How to Break in a Break in a Glove

Due to the increasing number of requests, I decided to do a demo video of how I break in a baseball glove. Please keep in mind that my process of breaking in a baseball glove is solely mine and I will not be held responsible for anyone's mishaps when performing this process. On my website in the "FAQ" section, I have written out this process in detail.

Personally I think the best way is to just play catch with it. It takes a long time but the end result is a better shaped glove.

Thanks for the video. I grew up playing baseball and I always just broke mine in playing catch either with someone, or would throw off a net that would allow the ball to bounce back. Now that my five year old is playing, I'm having to break his glove in for him. This video helped out a lot. Thanks

The working of a fold on the thumb is something middle infielders do to get the ball in and out quicker, especially in double plays, and especially by 2nd baseman. Breaking in hard on the V alone can create a crease, which can interfere with the smooth flow of the ball in and out of the pocket. Outfield, has a different set of priorities, for which your methods and fold emphasis are great.

I assume this same process works fine for larger gloves (for slow pitch softball). Funny thing is, I've been playing for 5 seasons and still have no clue what it means to break in a glove, where a pocket should be built... etc. My left hand is always hurting after games. I'll try this method. I have small hands so so gloves never feel comfortable to me (I feel like I have zero control of the pinky and ring finger of the glove. I'm sure that breaking in like this will help.

I bought my son a Rawlings red SPYPT1-2ROW at a great price but I have caught with this glove, steamed it at home and put NOKOMA glove conditioner and afterwards beaten this thing silly with a mallet and still is stiff as heck. Only thing the steam (home made) really did was kinda toast the tips on some of the laces. What gives? Can the stiff laces be softened again? I cannot make this thing to close softly. It’s even hard for me. What did I do wrong?

The reason for the thumb crease, which is what i do. Is to completely close the glove around the ball , being an outfielder/1st baseman. Also, when doing the thumb crease some people put 2/3 fingers in the pinky hole, for more control.

you broke that in so so so so so wrong its unbelievable. If you close your glove with one break point you need to quit baseball. There is supposed to be a break point on the thumb too. It keeps the pocket large enough to where the glove will close almost around the ball, so it doesn't pop out. YOU sir, are horribly wrong.

My personal opinion is just to use the glove without any outside tools other than just simply using it. Just because it will naturally break in to how you use it. Nothing is better than the natural use of a glove to naturally break it in. That's just my opinion.
