My main thought while focusing on breaking 80 was to play every 3 holes at 1 over or better. If you do that, you shoot 78 or better. Obviously it’s easier said than done but if you look at your 18 hole rounds as 6 separate rounds of 3 holes, you will learn to focus on the present and overall minimize your mistakes.

Hi mr. Short game I’ve watched a few of your videos and my game has improved enormously. I’m a 66 years old pensioner and started playing golf about 5 years ago, to be honest I’ve checked out so many videos for tips but I’m still hitting the ball everywhere. Since watching a few of your videos I’ve been practicing and my game has improved enormously. But the reason why I feel compelled to send a comment on this video is, I played golf on Monday and had 111 shots. I watched this video, planned the game like you recommend and knocked of 15 shots. Unbelievable. So thanks and keep up the good work because golf is fun. John from Sweden 🇸🇪

Yeah, as you say, i always found it came down to course management and staying out of trouble on each hole. Then it comes down to how good your short game is, chipping and putting. If I could get on or close to the green, I felt I could get up and down in 2 majority of the time. We as golfers, as least for me, I reached plateaus when it came to getting down 1 or more strokes lower on my scores. I have been a mid 70's to low 80's golfer and a couple times i have shot 69. So I know I can do it, but it usually just takes a few holes to ruin a good round. Thanks for your video advise.

Great instruction for course strategy! Recently broke my round into 6 (3 hole) rounds. My goal is to begin consistently breaking 80. It does help take my mind off outcome, and concentrate on process from shot to shot and hole to hole. Shot 39 on front, and 44 on back. Seem to lose some focus as the round extends to the back nine.

The best video about breaking 80 I have ever seen. I have only done it twice. 76 and 78. I shoot 80-84 every round. It’s my short game and off the tee as well. This was something I’ll put in play next week when I play!

Great video, Matt! For most of us, once you have a reasonably repeatable swing and cut down on the huge misses and big numbers, golf very quickly comes down to the mental game. Consistently doing anything in golf requires a lot of time, patience and perseverance. And our good old stalwart friend: complete and total obsession. But because improvement in golf usually means failing again and again in a dizzying variety of ways, it can get frustrating. However, that same difficulty means there's always something to learn. Always something to tinker with and try to improve. Greatest game ever played.

I’m back to trying to break 90. Before Covid I was shooting in the 80’s, but I haven’t been able to practice or play much since the beginning of the pandemic. My score right now is between 95-105 depending on how well I’m striking the ball on a particular day.

I usually shoot over 100 started watching your videos and worked on under 100 shot a few games under 100 in the mid to upper 90a mid 90s got to low 90s. And starting for under 90. Last game I played shot an 87. Par on the course is 70. So your videos helped me out a lot keep up the good work love your videos and thank you for those tips. I'm going to try and work on a few more under 90 games and then work on under 80. Thanx.

The aspect of creating a mental aspect of every shot counting and creating pressure is such good advice for someone relatively new trying to better their game like myself!! It's so easy to just want to relax and hit good shots when it actually doesn't count, especially on the range...but every time I put that mindset of "this s**t counts" into my practice, my next round is always more enjoyable. Love the content bro!!

Makes perfect sense. I have a couple of acres so I can spend a lot of time chipping and it has become the strongest part of my game. But I often do not take advantage of it and factor it into my strategy on some holes nearly as much as I should. I need to correct that so I can break 80 next year. Some good information brother.

Thanks for the great videos. Really like these type of vids. I started the year averaging 105, got down into the 90s, then one day shot an 82, then another 82 then an 84. I never, ever knew until the round was over. I never add score up when playing. I play each hole, never worrying about previous or next. It helps my mental state so much it’s crazy.

  • @HillbillyJedi88

Nice mental aspect for tackling the game Matt! To hit, or break 90 for the first time, I always mentally gave myself one extra shot to get on the green. If you're decent at putting and can usually 2-putt, it puts you right there in the low 90's and high 80's mark with a couple pars. Thanks for a great vid!

This video sums up my entire season. Have been chasing this goal all year. Hit 80 on 10/10 only because I shanked a driver on 18 into the water when I knew 3 wood was the right call. Good golfers don’t score by their good shots. It’s just that their bad shots are game enders.

  • @atxrich

Timely- I shot a best ever 83 the other day. The biggest difference for me was using 3 wood instead of driver on the tee, hitting greens more consistently and making putts. It’s a great feeling knowing breaking 80 is within reach!

How true with this video. Golf is a mind game for sure. The brain is your biggest club on the course. It seems to me that there is always one shot usually each hole that puts you in a stress mode. I play each hole at a time, if I don’t do well on one hole there’s another hole to compensate. We all want to do well but at the end of the day it’s just a game and we’re not professionals. Love ya brother!

I don’t think I’ve hit my driver for about 4 months. Past 2 seasons I’ve been ‘Mr Booming Slice’. Now I’m teeing off with 5 or 4 irons and landing the fairway every time. Never thought I’d break 90. Now it’s standard 🤷‍♂️ I’ve really developed a good flop shot and bump-n-run with a consistent 2 putt. I’m now breaking 90 and feel good about breaking 80 next year. Forget the hero shots. Manage the course. Dial your short game. Love this channel ❤️

Tried this today, my target was 45 on the back 9. I ended up with 4 holes meeting my target, one better, and 4 worse. So 49, average is 52. It really takes away the habit of trying to play the whole course at once, and pressuring oneself to take miracle shots in hopes of fixing past lousy holes. I look at the game completely differently with just this 10 minute video.

I would argue that creating/simulating too much pressure is a bad thing. I struggled breaking 90 for over a year even though my game was clearly good enough. I eventually broke 90 on a day when I didn't think 90 was possible. Shot a 50 on the front 9 and 38 on the back 9. I stopped worrying so much about the number after the front 9 when I thought it was out of reach. This relaxed me and allowed me to focus on hole-to-hole scores. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I added my totals for the back 9.

One thing that has helped me a lot is not adding up my front 9 score until the end of the round no matter how good or bad I played. Doesn't seem like much but it helps your mental a lot throughout the round.

That was a great tip, especially since I’m trying to break 80 right now. My focus is hole by hole 🕳 thank you 🙏

Great advice, inspiring. I stopped golfing in 2016, many reasons. I have been missing golf. Looking for inspiration to get back out there. I could not break 74. I remember one round where I was 6 under going to the 17th hole. Can you guess what happened? I ended up shooting a 74...

Scoring average for 2021 season was 82. Starting to break 80 more consistently in the back end if the season as I chip away towards CAT1. Need to shave a couple more off the index.

Golf is Mental game, to break into 70's yes course management and mentally thing positive, don't get 1 bad hole get into your head, you still can recover, last round I played last 4 holes triple bogey/par/birdie/birdie(chip in). I play off 8. Last round i scored 79.

As always... A very informative and practical video. Each week watching the professionals on tv makes me wonder how some of them make the choices they make. Sometimes they try to be too perfect and just end up blowing the comfortable lead they had and end up losing the tournament. Do you think it is their ego that handicaps them? Or is it the adrenaline that just takes over and causes them to take unnecessary chances that don't work out very well sometimes? Did you see John Rahm mess up on that 10 inch putt, tapping his putt only one inch? That had to be a mental mistake. Unbelievable how that could happen though. And to hear how many great players miss the cut line from week to week also. Thanks for your intriguing videos and insightful information. I haven't played in years but want to get started again and so enjoy your instructional help.

Thanks for your great advice, I would love to get my game more consistent. If I can continue to follow and remind myself of your tips I know that I can do it. At 66 years old and my adjusting is still in progress with the slower swings finding the use of woods, hybrids much more common.
