How to Break a Masterlock U-Lock bicycle lock
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Many bicycle U-locks that come with a round cylinder type key can easily be unlocked with a common pen.
UPDATE NOTE: After posting this video, Masterlock contacted me and replaced my lock for free. They said the two customer service reps I spoke to should have replaced my lock and they apologized.

Thanks! Took me less than 5 mins to unlock my master lock. Had my bike sitting for over a year because I lost the key and just didn't care.
Thanks for posting, this is incredible, I've had these types of locks on my motorbikes for years. Idiots insulting him, he is EXPOSING the problem, not training thieves.
Saw this video a few years ago and so glad its still up... Thanks for posting dude!
Thank you for my new bike.

I appreciate your thouroughness and the way you presented this. Very professional and without annoying music. Hope you post any info you get from "MasterLESS" locks!
Thanks for the info. I am currently thinking of buying a lock for my motorcycle and stumbled upon your video. You just saved me 30 bucks and gave me the opportunity to reconsider my options.
I'm glad someone made a video about this because the guy at my local bike shop warned me of this. Luckily it seems that only the cheaper bike locks these days use this style key. Sadly most Master pad-locks can be cut with bolt cutters too. I don't think I would consider them quality anymore.
Great Job! Thanks for spending the morning with me and all the information Steve
Thanks for making the public aware of these types of locks. I had no idea before....
Your video is so much more charismatic than mine. I can't believe these types of lock are still for sale.
thanks for showing us your find sir. iv just bought a bike of my dreams and dread the thought of loseing it. many thanks.
Thanks for the info brother. I'm glad you put this out there and now I'm going to warn EVERYBODY that I know about this. Have a great day bud.
Thnaks for the upload, bike got stolen and looking for a good lock. cheers
Thanks for posting this. My bike lock key no longer worked and so my bike was "permanently" locked up and I used a bic pen to open it 2 minutes after I saw your video. I did need to use a rubber glove however for gripping but it worked.
The pen is mightier than the sword.. EVERY FUCKING TIME
I was in need of a new bike... now I just have to find one with this type of lock. Thanks man!
Just wow... thanks for posting! Ps I'm sure master knows all about it, they are aiming for a price point and think marketing is better for selling locks than working locks. And they might be right as they are one of the most popular lock brands out there. Thanks again for posting!
Thank you. This has convinced me to buy a new lock for my new bike.
Thank you for the video! I lost my key and haven't been able to get the lock off. This will help me sooo much!
He helped maybe a ton of people who had no idea how easy it is to unlock this kind of U-locks...
Good for contacting the company, now is better
Wow, crazy. Didn't even know this was possible until I saw your video. Thanks!
Thanks for putting this video together.
I was unaware. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the heads up. I am in the market for a new set of bike locks. This helps narrow my choices.
Thank you for the heads up! I just purchased a bike and would like to keep it.
Thanks for that myth buster experiment dude!
Well, thanks for the heads up! Was about to buy this one.
Thanks Howard for the info.
I was just about to buy one of these, thanks for the information.
Thank you for your sharing. Ten minutes ago, I just can't open my bike lock. What a disaster!!! Anyway, I will try your method.
Thanks man. Very informative and helpful.
thank you, i was planning on buying that u-lock at wal-mart this week but then you save me other of my bike:)
Thanks so much.. amazing!!
Lol love the people who go for the burry head in sand approach and blame the dude for showing us, Goodjob for sharing this knowledge and helping me to keep my bike safe, I thought them locks were real good until now. Will tell my brother aswell he uses one!

Thank you soooo MUCH!! Thank's for the tip REALLY!! Been wanting my neighbors expensive bikes for years! Oooh happy day!! 😁👍🏻👌🏻💯💯💯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for letting us know.
Thanks for sharing! I'll know what to look for...or what not to look for.
Thanks again Howard! I'm a Black kid in Portland Oregon, just stole my 10th bike today. Thanks for the help.
thanks man for the advance about the master lock
Great - thanks for posting this! Good to know!
Wow. Thank you for the heads up.
Nice bit of work man to the point and informative ;)
Thanks for the info i never know its was that easy to do thanks again.
U lock and a chain lock is a good combo and easily placed under the seat or around the sides.
I was thinking to get that one because has 4 stars Thank you for posting this video
good explanation and very interesting.
Thanks for posting this tip
Yes... This is why these locks were phased out starting 2004 This tricks been known since the 90s same with the Kensington locks on laptops, you try showing this at defcon and you'll be called slow poke the rest of the year.
@Howardv You can heat the pencil, and then push it. You will have a key shape.
Disc detainer locks are the best option. Detainers use discs inside the mechanism instead of pins and are much harder to pick.
thanks, I always tought round cylinders were safer sinds the flat ones have also a weakness and can be opened by a certain trick
@Howardv they just didnt think you would test it. I have heard of the flat master locks being picked bumped rather easly. Or the cable ones being cut super easly. Or the combonation cables, where you pull the parts apart and figure out the compo in 30seconds.
@ThatCalFan I know that Kryptonite also used the circular key in the past, but mine had the newer slim key style. After having problems with opening the lock on my old lock and finding it is just a problem with Kryptonite locks I ended up getting the onguard, with the same slim key.
Holy Crap! I just tried it and it turned quick as the actual key, woa!
Wow, thanks for the heads-up
@brownfx every type of lock can be picked. I haven't ever seen a bike (other than mine. I use a Medeco padlock) locked up with a lock I can't easily pick. If you want a very high security lock, get a big chain and a Medeco padlock, even better, a Sargent & Greenleaf 951C with a Medeco key cylinder, although those cost about $2200 each. the medeco can be found on ebay for about $50.
Thanks for video! Off to check my own lock ;] and possibly buy a new one!
I wish I would of see this video before my Bike stolen..... Thanks for sharing this....
Thanks for the tips I won’t need to buy one now😀
@philiphuynh u-locks are actually pretty secure. it's the cables that people go for. you can easily cut through most of them.
Thanks a lot, was going to bye a similar lock like this but are going for something else!! Hopefully a better one.. ;)
thanks for let us know what not to buy.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for sharing!
Light to medium locks can be dealt with a set of bolt cutters. So always keep and eye on your bicycle.
Nice work, thank you for warning.
Very informative. Thanks for the video. Just one note. You seem to imply that the old lock was replaced by another one that probably has the same faulty design...
Strange kind of lock, never seen one of these in germany so far. And looks like I should be happy about that ;D
this happened years ago with kryptonite locks .over a decade ago , you think other lock companies would learn. the same method was applied as well and also in the news.
Well Done, Spread the Word
They recalled these style locks about 15+ years ago.
Thank you very much! Great job!
THANK YOU! I just tuned to your channel. Unbeknownst about your video, I recently purchased a MasterLock U-lock; to my dismay, the lock came without keys LMAO I can’t open it, but, Master DID change its locking mechanism, though; it’s a flat key. Now, my dilemma is that the lock came without a key and a locksmith is going to cost way more than the dumb lock. Lmao
Does anything still come with that small round indented key-lock combination? My computer case is "secured" with that kind of lock, and I imagine I could open that with any plastic tool as well, if I had to.
tnx alot man , i have that exact same lock, i lost the receipt and now i gotta buy a new one, pphhhffff tnx alot buddy!!
Too-sha ! not to meantion other locks that Master makes is also very easy to break into. I know, I've tryed other Master locks that I've seen on KZread and this guy is RIGHT!
Great Video
thanks to you i got me a new bike
Thanks for the info
Kryptonite did a recall and refund. Masterlock must be greedy. Thanks for uploading this. Nearly got a masterlock. I just ordered a Magnum plus 300 instead (UK brand...branded onguard in the states me thinks).
@Howardv But did Master Lock replace the one in the video with another one like the one in the video, or did you get an up-graded lock? If the replacement work out to be a better lock?
You just put them out of business hahahaa, but good to know

+Chris Burton Not. This video was put out in '09. Master Lock is still in business.
Thank you very much.
(Actually, the video itself was useful, so thanks. My daughter just got a new bike, and we were heading out to get a lock for it).
@mcb0613 I sent a link of this video to Master Lock. They immediately contacted me and said their two customer service reps made an error as they knew about this issue and are replacing the locks for free. They sent me a new lock. They said they will re-train their staff and apologized. I stated this in the description of this video. Thanks for watching and your inquiry!
Hi. I would like to inform you that I'm just working on the bike lock - I think it will be the most effective ones of the existing ones. Take a look at the video: bike umbrella presentation. Below the video I posted a brief description of the lock. Greetings.
Here in the UK we have a lock classification board, and to be honest, most bike locks if you actually care about your bike should be silver or gold rating (the two best) and this technique will only work on the worst of the bronze classified locks
spot on pall!!
very much appreciated
excellent video thank you
I have one of those locks, except that mine doesn't use the cylinder key. Mine uses the old fashion reg key. Few days ago the key broke inside the lock, I can't get it out. Any tips on how to remove it? I have a limited tools in which to do this. Any advice would help.
@dmctactic dude, use a larm lock, they are hard to hack... they use combionation lock, and they are small extra lock so when they try to snap it, it will alarm like a car but not stop until a long time, and you gonna use combionation locks
You can pick the flat keys too, Combo might be your best bet.
Thank you!
DAMN!!!!! dude!!! Thanks for the info....
The British W177 freefall nuclear bomb used to use this type of cylinder lock as its master arming switch. LOL.
thanks man i just needed a new free bike :D
