How To Lock Your Bike - The RIGHT Way!
What is the best way to lock a bike? In this video I will go through the basic steps on how to properly lock your bicycle for beginners.
STEP 1 - Get a lock (a u-lock is the most common and very strong)
In this video, we are reviewing the U-lock from Via Velo.
amzn.to/3gpQt6n
STEP 2 - Find a good location to lock your bike
- well lit, near cameras is best.
- Something very stable with closed ends that cannot be removed.
STEP 3 - Attach most valuable sections first
- First connection should be frame and rear wheel
- Second connection should cover your front wheel.
STEP 4 - Double check everything
- remove any accessories (lights, computer, etc)

Actually, bike theft is a very common occurrence in Japan. Same with umbrellas. You leave them outside in the designated spot for wet umbrellas as you quickly run into a convenience store, and someone who didn’t have one decides they are going to take yours.
Cables aren't worth the cost of the cardboard in the packaging when you buy them new. I watched a video from the Lockpickinglawyer where he folded a cable six times and using just one hand, he managed to cut through all six layers of the folded cable lock all in one go using a ratchet wire/cable cutter. Cables of any kind only keep honest people honest. The U Lock would delay a professional thief with an angle grinder for about twenty seconds to possibly a minute depending on whether the lock was Sold Secure rated silver or gold. When I'm in a high risk area I have a gold rated U Lock AND a newly purchased two metre Diamond rated chain and lock which weighs 5.3kg on it's own. And even that's no guarantee my bike would still be there when I get back. But a heavy chain is much more difficult to cut than a solid U Lock especially when it can't be held against solid ground. Very few people intervene if someone is cutting a bike lock even in a public area. And if the person with the angle grinder just says that they lost their keys, what are they going to do? Of course, Japan is very different. A universal MANDATORY registration of all new bikes at time of purchase with the registration engraved into the frame is the only way to dramatically reduce organised bicycle theft. And NEVER wear a chain lock around your body for transportation. If you are involved in an accident or crash it could lead to causing additional seriously aggravated injuries, especially to your spine.

You look like a fan of that dude. Can you explain to me why he basically create picklocking device that is easy and cheap for everyone to buy online? I never understod why he did that
@tconnolly9820
4 ай бұрын
@@pedroamorim6481 No, I'm not a fan. He's really good at what he does and he can open locks in a few seconds that other professional locksmiths couldn't open at all. He is exceptional at what he does. But he doesn't just pick any lock blind. He may have weeks or months in reality to research and practice on that lock or another identical one before he chooses the optimum tool and approach for that particular lock to record on camera. He sells those kits for money of course. And 99% of people who buy them will never reach a professional standard with them anyway. I work in security. I've seen break-ins through the years where thieves have pulled off steel shutters and doors, broken through windows, walls, roofs, floors. Used diggers to rip open walls. All brute force one way or another. I can't think of a single lock being actually picked in almost 20 years. Most thieves don't have those skills. Walking past bike racks I see locks and chains cut and broken regularly and often the racks themselves cut occasionally. Can you recall even once seeing an opened lock of any kind or chain lying on the ground after being opened cleanly without force? I can't. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen occasionally but to be honest, it's got to be pretty rare. My greatest security feature to protect my bike is simply to make it much easier and more worthwhile for the thief to steal the other poor bastards bike instead. A big heavy hardened steel 2 metre chain now with two locks on it to lock it in an 8 instead of just an 0 and a D lock. It can all still be cut through in less than 10 minutes with an angle grinder but they're going to have to work for it and an unsecured chain is very dangerous to cut with an angle grinder. It would be much easier to just cut through the bike rack or something else and carry the bike off or more probably have a waiting van. A long chain also allows me a lot more options to secure a bike to light or power poles or to trees or wooden poles. I don't think any bike thieves bring a chainsaw with them, do you?
the pros always come out in comments. NO there is no sure fire way to keep a thief from taking something. BUT if you can slow them down it usually stops a thief especially in public. They dont want to take forever to take something. Its about speed. A good lock will at least slow them down. Lovely wife and she rides bikes..NICE!..thanks for the video!
This is the best instructional video I have seen, at just the right speed. Thank you so much!😚
Thank me later, I have a north rock fat bike it’s a great bike. I live in the hood and my last bike I got was stolen I used a thick wired lock that they cut. So I invited in a haven chain lock whe I lock it at home and a Ulock. But I also got a onvian smart bike tail light Anti-theft alarm. This thing works great and it’s only 35 bucks on amazon. Super sensitive when the bike is moved or a slight bump will set it off and it’s super loud. It just adds another layer of security. It’s remotely activated and covenant.

Having recently moved to Japan, I find your vids very helpful, perhaps pricey as I visit some or the stores and places you describe!;). For some reason KZread has been pointing me to bicycle lock pages and included yours. Just wanted to add that, while the tips were helpful, one should do a search on the lock you are using or contemplating, as it is surprisingly easy to overcome even the strongest with a little skill. The lock picking lawyer is one suggestion. This info should help one decide on the type of bike and length of time to leave one unattended. Fortunately of course, Japan is safer than most countries!

Your like will most likely NOT be picked.. no thief has the skill, motivation or tools for this. Most of the time they use brute force to get your lock open. If you have an angle grinder, yes, you can unlock every lock eventually, but there are some rare good but also heavy locks, where you will spend MINUTES sawing this thing open.

Bike locking is very much the same as locking your car doors, or having a “security system” sticker on your window: of course they won’t prevent a professional from taking your stuff, but it will deter the 95% of casual thieves.
U can invest in special security nut screws for the front and rear wheels which cost more than.bike locks. They can't be opened with anything other than the specialized.custom wrench. They're the best security investments u can make for ebikes.

I heard that one strategy of the pros is to bung up the keyhole so the owner can't open the lock. Then the thief comes back later when it's dark with the angle grinder and other tools.
🤩
Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit mini, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can TEXT you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything can happen, time is the most critical factor.
I'm really paranoid and use two u locks, a big one for the frame/rear tire and a small u lock for the front tire. When I tour, however, I don't use a lock. If my bike is ever out of my sight I ask if someone will watch it. When touring you never should need to leave your bike much, like work when you have too. Pretty much just using the bathroom and when I shop I leave my bike inside where I'm staying. Even when buying I sometimes buy from street venders while on my bike.

I locked up my bike in an underground supermarket car park with an Abus u-lock and cable. A very poorly equipped thief tried to cut through the cable, he\she must have spotted the u-lock and quickly decided to abort their half assed effort. If they couldn't get through a cable there's no way they could ever get through a high security u-lock! 🤣 I decided to use two u-locks from then on. 😀

I just locked the frame and front wheel when I was in the city. I will try getting the cable and use it to lock the other wheel as well. My lock is a 4 segment foldable lock. It folds up very compact (can easily fit in a hydration pack pocket) but has the strength of a U-lock. Unfortunately you can not find them anymore. You also might want to mention if you have a quick release seat clamp, you might want to switch to a bolt, instead of having to carry your seat with you all the time. Considering seats can cost more than $100 nowadays.

Look up Sheldon Browns technique, and about anything to do with a bicycle You just lock to the rear wheel through the rear triangle, as the wheel will not fit through the triangle and even if somebody used a hack saw to cut the frame, the wheels are still secured by the lock So all they would get would be a bicycle frame they destroyed trying to steal it Also pull off the front wheel and move it to the back to put the lock through it too As bolt cutters cut cables easy, so good bye front wheel, as thieves don't want to walk away empty handed Also for your seat, us a round nut and bout , then hammer it on a a chunk of steel to rivet it on there You will just need a grinder to change your seat in the future Unless you like carrying it around and resetting and trying find the sweet spot you had it set at each time you park your bike This guy decided to let his seat get stolen
