Hello WV Tim! Built this cache about a month ago. I was having problems with the battery dying (in 3-4 days) in the stick. I believe it was due to heavy rain, damp plywood despite two coats of paint. I fixed it by using car spark plugs through the plywood. Working for 2+ weeks so far, I think I'm in the clear.

I just finished building my geocache similar to that on this video. I'm so excited to activate it and see the reaction of fellow geocachers! This will be the first one like this cache in my area.

Great idea! And yes, this definitely raises the geocaching bar. Thanks for the caches and videos.

@@SuperAnya2000 Looks like it was destroyed. The description says "Since, in my opinion, this location is no longer suitable for placing a good cache either, I will archive it. Subsequent logs are deleted without comment. Thanks for the nice entries and the many favorite points. For a year the premium cache was good, less than six weeks as a standard it was destroyed twice. Everyone can make their own thoughts about it." (translated)

Just thought I would say, its almost finished, just needs the final paint job, thank you so much for this Idea. I cant wait to see the results.

That is exactly what I hope will happen. Hopefully these videos get cacher builders thinking outside the box, so to speak.

Update : anyone building this cache, if you have trouble with the energy stick going off accidentally, I suggest insulating the nail or screw connected to the stick. YOu can do that by drilling a little larger hole and wrapping it in electrical tape.

There are several ways to insulate the screws, another way of doing it is put one screw or bolt in a plastic sleeve ( like a small plumbing tube)

I built this cache, and it keeps draining the stick. I think it's because the wood gets a little wet and it's enough complete that circuit. I ended up insulating the bolts with vinyl shoulder bushings - but it happened again. Need to think a bit more about how to make this work reliably. It does rain a lot out here in WA state!

I love this. I got to do my first gadet cache at woodstock. It was very similar to this one. And I have been wanting to do one down here in my area. But I couldn't figure out how they did it. Thanks for the video!

Going to build this one for my neck of the woods! I wanted to ask Tim, most of your caches have a chain and padlock on them. How best to you attach that piece? Have you found it an effective deterrent to theft? I suspect it's meant to LOOK more difficult than it is.

How well does this cache work... after a period of time... such as if the nails and screws get rusty... will it still work like its supposed to?

This cache was out for years and years. I like to replace my caches from time to time with new caches. Near this location is a new WVTim gadget cache using a microprocessor. It's hard sometimes to archive a cache with hundreds of favorite votes but most times its what is best for the game.

i checked on it again and it turns out that some water got in the bird house and the lights are not coming on :(

Hi Tim, just wondering how this cache is holding up to the elements? I'm trying to use the same set up to illuminate coordinates for a final stage of a multi but I'm having a lot of trouble with the stick going off on its own. I'm going to have to break it down and try to insulate it better. I found that the paint I used on the box is very conductive especially when wet.

mvalentine67051 I had to do the same thing. What I did, was insulate one of my connections in a plastic sleeve. I found a bolt that perfectly fit in a plastic sleeve . Seems to be working pretty good. Depending on usage, I can normally get several months out of one stick.

I found the Energy Stick at www.stevespangler.com a school science website. They also sell baby soda bottles, perfect for small caches that hold just a log and a pen!
