How to Build a 4x8 Mobile Workbench | FREE BUILD PLANS | DIY Workbench
If you’re looking to build a 4x8 mobile workbench, this is the video for you!
Build plans are available for free at www.bluenorthwoodworking.com
To determine the length of your legs, first determine the height of your bench. For example, my bench is 37” tall. This left me with 31” legs. My caster wheels are 5 ¼” tall and the plywood top of the bench is ¾” high. So, 37 - 5 ¼ - ¾ = 31.
TOOLS USED:
Right angle clamps

Let me know if you have any questions or comments. I will do my best to get back to you.
Thanks!
James

    I built mine and it turned out great! Instead of prebuilding the bottom shelf. I attached the sides to the legs, added the cross member and slid it's top on. May have slowed me down, but it worked. Following your process definitely made it easier.

    I made this workbench (or very similar) about 5 years ago. I have since gotten more serious with woodworking and realized I should've made the top of this a torsion box so that the entire surface of the bench can be a flat reference.

    Thank you! This is a great video! I'm hoping to put a heavy flat file on the bottom shelf - do you think as long as I get heavy-duty casters, it could support about 150 lbs?

  • @bluenorthwoodworking

    @bluenorthwoodworking

    I have had some pretty heavy wood on my bottom shelf and it’s been fine. The cross bracing should make it plenty strong enough, in my opinion.

    When I eventually make this, it will be used for cutting fabric and leather for bag-making and quilting. I’ll use melamine as the top so my mats and fabrics don’t get snagged. I’ve not really made anything since woodworking class 47yrs ago. I’m not afraid though I am wondering how I’d get it out of the house when I move in 2-4yrs. I’m considering using bolts instead of screws with braces at the corners so it is easier to break down. Thanks for the video!

    Great video man! I was wondering how its holding up? I've made plans to build something similar but a lot of guys are saying I should add supports in the middle as well to prevent sagging long ways in the future. Whats your opinion, do you think that would be necessary or nah? RIP to your father

  • @bluenorthwoodworking

    @bluenorthwoodworking

    Never a bad idea to have extra support. Mine has held up with no issues at this point and I typically have a couple hundred pounds of wood on the bottom shelf at all times. And thank you 💙

    It’s really cool you would n your dad,mine has been in heaven for 40 years more and to this day there are little things that make me think of him. I to am making one to flatten slabs. I have a real nice sled set up don’t want to mention who’s because i do not know if it would be advertising for them, anyway i would like to make it so the sled could be removed early so i can use it for an every day work table as well. I really like these plans and plan to use them to make my table, maybe i will send pic when done.

    Hi Howard, I would consider routing in some dovetail grooves and using microjig clamps to keep your sled in place, while also being able to remove it anytime you want. Good luck with your table :)

    Question about the caster wheels. What wheels do you suggest (Amazon ? ) and is there any issue fastening them to the 4x4 end grain ?

  • @bluenorthwoodworking

    @bluenorthwoodworking

    4 ай бұрын

    Hi Tom, I just went with a highly rated wheel off of Amazon. Make sure you take in account the full height of the wheel prior to cutting your legs. My 4” casters were 5 1/4” tall if I recall. I didn’t like screwing into the end grain, but it worked fine. I used washers to help.
