Clean up/smooth out the lava rock in a brass cleaner. Doesn't need very long just put the rock in by itself

Thanks for the useful info, it was timely for my project. I just got into Medaka. In spring I'd like to get a few more varieties as eggs or fry and start keeping a few small ponds outdoors and trying to figure out how make them sustainable.

Perfect vid for what I needed! I just picked up 20+/- platinum Medaka eggs at last San Diego fish club meet. They're in a mason jar now and I think they'll hatch soon as I can see their little shapes and eyes! Too awesome! But I need to set up their future balcony pot/ tub home. I don't want them to survive, I want them to thrive! Thanks for the info! ✌️

I pack my tubs with hornswart and other plants because it supports bugs and other good stuff for the fish to eat (they are huge and I rarely feed them- im in subtropics though). Also I thought snails ate the eggs, but never found anyone who was 100% sure.

You made me realize what I should have mentioned in the Video. This is my grow-out tub for my potential future breeders. I keep it bare as possible for ease of inspection. My OG's & mixes are in a Jungle environment and as you mentioned are self sustaining. I do include ramshorn snails in my breeding environment as well but have yet to really notice them going after the eggs. I was told once by a breeder in Japan that they will eat the infertile eggs because they are soft, but I have not personally witnessed it. I should setup a glass aquarium and experiment. I read snails eat the eggs aswell but I've never had this problem mainly the adults eating the eggs or fry.

@@Frogeyess I don’t collect eggs or the fry from this setting. But yes, the adults will eat the frys for sure

FYI, I use a Rubbermaid 300 Gallon for my goldfish and minnows and they winter over in a 6a zone. I break the top ice if it has been on longer than 3 days. Wind chill at the city limit has been recorded at -35F. Do not move frozen fish or disturb them in anyway, just leave it. Don't feed them either.

hello, having bought eggs online I am keeping them indoors at about 23 degrees as it is still cold here in the uk. They are in a small plastic tub untill hatching and then move the fry to a larger tub with some lava rock, elodea densa and a little algea. I feed with a little Hikari first bite every few days, but notice most of it ends up at the bottom of the tank. I have introduced a few ramshorn snails to prevent water fouling. The fry are growing but very slowly, Do Ineed to do water changes? I do top up due to evaporation. I would be very grateful if you could reply and offer any advice, Regards, Tony.

Hi tt. Leave eggs in a cup of water + methylene blue until the eyes form. Remove the eggs into a container (10 to 15 / 2 Liter of green water) @ 23c to 26c until they are at least 1 cm. Remove the 1 cm juveniles into a 5+ liter tub. At Stage2 you want to feed infusoria + phytoplankton + the smallest dust of floating food you can find. Top off water only (I too use Ramshorn to eat the remains). At Stage3 It will be safe to send them outdoors if the temp does not go below 10c. By the time they reach 2cm they are ready for outside regardless of the cooler temps. Hope this information answered some of your questions. Hit me up anytime Medakahead!

Lots and lots more plants with their leaves in the air. Recommend Lebanese cress floating in a basket style container. A higher water level may help in hot weather.? In the second season once you have hundreds of fish start being very careful about which adults you choose to raise fry from in separate tanks. You will have dozens of adults that don’t have the ideal colours, avoid breeding from these fish in my opinion.

I never heard of the Lebanese Cress plant. A fern like foliage herb. Interesting. I will check it out. And yes, I do like deeper tubs (12 to 18 inch) to combat both the cooler and hotter seasons. I use these tubs for my growouts and select the parents in the spring for breeding. Usually just two pairs. Thank you for chiming in Alan!

Hi. Yes they do well. The amount of food will dictate the size of their colony. Monterey weather will be fine through out the year. Thank you for chiming in WC!

@@RedEyedFRONTOSA As for the Medaka currently Miyuki, Yozakura. Ramshorn snails are mostly red.
