Great encouragement on breeding Medaka. i acquired my first two this July, the last two in this county, (in England) and have had a delightful time watching them. I learned a lot by watching Ryo Watanabe's videos in Japan and how the Japanese have enjoyed them in their mini ponds for hundreds of years. Now my female started spawning after a couple of days and I managed to harvest a few batches of her eggs. The male seemed to dance about her once in awhile as I thought he was fertilizing the eggs still stuck to her. I am now just at two weeks since the first spawn. I hope what I see are little eyes inside the eggs. I had one shocking experience when one later batch that I put in a separate 4 litre jar disappeared the next morning. I had left them hanging on some Elodea plant. Completely gone!! I searched with light, no sign of eggs and then discovered a young blood worm, not totally red yet, that must have snuck in when I added some water from my rain barrel outside. It was quite small itself but I am sure it ate the eggs!! I fed him to one of the parents as he was still small enough for their small mouths. Blood worms are a larvae of some flying insect. Beware of them around eggs. The last unfortunate thing that happened two days ago was I came down and my male was dead! Why? I can only surmise. So sad, now I must find another mate and may have to pay a lot to have one shipped from some other place in England as I see there are some. Two aquarium shops said with the pandemic it is hard to get their shipments by air from the countries they buy them and to keep them at a reasonable price. Just to say I have found these little fish have given me some other interest during this strange time in our world. Who would have thought a little fish could do this for an elderly widow! I don't feel elderly, though!!

I used this method with my summer tubs. I pulled moss 3 times during the first 6 weeks or so. When I broke down the tub a couple of weeks ago, I ended up with 150 fry. I had higher fry survival rates once the water went green. I plan to do some selective breeding over the winter and early spring. The fish all look good, but they're not breeding true. My hope is to improve that over the winter and spring, to get a jump on next year's outdoor season.

I’m hoping to get a breeding group of 6-12, I’ll keep and breed them outside all year round. Winter will do the culling for me, all I have to do is add some new genes every so often and I’ll have very hardy medaka. They are hardy because there is a high cull rate if you allow them to overwinter. If people start inbreeding them in warmer water, they will become noticeably weaker.

I have a group of 5 younger orange medaka rice fish in a 5 gallon growing out but I notice one of the females has been having like 2-3 eggs (nothing big) hanging from the under fin so I just threw a small breeder mop in the tank just to see if I can get a few eggs.
