So cool you’re a body boarder. I’m from Hawaii and you’re too young to remember wooden paipo boards were what we used before boogie boards were developed. We made our own out of plywood and resin back in the day. A friend of mine’s husband long ago made the first boogie board prototype and we all thought he was nuts. He sold his design to some company back then (Man I’m dating myself haha). We love watching you!!

You can use a small board. Just use it as a hand board, extend it way out in front of you. In Waikiki, McDonalds doesn’t have trays, because people were always stealing them to ride waves.

I laughed at #11. A good rule of thumb for board size is 2 or 3” above your belly button. After a day or so of jumping into the white water of a wave that has already broken you will probably be bored. Where you really want to be without fins is in the sweet spot where the waves are cresting but not yet breaking but you can still stand. So you will probably need to master “duck diving” to get out there (look for videos). And I have two tips for catching waves. First don’t be scared to kick your feet even without fins. You will often be able to catch up from a late start. Second I like to do what I call cocking the board. Right before I push off with my legs I use two hands on the front of the board to push it into the water pretty vertically. It will pop up like a cork and helps with the take off especially if the water is a little deeper.

Greetings Chris! I had to comment on your Body Boarding video. 1. You are absolutely correct about avoiding those styrofoam body boards and the kind you have in your hand, you will be able to pass it down to your grandchildren. Hmmmmm….. those waves behind you are kind of lame. The NJ shore has some nice wave action. The biggest thrill one can get while boogie boarding is when you finally catch that great wave and you are flying into the shoreline. But unbeknownst to you, someone wiped out in a wave or two in front of you surfaces around 3’ in front of you and the expression on their face right before you ride over them. Now this isn’t done on purpose, but it’s kind of unavoidable. Take care and we have to see the Traveling Princess boogie boarding!

I'm in Oceanside, planning to go out to bodyboard for the first time. Do you have a video on how to do it or what else can you do? Do you just walk up to the wave turn around and ride it out? That's it? lol Most of the videos are about equipment. I want to know what all you can do with a bodyboard.
