    Would be cool to have your nice bottles and maybe a decanter on top of the barrel and the then glassware/ additional bottles / other bar sh*t inside. A hinged door or double door would also be tight.

    Best video on how to do this so far. Thank you. It seems like the people that make these for a living keep all their secrets to themselves. Question, if you wanted to make a door from the leftover staves, what changes in your measurements would to make to accommodate a hinge of some type - like maybe a piano hinge?

  • @craftedworkshop

    @craftedworkshop

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Paul Amador thanks! The door would be tricky for sure. A piano hinge wouldn't work since it would have to curve along the side of the barrel, and that would keep the hinge from operating correctly. I think a more standard surface mount fence-style hinge would work best.

    That’s exactly what I had used for my barrel liquor cabinet. Fence hinges. You just need to bend them before installing on the barrel

    DO you think the bottom of the barrel would support the weight of the barrel if you put casters on to make it easier to move around? Obviously it wouldn't be sitting on the rim edge anymore.

  • @craftedworkshop

    How did you go about cleaning the barrel? I am going to be sanding the inside, then torching it to try and kill as much bacteria, reconstructing the barrel, and soaking in water and baking soda to hopefully remove any odor. I’m curious to know what you did though.

    Could you make the shelf a little bigger in diameter then use the staves that you cut out as supports so there are no metal brackets showing?

  • @craftedworkshop

    @craftedworkshop

    6 жыл бұрын

    The limiting factor for the shelf size is the door opening. It has to fit through the door, if that makes sense. That’s why we did what we did. Honestly, once you’ve got it loaded with bottles, the brackets are barely noticeable. You could paint them black to make them disappear even more.

    After you cut open the door and before you secure the shelf, spray vinegar all over the inside. Put a wide bowl of baking soda on the shelf and seal up the barrel opening for a couple days (you could use cling wrap). When you open it, the smell should be gone. If not, add several drops of essential oils (mint, peppermint, lemon, orange, or whatever you like) to the vinegar spray bottle, and spray the inside again, but don't use any baking soda.

    Paddy Paterson my husband finished that one and it wasn’t to bad in the end (but did still smell) he’s bought another barrel and painted the inside with black, it looks amazing and stopped the smell. He bought loads of stuff to try and fix the smell on the old one but nothing worked. There isn’t a smell with this new barrel so maybe the black paint worked! Did you figure out how to stop the smell?

    The whiskey aroma is the best part! The inside of the barrel is charred with fire before the whiskey goes in. They don't burn the alcohol.

    Perhaps this is a dumb question, but how did you get the carriage bolts to be flush with the band? The square part of the bolt near the head won't fit in the round hole.

    I ended up using a 7/16 size drill which allows a hole diameter large enough to allow the square detail to nest into. The carriage bolt head is flush against the band and I used a 5/16 washer and nut to secure the fastener on the inside.

    I never got a reply before I finished my project so I ended up grinding the square part round... It was time consuming and difficult so I recommend using Gil's solution.
