How to Build a Carnivorous Plant Bog

Ойын-сауық

Kate and Alison will show you how to build a non-draining carnivorous plant bog with American pitcher plants (Sarracenia). This technique can be used for all the temperate species like Venus flytraps, Pinguicula and Drosera. For more information or to order, checkout www.californiacarnivores.com! (Also, Peter stops by at the end to check out our bog)

    Hi, I'm from Germany! I am so excited about your idea with the bigger stones. I have a PVP pipe in my bog, but I will change it to your idea with the stones. In my bogs and my bog garden I have a lot of plastic pots upside down on the ground of the bogs. It saves peat and you get a water reservoir. The capilarity holds the peat wet. Nice video and an georgeous flytrap and very nice Nepenthes.

    This is awesome. I'm getting some peat immediately. I've killed 2 or 3 fly traps over the years, I prefer tropical plants, mostly ones that vine or creep. Tradescantia varieties, pothos and aloe are my favorites. But I bought another venus fly trap last year sometime and managed to keep it alive in perlite and spaghnum moss bog but those dry out so fast. I was sure my husband had killed it by forgetting to water it when I was gone, but i trimmed it, and put it in the fridge for winter. Darn thing is still alive lol, since it's out of the fridge now have to keep it alive again lol. Peat looks alot better than spaghnum. And that rock channel is brilliant!

    You can definitely repot Sarracenia at any point during the year safely. The main reason we suggest you do it in winter is that the plants are not actively growing during that time. When you repot now, you’ll see some pitchers die back and growth will slow as the plant adjusts to being repotted. That’s all totally okay! The plant will still appreciate being repotted.

My question is around creating a multi species bog and trying to make it look like it would be found in nature. Let's say I have pitcher plants, sundews and flytraps. Should I group all of the same plants together or spread them out so the layout is random? I guess they'll start to mix and mingle eventually so maybe it doesn't matter how they're planted? Maybe I should do species specific setups. :-)

  • @California_Carnivores

    @California_Carnivores

    I’m so glad you enjoyed this video! I would recommend lining the barrels with plastic pond liner, peat moss is acidic and it will eat away at the wood otherwise. We do about four parts peat moss to one part perlite in our mix. You can mix the genus’s together but they can crowd each other out so it may be nice to do a mixed planter and then a few genus specific ones

I'm struggling with learning pot sizing (height, width) and have consequently killed a couple of plants when I put them in too-big containers. Also, for smal plants this size, would you recommend a draining bog garden or a non-draining bog garden?

  • @California_Carnivores

    @California_Carnivores

    3 жыл бұрын

    You can over winter them with no protection in zones 8-12 with some caveats. If the temperatures drop below 20 for sustained periods, you’ll want to mulch them in heavily on the top and sides. And if temperatures do not drop into the 50’s you’ll need to do a fridge dormancy. In zones lower than 8, you can leave them outside but mulch like crazy!

    I'm not a pro, but am looking to avoidpeat for environmental reasons. Another video had a thread that talked about coco coir from a brand called Canna that is rinsed already! Other people said they just soak the coir overnight and rinse it well the next day. Either way, what I learned was to use a TDS meter and it should be less than 50-80 ppm. Like I said, I'm not a pro, but this is what I've gathered from people who have experience with coir.
