Creating A Water Tank Pond with Carnivorous Rock Gardens / Homegrown Garden
I’ve been wanting to start this new pond project for some time and I’m so excited to finally build and share it with you from start to finish! There’s a lot going on here, but see the chapters below if you need to. In this video you’ll see how I convert and seal an old galvanised water tank into a pond feature complete with pond plants, carnivorous plants and bubbles! You’ll also see how I create my ‘rock gardens’ inspired by those of Sarracenia Northwest. Remember I have no electricity on the allotment so the pond doesn’t have any fancy filtration or pumps, just a basic solar aerator and plenty of plants to keep the water healthy. Enjoy! Let me know what you think.

Love this! I have a passion for plants and ponds. Besides several ponds and a bathtub pond outdoors, I have a pitcher plant indoors and I think I will try planting it in lava rock as you have done to give it more hydration. Currently I have it sitting in a plate of pebbles with water but this is a wonderfl idea! Thank you for sharing.
I LOVE those lava rock bowls! So natural looking. Well done. An idea i need to borrow
If I were doing this, I would have said "Nah, the tank is too small", but, hey, it works. Great job !
I have been watching a lot of pond videos .. finally one that really inspires me, I love it❣️
Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada. I am originally from the Island of Newfoundland on Canada's east coast, where the pitcher plant is the Provincial Flower...I remember seeing these alot in boggy areas. a nice reminder of home. Your pond is well done, very Pretty. Thanks for your videos, they are an inspiration for this Plant Junkie... Cheers from across the pond.
Blimey it’s you!! WOW I used to watch your channel regularly years ago but then for some reason YT stopped showing me when you upload and I haven’t seen one in what seems an eternity. Anyhoo this has just showed up whilst I was watching something totally unrelated (yea good job KZread) so here I am again after all this time. Great video, love the pond. PS if you want some power down there you should have a look into the EcoFlow or Bluetti LiFePO4 battery systems. You could stick a 200w solar panel on your shed roof and then just hook up to the solar battery and you would have pretty much unlimited 240v and 12v power for anything you need such as bubblers, pumps, lights, even boiling an electric kettle for a brew.
I don’t remember you having mentioned your engagement or ever seeing your beautiful ring! Congratulations 🥂
I stopped watching KZread over the last many weeks.... since early spring. So tired of all age politics and lies and and covid and the depressing narrative. It was leaving me very upset. Anyway, a couple or three weeks ago, I needed something positive to lift my spirits. I cancelled all the news channels ... bar one or two neutral facts only ones, and a couple of bloggers, but all the gardeners I loved over the years remain. I am so very pleased I made the choices I did.. I am so happy to have watched your post this morning! It will be a beautiful fall weekend here on the Canadian prairies and I will be in my garden putting it to bed! I happen to have a number of galvanized steel planter liners from a trading site, sitting taking up space in my garage! I think I will adopt your vision and place them out in the garden and next spring they will be ready to bring new life to neglected corners. They will freeze solid over the winter! but I can overwinter some plants in an in ground pond, or the garage! Thank you for the inspiration and just for being good for my spirits.
For a non gardener . I thoroughly enjoy this site .

Polyurethane pond seal.... Hmmm. This might solve a problem I have. Thanks for sharing the product!
I definitely think there should be a frog naming competition. I would like to nominate Jeremiah for the frog.

Lovely concept thank you for sharing I am across the pond in the USA . I am setting up my first patio pond. I have three bog garden housing all carnivorous plants each spring the blooms are amazing. 😚⛲🌿🌿🌿
What an absolutely cracking job you've made of that....the airpump makes the pond come alive , I could stare at it for hours on a recliner 👌
Having fun is hard. Great job
Great work and very relaxing
I have just taken the surface temperature of my tank pond which was 26C - 15.38 on 14/08/22. There is no way I can shade the pond and I have had great problems with blanket weed this year and as the pond sits in full sun for most of the day, it's not surprising and possibly I should think of a different regime. It has been a great success for the last four years and the pond plants grow really well. I shall probably follow your new pond ideas so I will follow your progress with interest. Thank you for yet another charming and informative video.
Love your new pond. Incorporating carnivorous plants is a new idea for me,I never would have thought to use them the way you have!A good idea.
Perfectly done! Very impressed with the pump and solar panel kit, well done Katrina! 👌A message for your fiancé: You're a lucky man mate 😉
Hiya Katrina Thankyou love the new addition to your garden. Enjoy! Blessings luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦
Awesome pond, can't wait to see how it progresses over the years. Not sure if it's just me but I swear you look even happier than usual in this video, what a pretty smile!

Aww, thank you. I was just super excited to get my pond made. Once I get set on an idea I’m so impatient and impulsive that I just have to get it done 😆

Thank you 🥰
Wow encore une belle vidéo bravo 😉 A bientôt 👍
That’s really cool, I might try something like that next year. Looking forward to seeing what type of fish you put in. As a kid, I was always fascinated by looking at pond life through a microscope, as an old guy now, I always think about taking up that hobby again. This would be a great source for microscopic critters.
What a great job, I was surprised to see all the plants you were putting in a fairly small tank, but in the end it all looked very pleasely balanced. We have a ground level pond for years now. We first had some plants and fish, the raccoons took the fish rather quickly. Fast forward, we now only have a water pump and water fountain for circulation. I love your plants and look forward to seeing your efforts evolve. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
congrats on your engagement you two
Hey , just come across your channel now , laid up with injured ankle ,just as soon as I bout my own first plastic greenhouse .....typical lol. Looking forward to seen your videos and watching . I'm in South east Ireland so only across the pond.
So lovely 🥰
Just loved listening to you... looks great and I will make the lavaplants.. thx
Congradulation for you he finnaly proposed.

I love this! It looks great. I created a "patio pond" this summer and it has been such a joy - and having fish out there is so fun!

Stupendous!
Such an enchanting new feature for your garden. Love it.

Did the same in a plastic tub on my patio. Was amazed yesterday to find a frog in it. Thanks for the rock idea. Going to give it a go, but will have to change out the tap water, if it ever rains again.
Beautiful ! Love the way You put it all together. Thank You for sharing and have a fantastic day
Fascinating.. I need to do this. Very inspirational
What a lovely job, so much thought and attention to detail! Gorgeous! 🌀🌳
Looks fantastically relaxing. Great project.
i love this.
Great video!
Great job the pond looks great keep us updated on how it's going
great job
i'm going to use this for botanical reference! although my pond would be home to several mollies. and i'd be using a solar submersible pump, not an aerator, for water surface agitation. much gratitude from the Philippines
love it
Loved watching you make your new pond it’s fantastic can’t wait to see wat kind of fish you get 👍
Hello! Very fascinating!! It will be fun to watch it naturalize as everything grows and settles in, and then after you add fish, too! Thanks for sharing this project!! Happy gardening and have a wonderful day!
I love how thoughtful you are about chemicals and wildlife. I'm the same way
Absolutely love this! Thank you for the idea of using a solar oxygenator. My metal wash tub pond needs this addition next year.😊
It’s a lovely ponds, love the lava rock idea, really thought through. I hope it gives you lots of pleasure. 😊

I think it looks wonderful! I like the carnivorous plants in the rocks. Can't wait to see it with fish.
I just love this video and what you have done with that water tank! Here in South Africa, i have to wait until September to be able to get some carnivorous plants from the nursery. I have a beautiful `spongy` rock i picked up on the beach to use for the pitchers i plan to buy. Thank you for that wonderful tip. My small wildlife pond will be so beautiful this year. I just love all your video`s Katrina, greetings from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Greetings from the Olympic Peninsula in NW Washington! Thank you for sharing the creation of your new water feature! Loved it! 💛🌻💛🌻💛
I loved this pond! It inspires me to do something similar. I’ll have to start looking for a suitable vessel.
I LOVE this 😍 Looking forward to seeing you adding some fish 🐠🙏
I love it! It will be so relaxing to sit near! 🪷🪷🪷

Thanks for sharing your talents! Should be able to work well here in Missouri, USA!
Years ago I ve had a summer pond for my turtle on my roof garden. It was filled with gravel and I ve had strong grasses and Iris in baskets / pots. It became too hot , couldnt controle the algues. Although I ve cleaned and refreshed the water. ( With a turtle its necessary) . I just have an insect and bird bath instead nowadays. But I really like your water project, especially the plants in the lava . You have more shadow ... I hope dragon flies will settle down there.
Really well done, and very helpful.

It looks so wonderful katrina!! Nice job!!! Its so you...ox from NH
Nice! I've always liked sun dews though I don't know why. I think it's the way the light hits them. Good project.
It's great
I love your pond, good job. I think I'd like to try one too.
Wonderful project Katrina and a brilliant piece of inspiration for anyone building a smaller type of water feature. The textbooks would have us believe a pond shouldn't be any smaller than 2x3 metres . Portable too when drained down enough to lift and keep the fish alive.
Your pond looks gorgeous 👍 Inspired by your wildlife pond I've build one pond as well. Once you have one, you get addicted to it 😂 Now I have two ponds and another plant is sitting in a rain barrel and waiting for the third pond. This Sagittaria sagitttifolia is so beautiful 🤗 I think it would fit very nicely in there 😉
