How to Build a Squash Trellis
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
With Summer arriving it's the perfect time to get our garden all setup so that the plants will thrive all season long. One of the best structures you can build is a trellis for your squash. It will not only allow them to grow most effectively, but also allow you to maximize your garden space and squash yield. After many years of experimenting with different options, in today's video I share with you my FAVORITE squash trellis - you'll be shocked by how simple it is!

As a crocheter I have a TONA OF YARN! I’m so glad I watched this
Just discovered your videos... Love your mission regarding gardening and mental health!! I have been gardening for 70 years. My garden is where all my stresses fall away, as my attention is on the plants, their sprouting, growing, flowering, fruiting -- and the bees, butterflies, hummingbird moths, etc., which enjoy it as much as I do. When I step out my door into the garden, I am in a healthier, and mentally healthier, place! Very helpful video on the squash trellis construction! Best wishes to you!
Gardening IS my mental health.💚great idea!

YESSSS Melanie! Love love love to hear that!
This is awesome and perfectly timed! Bought a butternut squash from our farmers market. All of its seeds were growing inside. Naturally I had to plant them. Now it’s time to separate them. Going to find homes for a lot of them, I hope. But I didn’t want the plants spreading out in the yard. Weeds, rot, bugs I don’t need. Great info here. Thank you. I like listening to you talk. Nice voice, excellent cadence and sweet humor to boot. New subbie here.
Thank you! I'm going to try this. On a much smaller scale, though. (Am a widowed Grandmother-so will do what I can by myself). I appreciate you making & sharing this video.
Love to use trellis, walls fences even trees! So much room to go and grow up! Great ideas in your video.

Fabulous idea for balcony gardens
Great job, love your message and energy😊
Using trellises for squash is SUCH a better way to grow them! I got cattle panels to create arches between my raised beds (which were cheaper for me than building a wood structure) when I first built them. I have grown spaghetti squash, pie pumpkins, birdhouse gourds, luffa and melons on these with amazing results! :D Whatever kind of structure you decide to use, I HIGHLY recommend using a trellis as often as possible! :) Great build video.

What spacing do you use for your squash on the arch trellis? I just bought my cattle panels yesterday 😊
@gwendyrose8905
2 ай бұрын
@@midwesternhooftrimmer6735 It kind of depends on what I'm growing. However, I usually use the "square foot gardening" method in my beds. For most, I assign a 2ftx1ft space per plant on the edge of the bed. This puts the vines approximately 18in to 24in apart from each other. This tends to be a good spacing so they don't compete with each other much on the panel. However, with the luffas and bird house gourds, I could do a 1ft square just fine. I had to watch so that the vines didn't cross each other. I also had to make sure that the young fruit didn't get stuck in the holes of the cattle panel. Good luck this season! 😀--Gwendy from Mid-MO

I have a small patch of dirt where i planted about 6 spaghetti squash seeds, and they all started to grow LOL. The leaves are so big and I was starting to worry about not having enough space for the squash. Your video is very helpful and looks doable. I plan to install trellises right away. Thanks for this!
Amazing - such a simple idea that I never thought of. Really hope we have a summer in Ireland this year lol.

Wow this seems so easy. I’m heading to Home Depot today. Thanks
This is exactly what I need!! Love your videos, and appreciate you answering questions;) Thks so much, my squash is already going crazy! I planted it in a galvanized bucket, think I should transfer to ground? Read that they have deep roots - but my soil is iffy...
Great video! Can you elaborate a bit on how long these last for you, are you using pressure treated wood, do you have issues with warping? Thanks.
I think I can do this using the weeping willow branches pruned from a large tree, braided, and connected together. I am severely limited, so the potting bag idea should work. It will be another experiment, this time with pickling cucumbers. I'll find out fairly soon.

Enjoying your channel. One question; does the yarn rot, or do you use a synthetic type?
I have extra 4X8 re-mesh panels lying around.......I think I can put those to good use!
This is the system I used to use, I did however add slings for the heavy veggies or fruit, using anything from old pantyhose, cheese cloth, netting, etc.

Hi! Loved this video. I have a small 4x4 raised garden bed. Can the trellis be straight up or does it need to lean? I guess this would work for Cucumber 🥒 too. Thanks!
Great video! I have a space that's full sun, 5ft wide x 4ft deep. Is that enough space? If so, how far off the wall should the trellis be propped? Could anything else grow with it or will the squash take up all the space? Thank so much!!
Great video and your cucumber one as well. I was getting ready to make some different ones but love your ideas and will save me space. Is it ok to plant cucumbers and squash close together?

Yup my parents have grown butternut squash on theirs! The wood structure will be more than strong enough and if you were concerned you could go with a thicker twine or even a metal string with clasps. Keep in mind that leaving the fruit on the plant for too long prevents the plant from producing new/more fruit, so harvesting earlier can be very advantageous!
I’ve been waiting for this. Im going to be growing a couple butternut squash plants on mine, but I’m only going to be able to make it about 6’ tall. Do you think that will still work okay? Better than nothing? Thank you!

Oh yeah 6' will be great! And make it as wide as you can as that will give them room to sprawl throughout!
I have early straight-neck squash from what I understad these grow as a bush? or no? Will this work for them? Getting ready to harrden them off so will be planting outside soon! Thanks!
Great walk through Jordan. Will this work for cucumbers? I’m going to grow mine in bags up against my most sunny fence.

I have access to a lot of bamboo and have been trying to figure out how to use it to make a trellis for my squash. Any suggestions on how to best secure bamboo pieces together instead of wood to make a similar structure?
Hey! I have a creeper zucchini variety and not the climbing one. Can you please suggest how to trellis the creeper varieties of Squash/ Zucchini?
I planted seeds 2 months ago in FL and have about 1ft. tall plants with only male flowers. When do the female flowers start coming? I saw your trellis segment and am going to build that around my pots it is a driveway garden raised. how deep do the squash need and cucumbers too, and can I use pine straw to keep moisture in so they don't dry out during the day due to the intense heat and sun?
Hey Jordan, I biffed it and need some advice. I threw four winter squash seeds in the ground within a 1 foot space with the intentions of moving the seedlings over once an empty spot became available. Well that didn’t happen and now I have four squash plants with a number of leaves on each all squished together. Is it too late? Is there a way to transplant them without damaging them? Thanks for any advice.!
Would you recommend using regular pine 2x4? I know untreated pine will rot after a few years but does that really matter for trellis?
What if you don't have anything to lean the trellis on to?
8' ft cattle panel works for me.

Hiya, just wondering, is it OK to try get the plant onto a trellis once it has already started growing the squashes?
Can the squash vine support the fruit just hanging there? Do you have to provide support under the weight as it gets bigger? I mean do the squash fall off?
Can we make 'A' structural trellis for squashs, please ? Thank you
Would this trellis work for larger fruits like pumpkins and watermelons?
How far apart can you plant the seedlings when using a trellis like this?
Can I do this with buttercup squash or are they too heavy to hang?
How can I make one of these trellis for my allotment as I have no fence for it to attach too please?
If you use cotton or wool yarn it can go in the compost bin.
Hi ho far apart do you plant your butternut pumpkins😊

Great question! So what's of even more importance is making sure they have enough space to travel. So you could plant them at spacing of 2per sq ft - provided they have a large space (i.e. 20sq ft to sprawl into!

Hi, I really like your trellis but I have a space that has a section of white lattice that has a diagonal pattern to it & I'm wondering if I could grow my zucchini on it vertically and secure the stems where needed. What do you think? Thanks a bunch :)
@woodspirit98

Diagonals are way too confusing to squash.
Thanks for this great video! I have a follow up question. If you use the SFG method, a squash takes 4 squares. Is this amount of space still required if you trellis the plants? Same questions for cucumbers and toms (re your other amazing videos ;) ). TIA!
@MindandSoil
2 жыл бұрын
Oh this is a super good question!! So that spacing is more applicable when not trellising. Or in other words, when you trellis, you can plant them closer together! So for squash and cukes I probably go one every 1.5ft, and then for tomatoes if you are trellising *and* pruning then you could go 1x per sq ft! Lmk if that helps or if there are any follow up questions! Is your patio officially about to be a jungle?!

Ah super cool Heide! Mine is two lines and then on the inside of my forearm it turns to text which reads: Feel the Fear. Choose Possibility. The reason behind this is because I find that we end up not changing things in our lives or taking the big leaps of face because of a fear of the unknown. So we choose the known - even though it doesn't light our soul on fire. So, this is my reminder to feel into those thoughts/feelings about what I'm afraid of because they're real, but then to also feel into the possibility of what could happen if things went better than hoped planned by leaning into that unknown - as that usually ends up being the case! :D

The one disadvantage to trellising squash is that you can't save squash that's been hit by squash vine borers by mounding soil over the vine further up from the damage so that it forms new roots. On the other hand, it's much easier to spot and deal with the borers if the vines are off the ground.

do you have any trouble with squirrels using this approach? I like the idea of leaning the trellis against the fence but my neighborhood is overrun with squirrels, and they love to run along the top of my fence. I wouldn't want to encourage them to come and raid my garden by putting in a ramp
Wouldn't the sqaushes fall if they will become too heavy? Thanks:)
@MindandSoil
2 жыл бұрын
Great question! If you watch closely you'll see at a few points there were 4-5 hanging in the air and they were perfectly fine! The Vine is quite strong and the weight is passed along both the yarn and wood. And by the time they get to that size I like to harvest so that the plant redirects its energy to other new plants :)
