How to Breathe When You're Trapped on the Bottom and Getting Crushed

Спорт

Being able to breathe when you're grappling is important, especially when you're trapped on the bottom and all your opponent's weight is crushing down on you. Here are my best physical, psychological and technical tricks for dealing with this terrifying situation!
The claustrophobia article referred to in this video is available here: www.grapplearts.com/grappling-.... It has consistently helped a TON of BJJ, grappling and MMA students deal with their claustrophobia issues on the ground.
Good luck with your grappling journey!

Before I watched this video, I thought it would say with more training you’ll get used to it. I had no idea I would learn so much technical knowledge.

The open mouth breathing seems like it would work really well. Happy to try this as there is a guy in my class who gets me into suffocation mode on a regular basis. I haven't tapped but I've come close. Might be nice to not panic for a change

It's no joke. Lots of "unnatural" positions we're not used to being put in. Learning to breath and building up cardiovascular endurance for rolling is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Love this, thank you again sir! I didn't realize how much I struggled with claustrophobia in BJJ until I started forcing myself to start in bottom of side control. It's definitely a work in progress, but when I was still fresh it wasn't uncommon for me to tap to pressure. Now they actually have to choke me ;)

One thing that has transferred over from running and yoga for me that I find useful. Alternation between diaphragmatic (belly) and thoracic (chest) breathing, depending on how the pressure is being put on. Unless your opponent can cover 3/4 of your torso or is covering your airway, then it is possible to breath. I like the fact that you bring up the psychological component, too many people trigger their fight/flight nervous system too much, thus taxing your oxygen supply. Thanks for the vid as always.

This is (one of the) original reason(s) why pinning in Catch wrestling for an extended period of time was considered equivalent to winning the match. It will not just allow you to breath, but also move more fluently and your limbs are stronger because they use your core muscles. Later the victory time for pinning was reduced to only 5 or 3 seconds, and even later the idea was introduced to Freestyle wrestling (son of Catch wrestling) but for much shorter time period (just 1 second), and somewhere along the line the whole idea of staying off the pin for being able to breath, move and keep off the pressure got lost in history.

Training for about 9 months. I have ridiculous claustrophobia. It's really bad. It's one of the reasons I started bjj I need to conquer it. Wanted to push myself. Ive had good and bad days. I feel like a bitch when I tap from claustrophobia but going to keep at it. This is so helpful.

So it sounds dumb but i struggle with breathing in specific situations generally when in very high stress situations, i find this to be very very interesting. Especially the part about shallow breaths when you have lots of pressure on your chest. Martial arts has helped me to face many problems so far and it continues to build my strength in areas that i would never have imagined... so i appreciate the sharing of ideas and knowledge

The issue of grappling with bipolar disorder: I didn't think it should be ignored?....................................terrifying feelings of a huge person pinning you down, and there's nothing that you can do about it? You can't help, but start screaming!! and swearing at the person!! it's like being trapped in a nightmare!!! And, ultimately, you're expelled from the school-over and over.

I started BJJ late, the week of my 60th birthday. For the first 4 months or so I would feel barely controllable panic with full body weight on my chest, especially if my knees were to my chest and my partner was putting his weight on my shins. Eventually I learned to relax, and consciously take the deepest breath that I could until I figured out a way to escape.

I think the most important thing is using your bones to protect your body. Your arms and your legs. The hard stuff in front of the soft stuff. Turning obviously helps to because it takes the weight off of your diaphram. But yeah i try to get out framing pushing shrimping ect but if you cant thats how to survive

Good topic/video. I didn't see this position mentioned here, or in your blog post but perhaps I missed it - turtle position and a big opponent is over your head/shoulders holding body clinch, or headlock and their A4/A5 size gi is draped completely over your head all the way to the ground. Space isn't tight, but the air gets hot and super thin relatively quick. It gets hard to breathe and a feeling of suffocation sets in. This is a disconcerting position for some, including myself. I'm usually fishing for their jacket and reeling it in to get to the light before anything else. 'Open the chimney' so to speak.

I got my back taken, I wasn't too worried, I started to slide out, but then my partner snapped a tight body triangle on me just as I exhaled fully. I started to panic a bit, and then tried quick shallow breaths using chest only, and it worked well enough that I could calm my mind and continue to slide out of back control.

I recently returned to judo after a break of 15+ years.... The hardest part is definitely the feeling of panic and claustrophobia when rolling. I'm not in a bad shape at all but the feeling of slow suffocation, the panic that increases my heart rate and makes my breathing inefficient, the heat generated by breathing into my own gi, and going at it again right after finally tapping with no time to fully recover.... That was definitely surprising for me since I remember no such feeling from when I was younger. It's almost scary to think about practice now, but I think it also gives me a serious perspective on the necessity of being able to avoid such situations and also overcoming this feeling (from a self-defense point of view). This video has some great tips that I'll be sure to put to practice!

When I started BJJ I was terribly claustrophobic. Certain positions that I would find myself in were very troubling and would trigger great anxiety in me. Over time this lessened, but was still an issue. The thing that helped me the most was to purposely place myself in the positions that bothered me the most. It surprised me the difference this made for me mentally. If I placed myself there it was a choice that I made to overcome my fear. As I continued to practice this the positions became easier for me to deal with.

I've never "freaked out" but I did tap to pressure once before because of this reason: not being able to breathe. I am a woman, and I had a 285lb man flatten me out and chest to face while rolling. My arms were trapped, so after failing to fight for frames I just wanted to tap and restart. I was kinda mad at myself for tapping to that, but at the time I didn't know how else to combat it. I was only about 2.5 weeks into BJJ, now going on 2 months. I never tap to pressure now because I know what to do, and this video helped me for when I roll with bigger and more aggressive opponents such as the guy I mentioned.

That doesn't solve *this* problem. It only evades it. While you certainly want to be able to stand up in a self defence situation, if you don't have good defence/survival skills on the bottom you may find yourself in serious trouble if someone attacks you as he's probably not going to warn you that he's going to jump you and there are decent chances you could end up on the ground willing or not. And if you can't breath properly, you probably can't escape the pin. After all, survival (and with enough skill gap, attack) from the bottom is the real big innovation bjj brought to grappling as far as skillset goes (along with the heavily positional approach).
