How to build an Ableton Live Set with multiple songs

If you plan on using Ableton Live on stage for stems, multitracks, or backing tracks, you'll want to load multiple songs into one Ableton Live Set for the best experience. To have access to all your songs from that set, and for the best transitions, you don't want to load indivual song files.
In this video, Ableton Live Certified Trainer, Will Doggett, shows you how to load multiple songs into one Ableton Live Set, so that you can have the best possible experience with tracks on stage.

Hi Will - your set of videos on using Live for Backing Track is really fantastic. I have been struggling trying to do this on my own for some time and finally found your videos. Thanks a lot for the great work. Question: I'm nervous of having a computer crash during a live show and I have to ask why you haven't considered using a hardware/recorder/mixer for this job? Something like the Zoom Live 12/20 or the Tascam 12/16/24 units? Ableton is such an awesome DAW with all its instruments and effects but its set up and control requires a lot of time and equipment. I have everything I need to use Ableton8, SLMk II controller, X-Touch etc. but it's a lot of "stuff" to set up and connect when a multtitrack recorder can basically do the same job. Thanks

You have no idea how this has cleared up things for me thank you! I am gonna watch some more videos of you as this is my first one but definitely leaning to becoming part of your community :). I have a question about this one; so I was wondering if you're able to trigger midi clips in your session view whilst having your "backing tracks" running in arrangement view? I'm guessing yes but just wanted to check. I have done a couple of giggs in arrangement view only while playing my piano and a looper but if want to be able to put live fx on my drums as wel with my akai apc mkII controller. This has been very inspirational, live setup can be daunting so seeing your passion through the screen is really comforting!

Thanks Will this is great. I understand the benefit of not having to change the master tempo manually with automation, but if I'm using Chain Selectors with Samples tether to my SPDS via midi then I still need to do automation on a set level as opposed to in each song template? Is that correct. Thank you

I like so much your way to organice the stems and songs, but I have a little question, how do you process the mix of the songs in the projet for the live performance, with all that channels? I mean, when I used stems I always put a compressor for the bass with a sidechain from the kick, my question is, do you have to make a really great mix of the songs before you export the stems really? Thank you

Excellent 3 part mini series, really helpful thanks. Can I ask when playing in a live situation with say 8 separate outputs going to the sound guy how would you normally route each output, for example, would it be 2 mono outs for drums and bass then 3 stereo outs for pads, noises etc.

If I was performing in a live looping setup I would consider a grid based controller and session view. For arrangement view, Grid Based controllers aren’t a great fit, and I prefer a simpler control setup using 4 buttons only.

Amazing! Just a few questions If you are putting your signature arrangement in the song template why do you need to re-do it in the set template? Does tempo changes from the song template paste to the set template - and if you need to move the song a few bars does it move the tempo (automation) with it? Can you paste the song to the same track as the previous song? So that you dont have them stepping down and taking up more tracks? Hope these questions make sense!

Great video! Didn't see the use of key mapping location markers until you started dragging each song in and using those markers to quickly cut and paste tracks everywhere. One thing I'm super intrigued about now is the possibility to "train" Ableton to recall locators after transferring the song into the set, that's one thing even Clyphx cannot do, so I'm very curious how you do it.

Very good explanation, thank you! I’ll use it for our band live set. We have enough time signature and tempo changes on the go. Especially I like several your tech, like stop clip, section making in clips, overall idea NOT to use session view as working area on stage, as well as your method of importing sets to final live set. We use behringer XR18 as our summing device. So I have a separate track with all XR automation. That’s why we don’t need separate each song to different return channels. I don’t use in live sets returns ch at all. We have external devices like outboard audio interfaces with iPad software simulation for guitar and bass. As well as guitar sim and MIDI JAM with soft synths inside Ableton. Everything has their own separate automation track. As well all drums come to mix from EZdrummer live drumming via midi from Roland V-set. Main advantage is absence of sound operator person and consistency of the sound picture from stage to stage. Let it be club, fest or rehearsal at home. I use cal mic and “tune” venue before show making EQ curve in XR18. Because we had good enough final mix at home, we have same sound on public side on live show. We keep calmly stage environment, coz in ear monitoring hardwired for absolute minimum delay. Just LR stereo cable to PA. Any PA).

A question about your 3-steps framework: with your method, if I have 25 songs to put in the live set and each song could have 10/15 stems, I will need from 250 to 375 tracks....Isn't it bad for computer performances or system stability?

Usually I would mute him in the stems but since our set has 25+ Songs this is hard. Would you find the solution in routing? All the rhythmguitar on the same Output so you can simply mute it and all the bass, leadguitar etc on another output? Sorry if you mentioned this in the video, it was a lot of information and I don't recall it comming up.

I am truly shocked (and annoyed) at how few videos are on youtube about people using and explaining ableton live for LIVE. haha. such irony. I bought Ableton for performance. Yet, it seems the vast majority of Ableton users who make KZread videos all ramble on about how to use ableton live as a traditional DAW. Well, I got news for you, arguably Ableton aint the strongest kid on the block for traditional DAW composing. Its literally made for performance, yet so many KZreadr's do not talk in this context. Thanks for this video, and the other you mention on your channel about performance. I will check them out

Ableton by far is the industry standard for playback, so I would encourage you to go that way. There's other software that can playback audio, but Live is the only one that really lets you "perform" with pre-recorded audio.

I have some pre-programmed drums, bass, etc. but I play and loop record live guitar parts, as well as doing some live piano and of course, live vocal. I like the layout you've set-up above (I've done it before in Apple's Mainstage, though it wasn't stable enough) but I'm wondering if there is a way to still live loop audio tracks while using the above layout you've shown? I have a Novation XL controller which means I can mute, solo, etc. channels live. Thanks :)

I'm new to Ableton and found this video while searching for best ways to implement Ableton for live performances. Very great content and presentation! A little overwhelming I must admit as I need to watch the other videos and continue learning the software to get more up to speed. I have what may be a beginner question based on my use case, and figured I would take a shot and pose it here in the comments. You mention configuring arrangement view based on live sets. I am a solo performer that is looking to use Ableton for backing tracks while I play other instruments and sing. My approach will be linear as there are clear parts and really no need to repeat sections. An example is I may want to play acoustic and sing on a song and have drums, electric, keyboards, backing vocals pre-recorded to launch and then another song maybe play keys via the midi controller (Novation Launchkey MK3) while singing and have guitar, drums, bass pre-recorded. My sets vary greatly based on the audience as I do covers in bars/restaurants, so I normally have my entire set list avail out of the gate in Forscore to choose from so if it's slow and a lot of people are eating I'll start more mellow, if people are already into the night or large party I'll get quicker into my upbeat selections. Given this use case, is arrangement view still the best option and how would you recommend dividing projects given my sets are put together on the fly?

  • @fromstudiotostage

    @fromstudiotostage

    Жыл бұрын

Since you’re running tracks I would 100% use arrangement view. But don’t be afraid to repeat and have flexibility, just because it’s linear it doesn’t mean you’re locked in.

I'assuming having a live set of 50-60 songs would not be stable depending on the computer, but if the cpu is able to handle it, is it feasible to work with that many markers? Thank you again for taking the time to reply and apologies if these questions are premature based on my level of knowledge of Ableton at this time.

Is there a way to preset the loop option for an 8 bar percussion stem, and then do the same for the next three songs Im using loops as my tracks and I want to be able to transition to the next song without having to select what I want to loop in between songs? Can I preset what I want to be looped in each song so I don’t have to do that every time the song changes?

@@fromstudiotostage Let’s say I’m finishing the first song, and I want to start the next loop that’s at a different tempo and time signature. If I hit “2” for song #2, how will it know to loop that second percussive loop as well? Can I preset the loop feature for all three songs, or do I have to select the loop every time I transition a song if I choose to run tracks this way.

I’m having issues with the stems properly lining up when I drag them into the set and drag the song into place. I have a lot of parts in some stems “deactivated” for when someone in the band is covering that part. Those seem to never line up. Sometimes the entire song is out of place. Do I need to consolidate all the stems that I have part deactivated? Anyone else have an issue like this?

I think one key thing you are missing is the vocal cue of the song name for every song. Sometimes the wrong song can be cued, so the person cueing the track has time to kill it. Also maybe a band member gets lost and is unsure of the next song.

Wouldn't buildinng tracks this way quickly max out abletons max tracks count for projects? 256 total so lets say you had a set of 25 songs. but your average tune had 12 stems. you could only get 21 songs in. That make sense?? Am I thinking of this correctly?

What about song structure positional parameter shortcuts for working in session mode only and scene launch dictating verse chorus shortcut tagging working diagonally on the grid with 64 midi only channel strips for live looping from nothing other than form of song and not linearly? Ableton Doesn’t seem to be designed that way. More of an excel spreadsheet where everyone is finishing their tracks as bounced audio only stems with linear motion only on 8 channel strips.

Great video but the problem with this method is that it won't import the tempo track in the midi clic!!! I tested it and in the song file the tempo has many changes, but when I drag the song set in the live set for the show, the tempo automation does not follow!! Imagine having to rebuild the tempo lines of 15 song, when most of them have many tempo change... It sounded like an amazing technic, but now I dont know how to go about. Dont know if I am just gonna waste my time and should just drag and drop every stems and import the tempo track in a full live set instead so at least I have my tempo tracks? Then I would lose time over routing. Or do this technic and reimport every clic track with the tempo because Ableton Live isn't capable to import the tempo from it's 'own' song files... Disturbing when you're relying on a software that's supposed to be pro, I would have thought they know what the hell they're doing. Another disturbing fact is, when you drag and drop your audio files, it does not copy them, it 'takes' them from the original location. I have never seen anything like that!! Logic copies them leaving intact the original files in their location. We spend so many hours to export stems so they are just right, when then Ableton delete them from their original location, as if we then have no more back up. I did have a back up luckily, but this is unthinkable. Thanks for your input....

LOL just kidding about the angry and the basement BUT I really do prefer session view and have found it much simpler to create a template and drag songs into that. @@fromstudiotostage OK so after using Session view for 20 yrs I decided to take the plunge and follow your workflow for building a setlist and using Arrangement view. I have to say that both views are not without their issues. In my opinion, Session view is WAY easier on the eyes in terms of simplicity. Arrangement view can look very overwhelming, especially if you add locators for all the sections of all the songs. Copying and pasting sections is WAY easier in Session View. With all that said, I think it's going to be better long term for us to use Arrangement view in terms of flexibility. Thank you Will for pushing me to get out of my comfort zone in trying (and now liking!) this new approach!
