Enjoyed your video! Quick question: It looks like you soften first, then filter. What are your thoughts about doing it in that order? Many people filter first, then soften. Maybe a case of "six of one, half a dozen of the other?" By the way, I have noticed the same thing you demonstrated in your video, that when checking softened water with a TDS meter, the reading doesn't necessarily go down and in fact may go up. I called tech support for my TDS meter, they said this is a normal condition, that the resin beads exchange sodium ions for calcium & magnesium ions and the overall TDS content is basically unchanged. The way to measure the output of the water softener is with the test strip.

Good question, Chris, and here’s my rationale. The 3-stage is the absolute LAST FILTER in the chain to remove contaminants. Therefore, if there is ANY particle, residue, or contingent in the soft water tank, I want to filter that out. Now that the 3-stage is filtering our water so we’ll, we can be confident that our ice and drinking water is as pure as most bottled water. Some will argue that a .5 micron will even be MORE pure than unregulated bottled water. If the soft water tank was last in line, and got nothing but purified water, a lot of this is moot. Hope that helps.

I have since researched, and come to the conclusion that it’s better on the Soft Water filter if you filter the water BEFORE the SW tank. This makes the media last longer not only between recharge but also increases its life expectancy.

@@RVSquaredSteve Ok, so now you filter before going through the softener, right?

Yes Dan, that is correct. This helps preserve the life of the Softener media, as well as extended the time between recharge.

Great system, you're using a .5 micron, 1 micron, and a poly block cartridge filter. You mention a 5 micron filter. Based on your experience, is it worth adding a 4th cartridge for the 5 micron filter?

It’s the best you can use, Dan! There’s no sense in adding a 4th stage, really. 3-stages, with a .5 final, laid out the way I explain will take care of business! Different configurations can be played with in different water systems, eg 10-5-.5, or 10-1-.5, etc. It really only changes how much work the .5 has to take care of, and have to be changed sooner. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

Ok, I just heard you say this is not a system for deionized water for rinsing the RV. So, please explain, and two, what do you use for rinsing the Newell?

Dan, this is a 3-stage water filter and softener system; it filters and softens. The De-ionizer is a completely different system used for washing our Newell. You can see my other videos with the DI system.

Wait... city water particulate was 196. Filtered was 214. Isn't that the opposite of what you want to see?

This is a huge point of confusion for many; let me explain. The meter I'm using reads TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS (TDS) and will pick up ALL minerals...including trace salts which CAN be present shortly after a softener recharge which uses salt. The TDS is NOT a measure of water hardness, which is performed with ChemStrips and ONLY measures Calcium and Magnesium. This demonstration was to illustrate the fact the two readings are entirely different and, as stated, the filter and softener system will provide micro filtration and softening, but NOT a total removal of solids. That is a job solely for a DeIonized Water Filter. I have a video about the DI filter here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKxqpMONkdWanbg.htmlsi=JryoNjstQRSgm_wB Incidentally, since posting this video, I have changed the order of the filter system to have the softener tank AFTER the 3-stage. I do this to send the purest water into the softener resin; thus making it work less and prolong its life. Hope this clarifies things for you. Holy cow.....maybe figure out a way to boil the water before it enters as well! A little on the anal retentive side about the water as well as the "quick connects". It reminds me of a drinking game where everyone has to take a shot when a certain word is mentioned....in this case...the word is "connect". Oh well, just poking a little fun and no harm intended.....it is always good to have quality soft water for all the reasons mentioned. 👍

🤣 no kidding! But in all seriousness, I’ve never really worried about the quality of drinking water per se but the recent findings of sedimentation and the damage it can do is enough to make you pay attention to filtration. In fact, I just got off the phone with another friend who has a clogged solenoid valve from sedimentation! I guess sandy water is the sign of our times. In the meantime, "CONNECT" "CONNECT" "CONNECT"...have a drink on me! 🍻🥃🍸

Why..oh WHY did you have to bring my attention to how many times I said “connect”!?!? I’m running out of drinks!😂 Oh well…at least I didn’t use “and, um” or “like ya know”. Haha
