    Great series. Learned a lot, sorry to be obsessive though. I missed the part were he, and forgive my layman's terminology, made the hole in the barrel adjacent to the pan. Could someone link me to the part he did that? Or if he didn't show that, if somebody has a video similar to it please send it to me I've been looking for something like that.

    I explain where to place it in video 2 or 3 I believe. But I don’t think it was shown how I drilled and tapped it. I used a 5/16” bit and tapped it for the “White lightening” touchole liner. You can purchase them at muzzleloader builders supply or Track of the wolf. I’ll do a video sometime and show more in detail how to do that.

    Is there a layman explanation for what a swamped barrel is? I read it's sort of like 2 cones joined at both the smaller sides, like the breach starts wide then it tappers down then it flares again. But does that happen inside the barrel only? which is why I can't see it on the surface of the octagon shaped barrel? or is it so subtle that I didn't notice it?

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713
    @goldenmeanflintlocks97137 күн бұрын

    It’s only on the outside. There are what are called Tapered, straight and Tapered and flared (swamped) barrels. If you can’t see transitions looking down the outside of the barrel, it’s probably a straight barrel. They tend to be more end heavy. Tapered and flared (swamped) takes the nose weight out.

    Yes. I didn’t have one for the video. Planes work great! I still prefer to use chisels for the ramrod channel but for the barrel channel I start with chisels and then go to a plane.

    Hey bro can you suggest some books I should buy for building a flintlock? I know about the gunsmith of Greenville county and the art of recreating the longrifle

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713
    @goldenmeanflintlocks97137 күн бұрын

    Books on building g are difficult to find. But books like “Rifles of colonial America” and others are great for pictures so you can study them to see how their lines are. Mike Miller has a series out on DVD where he goes through step by step. You can order his dvd through Pioneer video.

    I’ve had a terrible time locating books that go step by step on the building. Gunsmith of Grenville county is good. Other than that, I just bought books and studied their lines in the images and slowly I learned lol. Sorry I’m not more help with that.

    This really should be called how to make a rifle stock and assemble a flintlock considering the hardest part (the rifled barrel) is pre-made.

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713
    @goldenmeanflintlocks97135 ай бұрын

    The barrel actually isn’t the hardest part. Forging the lock and the springs and getting everything to function properly is the hard and most time consuming part. Making a barrel takes 1 day to forge it, 3-4 days to ream it, 1 day to file it, 1 day to make the plug, and 4 hours to rifle it. Less than a dozen people still know how to do all that. And if you’re in a profession to make a living, not too many people can afford that. A 100% completely hand made rife including each screw costs about $35,000. I plan on doing a video one of these days on forging and filing each part. But that will be in the future sometime.

  • @nelsonhartleygretton5627
    @nelsonhartleygretton56275 ай бұрын

    @@goldenmeanflintlocks9713 the lock and springs and the lock are absolutely fiddley, but the barrel bored and reamed and rifled and kept straight from a flat bar of steel is objectively the hardest part and required more specialised precision equipment. As a viewer the fact it’s not included is pretty lame In my opinion considering in the states you can go buy all of that stuff CNC made and ready to go. probably not a massive deal to most people but I couldn’t even watch the video after you pulled out that premade barrel. I hope you do a full Musket from scratch as the video looked high quality along with the editing, so it’d would get a watch from me

  • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713

    There’s a video you can buy on “pioneer videos” on the NMLRA website. Also, the colonial Williamsburg gunsmith video is a good source too. If you’re jus looking to buy one that’s been machine made, Rice, Colerain and Ed Rayle make great barrels and other barrel makers as well. Hope this helps you.
