I am a 55-year-old bodyboarder I started when I was 12, I remember what made me want to sell my skateboard to buy a bodyboard... It was the ads for Morey Boogie on surfing magazine around the late '70s. The rider on those pictures? Jack "the ripper" Lindholm. He rode the biggest Pipeline monsters on a board that many of us today would consider totally inferior to today's high-tech equipment ( I'm riding a Snyper these days) In 1985 left Puerto Rico and I joined the US Coast Guard to become a Rescue Swimmer. Lucky for me I got stationed in Hawaii and once had the privilege to surf with Jack the Ripper at a break called Pyramid Rock at the marine base in Kaneohe, the waves were some of the heaviest I have ever surfed, but Jack destroyed every single monster that popped out of the depths...

Back then, McDonald's Hawaii Kai drilled holes in the serving trays to keep from being taken to Sandys and Makapuu. Went to grade school w/Jack not knowing he would turn intonJack 'the ripper' at Pipeline.

Yep great story I'm of similar age body boarded in oz saw a TV show called, just for the record about Mike Stewart surfing pipe and the championships he had won and it inspired me to bodyboard and years later I met him on a signature visit at a local surf shop he still in my opinion is the goat of the sport nobody has done more for the sport...

They had their moments in different times of the evolution of bodyboarding.I started in mid seventies when they just had the kit and it had to be put together yourself.I went to high school with Jack lindholme in Honolulu ,went to the beach many times in "Sassafras" his van.He was the most humble person,he would drop knee the biggest and nastiest pipe had to offer with style and grace equal to Jerry Lopez.Another fearless big wave charger of that time was Daniel (Kaniala) Kaimi who was the only boogie boarder who reguarly show up when the Bay would break,he was also known for his 360 spinners.There is those who do them and then there are those who do them in the right place at the right time,with flow,that was Kaniala,then there was the Haole boys from Sandy Beach Pat Caldwell and Ben Severson.Also coming up a few years behind was Kainoa Magee and Fred Santos,then there was this Haole boy from Kona who showed up and the rest is history,Mike's the best of all time in my opinion because he came around at the right time and put boogieboarding on the map,and thats when it took off and Mike had a big part in it.Thats why I consider him the greatest.I am proud to have known and been friends with every one of them.Thanks for letting me share my manao from the 808,aloha. Stewart has set the standard from 80's till about 2000 knows pipe so we'll, its crazy to watch his old footage he was so far ahead if everyone else just flow with the wave, later guys like Jeff hubbard, ryan hardy, andre Botha, ghillereme tamega started catching up, but even all the pro surfers know and respect mike Stewart

im 14, and i LOVE bodyboarding so much. but i would cry if i was near some of these waves 😭

I agree but the greatest in competition to me is GT(Guilherme Tâmega). He was unbeatable in his prime and he was the guy that dethroned Mike Stewart and make the game different by putting on aggressiveness in his manouvers.

Awesome,,,,,,,,i have always like boogie boarding more than surfing,,, i used to live i Mexico in the 70's, we would go to San Blas,,,,,most went for the long surf,,, i went for the short boogie board breaks, i would come flying off huge waves,, the Mexicans heads would be ducking everywhere when i came flying by,,,, i got some good sand burns,,,, but man is this FUN,,,,,,,,thinking about going to Escondido this winter,,,,,,, 61 now,, Lord i hope i dont drown,,, naw,,,, i'm in pretty good shape,,, we will see

All these names bring back so many good memories It’s not a list without any of these names on it My son goes to the same school as Chris white’s son so I see him all the time So glad to be a grom in that time period as well “The source” vid with the teauhpoo competition is up there with one of my all time faves

Never bodyboarded, only grew up surfing and the BB where I was were not hardcore. My favorite out of these rippers is Ayaka Suzukie.

I'm riding a couple of Hubboards currently, super rad! Hardy's range is killer as well, NMD make good boards, the list goes on bro, depends on your climate and waves you wanna tackle.

In order to be great you need to do more then ride one style. 1. Prone, 2. Drop Knee, 3. Stand Up Boogie, 4. Switch, 5. Barrel ridding, 6. Air's, 7. Groveling, 8. Big Wave Riding, 9. Skimming. If you only ride one style you ain't as good as you think you are. . One Team 👊😎

These are all dangerous as I have done bodyboarding before but still be carful when riding waves

Perfectly stated. Mike and Ben pioneered breaks before these riders were out of diapers. Reeves, Lindholm, Sasaki and other spongers followed close behind LONG before the "Greatest Bodyboarders of all time" ever set foot in the ocean.

Amazing clips! The title, however, should be "greatest *modern* bodyboarders", as boarding is a traditional practice that predates modern video technologies. In reality, we really have no idea how many greats there have been or what they accomplished. Hopefully they would approve of these modern greats!
