Did a training cycle in Louisiana where we were playing OpFor and Partner Force for MARSOC. When we had down time, half of them were still wearing their Recon hats and said that Recon was the best time of their life. It was cool to see how much pride they still had for it

A couple things I would add in addition to Recon having the contract upon joining, is that with Recon, you also have Reserve and Overseas options unlike MARSOC. You have the part-time 4th Recon Bn. which has the only part-time overseas "cool-guy" USMC unit, a Recon Detachment at K-Bay. K-Bay and the surrounding area are pretty nice, plus Waikiki isn't too far away of a drive. Active Duty wise, only Recon can get stationed in Okinawa at 3rd Recon Bn. Also, BRC is only about 5 months long, vs ITC's 8 months long, and BRC doesn't have a selection board like MARSOC does. Finally, I'd recommend Recon because it's probably the best way to start off your Marine Corps career, out of all the jobs, and if you should somehow fail ITC, well Recon is a lot better than being in an admin shop or something.

1980 and fresh out of radio school I had orders to Okinawa, I was one out of about 5 people who were selected by a Gunnery Sergeant to go to 3rd Recon Battalion Onna Point. I don't think I ever even heard about Recon before that. My first 3 months were with HQ Battalion. Then my Gunny, the Gunny that brought me there said I would be going to R.I.P. school. He apologized and said I was the only one who could make it of the radio guys. Becoming a reconnaissance Marine was the best thing that happened to me! I benefit from it to this day!

When becoming a Marine Recon, are cadets peer ranked like they are with Army Rangers? Can you fail even if you pass all the tests like you can at Rangers school or RASP? Thanks for any feedback

Old Recon Marine and SOTG instructor here… it seems to me, that BRC was developed because Marines were not making it through Amphibious Reconnaissance School. In my day you had to do the Recon indoc, then you went to RIP while waiting for an ARS seat. You either made it or went to the Fleet. Sounds like you guys are giving Marines preparatory training to help them pass ARS… instead of seeing if they are the type of Marine who has what it takes to be Recon…

As a Marine myself (Infantry 0351 with 3/6 Desert Storm) I am tired of Rangers, Im tired of SqEALs, Im tired of Recon , Im tired of Delta. Im tired of the whole special operations community. I am tired of Marines who did recon as describing themselves as recon Marines. The term Marine is sufficient to tell everyone who you are. Everyone wants to stand out against everyone else to the point that things are eventually whittled down to just you. All that says about you is that you are a narcissist ," me,me,me" piece of shit with no idea about real teamwork and what it mean to be part of a team. An example would be you 1) join the Marines, 2) join the infantry as opposed to a POG MOS, 3) go recon, 4) go MARSuC, 5) go to some specialist unit no one has ever heard of before. Finally it comes down to you being in a class all by yourself manifested in some stupid way like Baddest Marine ever. Marine is what and who you are and that's all you need to be. Everything else is just a job you did in the Corps, it's not who you are. Keep in mind that the greatest jarhead of all time was Chesty Puller. he wasn't a raider, recon, marsuc, scout diaper, or any of that other bullshit. This is the bullshit the Army does. They fracture their own force by separating their members into different classes. That's why the Army blows .

Honestly, I agree. That’s probably what made the Spartans so mighty. They weren’t Calvary Spartan, or Helots, or whatever other division/job they were put in. They were Spartans. Simple as that. They weren’t an individual in the Spartan military, they were the Spartan military, if that makes sense. Also, the Marines didn’t want to have Special Operations because they didn’t feel the need to. They were Marines. No further explanation needed. So, I like your mentality
