SO glad you mentioned project management skills. I think that gets overlooked. I'd also recommend brushing up on your Microsoft skillset. Having advanced Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint skills that you can showcase could definitely set you apart.

Hi, Tim. Thank you for creating this content and sharing it for free. I've been in training for 10 years and want to professionally move into e-learning. I've been totally overwhelmed. Your content is so accessible; it gives me hope that this transition is possible.

Hello, my name is Fabiano, I'm Brazilian, I'm 43 years old and I've lived in New Zealand for 7 years. In Brazil, I graduated in Social Communication - Publicity and Propaganda and I have always worked with writing/copywriting. For a short time in the advertising market, but for more than 8 years with learnig designer education, creating content for various platforms (printed book, video and Elearning) and also at different levels of learning (child education, inclusive education, undergraduate/postgraduate, corporate training etc). Also in Brazil, I graduated as a chef, at first as a hobby, but it was working as a chef that I moved with my family to New Zealand. And in that area I stayed for the last 7 years. I have a huge appreciation for the profession and for everything that involves gastronomy, but the routine is exhausting and the need to be closer to my family and more present in my children’s upbringing/education made me start looking at content creation again. A few days ago I started researching instructional design and content creation, trying to keep up with trends, and even how this market is/is on a global scale, since until then I only worked on a national scale (Brazil). And in my searches I found your video and your approach to content development sounded very familiar to me, so I decided to share with you this little summary of my story because maybe you can give me some kind of light or direction on how I can start my reinsertion into this market. Any reading tips, courses (even if at an introductory level), materials, scripts and anything else you can share with me will be of immense value. I will go through my files and also look for the materials I wrote, and if you allow me, I can share them with you and who knows, something good can come out of this exchange. Regardless of anything, I thank you in advance for the content you provide here on the page. It has been of great help to me.

I am really inspired by the lessons you present in this video. I also got into eLearning development by accident. I was asked by a mortgage education company to do content research and writing first for one of their curricula. And I was paid what I consider to be good money. Then I asked myself what are they going to do with this content? I later on discovered they hired an eLearning developer. That's how I got here. 😀

Thanks for this video - great insight into the industry! I have a question. How do you go about finding work where I’m creating everything but using Authouring tools such as Articulate or Captivate? Hope that all made sense 😊

Thanks! I'm glad you've enjoyed it! To answer your questions, my best suggestion would be to look at the job descriptions rather than job titles. Titles are usually meaningless. Those jobs that are purely instructional design, rather than development, do exist. I don't know if that answers your questions...but let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
