How To Build Alcohol Stoves - Fancy Feast & Rolled Bottle

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Using 1 of the thicker aluminum bottles, a cat food can and a little time I show how to build 2 of the more popular backpacking stoves - the fancy feast and the rolled bottle. To purchase the rolled stove see Tinny at MiniBull Design at www.minibulldesign.com/Produc... and see Zelph at Zelph StoveWorks for the fancy feast at www.woodgaz-stove.com/fancee-f... Here is a list of some of the tools and materials used to make these stoves.
Thanks for watching,

very cool! I would like to suggest that (This from a former U.S. Navy sailor) you use a "Whipping" on your wick. The Whipping is strong enough that you wouldn't need any glue. It's virtually the same type of wrapping your doing, but you fold a loop underneath the wrap, at the end of the wrap you tuck the tail into the loop and pull. (this could get a little tough because it will be very tight). (look for whipping videos you'll get it...)

Good builds, I found on the Rolled stove that putting 4 Dents or notches on the top of the stop stove evenly placed with a pair of Needle nose pliers, helps it to be more fuel efficient, and using carbon felt fiber on the cat stove also works better than insulation.

One of the best videos I've seen on how to make both types of stoves. I've made Fancy Feast stoves using a tomato paste can & carbon fiber felt. I put 4,... 1/8" long, slits in the bottom of the tomato paste can with a Dremel cut-off disc so the alcohol can get up into the felt. I noticed you did not do that in your stove. Am I correct or did I just miss it?

I've never made either. After watching your very nice video, I'm going to make both. SERIOUS QUESTION: Is the priming wrap absolutely necessary on the rolled stove?

  • @robertcwillifordii2630

    @robertcwillifordii2630

    4 жыл бұрын

A wrapped priming wick is not "necessary", however I highly recommend using external priming fluid on (most) every alcohol burner (whether you use it spread around the burner or absorbed into a wrapped wick is a personal preference, since both manners will accomplish the goal), to dramatically decrease the blooming time for the burner, since the alcohol is being heated from both the inside and outside of the gassifying chamber. Either method of reducing the bloom time maximizes your limited cooking fuel, when lacking an external fuel supply feeding line (with a fuel feeder, using external priming fluid is NOT an option, you just have to wait, but the burner will continue to burn as long as you keep feeding it fuel).... so there's a trade-off. Differently designed burners have different fuel efficiencies when it comes to actually heating and cooking, so know that there are many variables in using an alcohol burner, but two common elements of maximizing fuel efficiency are using a pot lid and windscreen for heat retention (because that's the name of the game: Heat Retention).

Just a few questions - What was your wrapping wick diameter (1/8th or 1/16th), number of holes you drilled in the rolled edge can, and results for the burn times? I've done a few rolled edge bottles and I pretty much have the same arbor press, mine bottles kept crunching, so I'm going to try the continuous twisting / lubricating of the die, hopefully that helps! Rob, Thank You for one of The Best tutorials I've seen to this date, kinda missed the loud and crappy 'muzak' and gratuitous finger pointing, but will learn to live without it, Ha, Ha. I made a form to press the cans together with a 1/4" X 5" dia. piece of steel with a 1/4" X 2" round head bolt through the center of the steel plate and then used my drill press in lieu of a regular press - but eventually will buy a press or set up one of my bottle jacks to do the job as I am building a few dozen alcohol heaters and lamps for the 'homeless' in my City so need to keep them as simple and quick to make so I can get them distributed - along with some tarps so they can have DIY tent to use them inside to stay warm and not be in the dark, and YES there will be a way to ventilate the tarps to provide fresh air. Anyway, Thank You for sharing your technique on how to "roll" the edge of a can.

If you’re making more than one of these you could drill a hole in a beer cap and put a bolt through, lock it in with a nut, Chuck it in your drill, and attach the bottle. Now grab a piece of sandpaper and pull the trigger and you can sand the whole bottle in a couple minutes

I watched the video a couple times and I don't believe you covered this one little bit of info. Did you stop the roll right before bottoming out? Or did you drill some feeder holes on the inside wall, down near the bottom?

Awesome video. Left us hanging on the final detail. Boil times. The fancy feast looks like it has more uniform flame. Which one boils faster? P.S. do you have a 2qzq backpack table? Want to lay hands on one before I pick up that luxury item. Thanks

Thanks Joe, you just have to build one of each and see :) (they are both similar in boil times at about 6ish minutes). I like the fancy feast better due to no need to prime and all alcohol goes to the pot. I do not have a 2QZQ table but I do know they are great as I have seen one and messed with it. I have the tree table from Klaussinator (klaussinator.com/?page_id=1272 ) and really like it as well.

I'm a bit confused. I've seen the fancy feast made with carbon felt as the wick and a tomato paste can. Do you place the fuel in the can and in the carbon felt wick?

+Brian L Carbon felt is outdated. There's a ceramic cloth that works much better. It has much better heat resistance, and never shrinks, as carbon felt eventually does.

Camera falls over - guess we know what he did with that bottle of Bud..... What was the wicking material on the Bud stove? What is the usable difference between the fancy feast flame and the jet flames of the Bud stove? I noticed the spacing between the bottle and the cat food can is very small. I guess you cannot use carbon felt in the gap?

Awesome! That fiberglass cloth is a @&$?! to work with. I got hair spray to spray on it before I even cut it. I lost so much trying to cut a piece the right size. The spray adhesive is an excellent addition. I think I'll use both. Spray a large section of cloth with hairspray, cut my small piece then use your method. I had ordered an arbor press from Harbor Freight (probably the same one) but decided I'm more fond of the Fancy Feast. Shug swears by it! Now, your next challenge? Perhaps a simmer ring for Fancy Feast like Zelph's!!

North Country Outdoor Guys Thanks Ben. I don't have problems with the fiberglass, I simply use sharp scissors and go slow - not sure why I am lucky with it. Now, once you start to work with it and fold and wrap it is a different story...the adhesive is the ticket. I really like the fancy feast but to be honest, I generally bring a different DIY stove each trip. I just like em all I guess. Challenge accepted!

Do you think this version of Fancy Feast stove works better than the old version using holes punched in the side?

Johnny Benge Yes, I believe it has a better flame that is less impacted by the wind (although you must use a wind screen with each) and due to the wicking material the stove lights even in cold weather. In fact the FF has been used at temps as low as -40F by Shug. I hope this helps.

Also, if you just want to make the fancy feast you can use the new style bud light bottles. They work equally as well.

I want to describe a stove that I made after several years of R&D, for you. It was based upon your own design. I needed power and longevity of burn time for the outdoors. I needed to make Coffee, breakfast and hot water after that on one burn. Yet remain lite and compact to carry easily in my cook set. My stove is well over 45 min of burn time, usually about 54min burn time. I used a large sized , used Sterno canister for the base. I brazed in a smaller (you can JB weld this) a taller can upside down with the original top removed and fuel vanes added for flow down inside. The inside can ( heated pressurized fuel reservoir) is basically sealed once the pot or pan is placed on top. I packed the inbetween space with fiberglass insulation to the top level of the Sterno base can. The final part was to drill a 1/8th fill hole in the top of the braised center can bottom (which is now the top) to add fuel. This acts as the huge fuel tank , and low pressure heat expansion chamber. Of course the fiberglass is the flame ring just like your "Feest" stove and the principal is the same. However, the fuel volume is massive and there is an inherent preheat and charge with this design that acts more like a natural gas burner in efficiency and burn time. I have other alcohol stoves just like you. However, this is my go to must have HOG burner that out cooks all others for time and efficiency.

Tge Fancy Feast is the best and most fuel efficient tove for the money. The rolled bottle is not worth the effort. E 8000 works better and holds longer. I would use a priming cup instead of wrapping wick. Carbon felt works best as a wick for Fancy Feast stove and a tomato paste can cut down for the insert works better cut to where an inch sticks up past the cat food can is the sweet spot
