No barrier to entry, just do it

For me to be honest i was always just mezmerised and fascinated by the many styles its done. Where most would see it as vandalism i saw it as a freedom of expression to get your art in a place for all to see that uses all different mediums. I love the fact that everyones style is different. When the game getting up came out thats when for me i wanted to do it myself so i started drawing everywhere. My dad was even cool rnough to let me tag the inside of my shed with spray paint . (I sucked ofc😂)There was an event in nyc where the artists featured would show and spray paint on cardboard cutouts. I met seen and cope2 that day. At any rate from there when i was 16-17 i started to take it more seriously and now years later still doin it!

i started graff at 12 yrs old, all my friends were trendhoppers and i just went with the flow as they quit within a year. it would make a great video reading these btw

The predecessor to me getting into graffiti was a teacher in first grade who thought it'd be a great punishment to put a cardboard box around my desk. This punishment was because when my friend and I got together- we became a distraction. But, now that box was around my desk, it became my own canvas/sketchbook. I went nuts and decorated the whole box. It was when I doing handwriting courses and teaching myself calligraphy in Third grade that I first got into tagging. It wasn't until seventh grade that I was doing runs.

Art has always been a big part of my life when life has turned to shit art has always been there for me i don't do just graff i do other art aswell i love it it's the best way i can just relax and not care about whatever else is going on in life good or bad art is my escape from so much shit

Been tagging since I was about 12 only really started getting into throws this year at 34 😂

ye ive been doing graff for like 4 months now and i know absolutely knoone else who does i do keep it to myself etc i even live in a big city but im just alone going outside i do sometimes miss someone to help or learn from

the main issue with a 12 13 14 year old doing graffiti is them actually going out and painting at 3 in the morning with no one else knowing they are there u can get hurt by someone who catches you

It's a dangerous lifestyle, for sure. I was out there at 11 years old, alone, in the streets and alleyways of NYC. Anything could've happened. But comparing graffiti writing to street gangs or doing drugs, and I'd take Graf as the safest bet every time.

@@matthewkorcz def way better than drugs or gangs but there is stil risk and alot of it esp if you aren't built for graff if your not built to fight a rondom guy who's tryna stop u u could get hurt

@@benji6864 you're absolutely right. I wasn't built to fight and got my @$$ handed to me once by a guy twice my size. That was after I'd been writing for 6 years. The cops also beat me unconscious when they caught me at 13, because I fought back and tried to escape. But compare that against doing drugs these days, where one hit of the fentanyl you don't see will kill you. Or hang in a street gang carrying a gun, and wind up looking like Swiss cheese after a drive by. I'd still take Graf any day, the odds are more in your favor. 😉

I saw the graffiti writer “So£” in action today in Korea Town. He looks like a cool and humble Hollywood actor. He was sporting pricy Gucci shades & a Polo vest. Gee whiz! He was going in. He slapped up 15 to 20 Hello My Name Is stickers in less than a minute. Cool surf! Go get it in, SOe!

I started writing in NYC in 1984 at the age of 10. My friends were all doing it, and I wanted their respect and approval. Graf was still king on the NYC trains at the time, although the movement was already in decline. I remember watching trains pull up on the D line in Brooklyn with full cars by Blade, Dondi, and others. Insides were a dizzying landscape of tags covering Everything as far as the eye could see. I was a vandal, not an artist. As a competitive kid, I wanted to "get up" more than all of my friends. I eventually got up more than all of them, combined. I was addicted to graffiti in a very short amount of time. I got myself arrested and beaten by police at 13 when I resisted arrest. I came back at 18 for a short time to do some borderline "art" on handball courts and walls. Serious, talented writers would call my work "toy", but this toy caught his 15 seconds of national fame (and has proof of it) by bombing consistently, so I'm good with who I am. I'm not a "King", but I'm certainly not a "New Jack", either. Just consider me "old school." I'm too old to run fast, now, so I'm not writing anymore. Graf (bombing or piecing) is a young man's sport. Even despite the problems the lifestyle brought me, if I could do it all again, I would go at it even bigger and harder. That's just who I am. I wouldn't encourage or discourage anyone young from entering the graffiti lifestyle. Kids need to be free to make their own decisions and mistakes.

Just getting started and suck. As I practice I wonder if writers go back to pieces or whatever and fix them. Sometimes I look at a photo and get pissed that something is missing or could have been done better.

Back when i was like 8 i started painting graffiti. Why? I dont know i just liked the letters. Then when i got older i learned it. And know its kinda bording so i am doing challigrapy.

Haha, first writing whit a Magic Marker was at 8years old. My first tag was at 13years old. A year after spay cans....... lots of fun

i started because i found a half full can under a bridge used it on the wall next to me and it was sick it was the most random shit

I started when i was 22. I didnt start going hard till i was 24 then got busted 6 months later at 25. I havent done anything till recently....but now i got a banging job and a house etc. Despite all that i wanna get back out there cuz i was never finished. I think being on the road seeing all of it on I-95 reignited that for me. 🤣🤣🤣

If you can operate a spray can, you're good to go.

I started tagging when I was younger and saw the consequences of getting caught. I didn't pick it back up until my forties. Now I put my graffiti on different things other than walls.

There is not really a certain age where anybody should "start" doing grafitti. And there should not be! It's simpy the parents responsibility to either let them do grafitti. Or even stop them from doing it! Most kids will do it anyway. And they are usually heavily influenced by other fellow kids, who teach and lead them. Same goes for starting out very late in life of course!

I started doing graffiti when I was 15 because my parents kicked me out and I was like "homeless kids so graffiti. That's logical" now I realize how ridiculous that is but lol that's what I thought back then. (I did fine, I'm doing fine. Just a funny story)

thank you for your work, and i had seen it when i was younger, thought it was cool but didnt understand the dynamics of it, as most dont when that young; Would play around with stuff but nothing serious,focus was on motocross and FMX,but i had some accidents that made it difficult to function and a old friend had shown me {for therapy} the more in depth stuff and " Infamy The Movie - Graffiti Documentary" was basically my introduction back in the day {23y.o} years went by and would play with handstyles mostly...tried some stuff on the wall and realized the learning curve was steep, and kinda lost interest...but past couple years i have been practicing again for therapy on paper and jus the past 6months i put some ok stuff up in a tunnel {at some point will try to send a pic of it for criticism :) little more interested in murals and the street art/custom signs for business{because it can bring income..},i understand the freedom aspect of graffiti,and love that,because its how we learn but as one gets older we find its better to use the talent for "good" rather then an ego driven mentality 505

One of my earliest memory’s in life is of me sitting in the bath room sink looking at myself in the mirror. My mom must have walked out for a minute but I got my hands on her lip stick and I totally hit that mirror! Actually I remember more of the after math but I do remember little bits and pieces of it. And again a few years later I got a set of those smelly felts and first day in the hallway of my house I drew a shitty little kid stick man driving a “choo choo train” I liked trains back then too! Lol! I don’t think I chose this shit it chose me.
