Last three months I’ve been taking only 4 clubs to the range - 9 iron, my 50, 56, and 60 Vokeys. Every shot under 70 yards, most 10 to 25 yds. Not nearly as much fun as bombing drives and hybrids but I need less work there. I then hit the putting green for 30 minutes. My goal every round - no double bogeys. Rarely happens. Last 3 rounds (54 holes) - 1 double bogey, zero 3 putts, numerous up and downs for par, zero duffed or scalded chips. Preaching to the choir, but short game is where it’s at and watching you and how you manage the course has really helped me. Thanks bro!

started golf 3 months ago and have been playing famously bad (124 bad)... yesterday I tried to stay positive over every shot and went 10 over through 9 holes... crazy to think I have the ability to shoot a 92 but I've been well over the hundreds. golf really is between the ears

100% agree. I started last year. Before I start my swing, I take a deep breath, and then think about nothing. Once you learn the fundamentals, its all about establishing muscle memory through practice....IMO

Your mindset is perfect for your skill level. You play smart golf and have emphasized putting and the short game and you're smart enough to understand that a bogey is a perfectly acceptable score on a tough hole or following a poor shot. If I could offer any advice at all it would be this: Your shot tendency off the tee is to pull/draw/hook the ball left (I'm very similar and play to a 3 hdcp). You could benefit from teeing the ball up on the far left side of the tee box and aiming down the right side of most holes. I notice that you tend to just automatically tee the ball up in the middle of the teeing area on every hole. Give yourself a little more margin for error by using the full width of the tee box and tee the ball up on the left side. You are allowed to stand outside the box as long as the ball is between the markers.

Shot 46 (+11) on the back. I always come back to your videos and I'm going back out in a bit to try to break 80 for the first time! Thank you Adam for the awesome content.

Not true. Double chipping, not getting off the tee consistently, missing short putts, and hitting shots fat/thin will kill any score. Even though Adam doesn’t have a conventionally great swing he knows how to make contact consistently and his short game and putting is actually really good. Being able to execute the right strategy takes good enough ball striking and short game where you’re keeping it in play consistently.

It's pretty simple math; most courses are par 72, so getting under 80 means being +7 or better. The more pars the better, and going +2 on a single hole makes totaling +7 or better a challenge. I think you've said in the past that you should never follow a bad shot with a dumb one (if you didn't you should start).

I cannot agree with this man more I’ve only been golfing for two years and the most important things I believe he preaches - don’t take it too Seriously you’re not going to the PGA and play to control or limit your damage. I was an over 100 golfer year one. As bad as 130. My second year in Golf, I averaged 90 by the end of the year and was able to card a 79. Mostly this was me realizing that just because I’m 250 yards from the green doesn’t mean I need to hit my Threewood. And if I go into the water off my tee shot calm down and make sure you make a solid second shot Be safe off the tee and make sure your second shot is just good contact don’t worry too much about where it lands. Just make sure you have a good solid swing that’s what’s help me.

"So why do so many ams struggle to break their scoring barriers on layouts like these?" Your answer was literally the entire answer. Guys pull their drivers and rip on them so hard that even if they hit the ball perfect the landing zone where you wouldn't behind a tree for those distances would be 25 yards. So on Parkland courses like this yield massive scores because you're playing pinball in the trees.

To hell with besting 80. Shining at the local Fat-Shot Tourney matters more than chasing something that ain't gonna happen. Crispy shots with a proper stroke incur a penalty; moving the ball requires what comes natural -- hitting the ball fat, laying sod over the ball. It is difficult to embrace one's personal ineptitude but to win at shi^^y golf that's what is demanded.

An “average” male handicap per USGA data (last updated 1/3/2024) is 14.0, who Cap Patrol predicts will shoot 79 only once every 12 years. Even a 13 handicap is expected to shoot 79 only once every 6 years. Better golfers tend to keep handicaps, so all of this data is skewed lower than it would be for the general population of golfers. Needles to say then, if you’re breaking 80…you are *not* an “average” golfer.

You swing from 120 yards in is clutch. 80 yards in really clutch. That’s what separates you from us 18 handicappers. You are almost a scratch golfer.

I love your commentary and attitude but it drive me nuts that you track "unobstructed" drives instead of FIR. A clear shot from a ball deep in the rough can be just as damaging as a ball in the trees.

It can be but it rarely is. I'd rather be 120 out from the first cut than 150 out from the fairway in virtually every instance, personally. I do track FIRs for handicapping purpose and I find that there's no discernible correlation between FIRs and my score, whereas the "unobstructed drives" stat gives me a much clearer picture of where I lose strokes.

Ball don’t like. Your best swing coach is the ball. Looks like coaching is paying off.

You can still have fun with bad golf. You cannot have fun with a bad attitude.
