in brackets are always the data WITHOUT sinew covering - so only wood and horn together. "w" stands for width, "h" for height. And the centimeters are calculated from the exact center to both sides to the string nocks (60cm) in 5cm intervals. So we start at the handle center with 0cm:
0cm: w 24mm (22mm), h 33mm (30mm)
5cm: w 21mm (19mm), h 22mm (19mm)
10cm: w 29mm (27mm), h 17,5mm (14,5mm)
15cm: w 29mm (26mm), h 14mm (11mm)
20cm: w 29mm (26mm), h 12.5mm (9.5mm)
25cm: w 28mm (25mm), h 12mm (9mm)
30cm: w 27.5mm (24.5mm), h 12mm (9mm)
35cm: 26mm (24mm), h 13mm (10mm)
40cm: 25,5mm (23,5mm), h 14mm (11mm)
45cm: 23mm (21mm), h 15mm (12mm)
50cm: 21mm (20mm), h 15mm (13mm)
52.5: 18mm (-), h 17mm (-)60cm: 10mm (-), h 17mm (-)
Have fun - and if you have any questions: just ask.Oh, and please subscribe to my channel if you don't want to miss part 4. And leave me a like. Thank you mucho!

    I felt great pleasure and happiness in watching this Ottoman publication, which you carefully and traditionally produced, through its production stages. Also, as a Turk, I felt very proud. I am grateful and thank you very much for keeping this tradition alive and giving us the opportunity to follow it step by step. I offer our love and respect from Turkey. The real Ottoman archer.

    @@m.bitious yeah true enough but maybe if you cut the sinew in that v shape so it goes to the outer parts of the handle then the middle of the v could carry on down the length on the bow, or i mean you could just put them on after for looks and wood fill it to look one with the handle. either way if you do it tag me id be interest to see. i subbed

    @@burakbahadir6963 Don't worry, I will continue and you will see more 😊. Next project is already in the planning (it will be a flight bow ... crab bow style). But first I have to finish the Ottoman (unfortunately the paint coat takes forever to dry 😞 so I still need to wait with the artwork). And it's good to know that some appreciate my taste in music 😀. Cheers my friend

    very carefully worked, question how thick is the horn now?

  • @m.bitious

    @m.bitious

    Жыл бұрын

    At the outer edges 1mm. At the centerline aprox. 4.5mm (Sal) and aprox. 3.5mm (Kasan) tapered to 0mm at the Kasan-End (length of the taper aprox 5cm). I hardly didn't take any horn away and instead decreased the wood. A little bit more horn means more stability - but the thinner wood will mean a higher chance of string-follow. I can live with that 😉

    😂I know, my friend. I had some setbacks with the sinew😢. Tomorrow I start with the first of 3 layers. In between I have to wait for a week for proper drying. So unfortunately you'll have to wait 2 more weeks. Cheers

    I will consider it 😉. The thing is, that after the third layer the bow has to dry for 4-6 month (depends on the sinew-layer-thickness) because the moisture travels through the wood and has to be gone before tillering. We'll see. On the other hand: what are two weeks more 😅. When I started this project I read it could take up to a year. I'm starting to believe that 😅

    So I've ben following your videos and I chose hickory for my wood core ,I am waiting on my Buffalo horns to arrive, I'm using fish blader glue I hope it works ,I have hide glue made from American bison hide and hooves too .which wood you use??

  • @m.bitious

    @m.bitious

    2 ай бұрын

    Hey my friend, I would use the hide glue for the wooden core and for applying the horn, because it has a high durability. For the tendons I would use a mixture of fish bladder and hide, because you need to add flexibility to the glue and the fish bladder glue doesn't gelify as fast as the hide glue wich makes applying the tendon layers way more easy. I wish you a lot of fun with your project. Please keep me posted how your bow turns out. All the best, my friend

    Thanks my friend, and may the peace be with you, too. Up until I started with my first Ottoman Bow my favorite type of bow has been a traditional self bow - made from wood with character (meaning lots of knots and twisted structure - as I had it with the black locust stave from my snake skin backed bow) - because in my opinion that captures the beauty of nature the most. But now my favorite type of bow is the Ottoman, because of its complexity, tradition and its many different natural materials (horn, sinew, wood, leather and so on). I think the Ottoman is the perfect combination of tradition and artwork. I absolutely love it and decided, that my next project will be an Ottoman as well, but a lighter flight bow. What's your favorite type of bow? Happy New Year, my friend ☺
