    I’ve built several Longrifles myself over the years and can attest you are doing a wonderful job showing people how it’s done correctly. You have a great teaching voice too. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching. I also appreciate your nice plug for Mike Miller who is indeed a master gun builder and just a great guy too.

    How did you get interested in this? I ask because my son is in the Marines and when gets out he wants to start a gun shop. I would be extremely interested in doing what you do as a specialty. Any help would be awesome

    That’s exactly what I did when I got out of the Marines. Start buying good quality tools now as you can afford them. Swiss made chisels are very good. I can’t stress enough how important reading and research is in building. You have to know the history and architectures before building one. Don’t ever get in a hurry. It will cost you. I hope that helps some. History and the love of shooting and hunting is how I got into it. And it’s an awesome way of distracting your mind from every day life.

    I'm extremely impressed that someone so young has this much skill, knowledge, and expertise about early gun making! It's like watching someone from the 18th Century. I'd love to know where he learned the trade.

    Those hollow screwdrivers are really neat! I have one too. I can recommend sewing a small tool roll for the insert that fits in the handle, both for easier access and to keep stuff from rattling around too much. Mine came with a tiny gouge and a chisel, so it's mostly for those

    Your use of the candle soot is the same technique used by masons to build the pyramids. They would use chalk to create tight joints between their blocks.

    I am looking at building a flintlock from scratch and I was wondering if you need to size the lock to the barrel. Like for a 32 cal barrel you need a lock that uses a 1/2” flint. Or does it really matter.

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713

    @goldenmeanflintlocks9713

    3 жыл бұрын

    Doesn’t necessarily matter. If you get a small lock you’ll probably need a 5/8” or a 3/4” flint. For a bigger lock you can use a 7/8” or 1” flint. But no, you don’t have to size it the barrel itself. If you let the cock down and the flint is going to hit the barrel you either need to scoot the flint over or go to a smaller flint.

    You don't use Lamp Black when inletting? I would think it a better option than rust, and probably more accurate.

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713

    @goldenmeanflintlocks9713

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was only using a rusty saw to check for straightness of the flat before inletting the lock. I do use lamp black or a beeswax candle for the lock when it almost fits. Then I can see where the final parts are hitting.
