Don't even listen to anyone who's giving you shit for posting this. It basically just saved me. I have horrible anxiety and have trouble being in situations where I feel trapped or like I can't leave (like a hair salon). I used to go to a family friend who would cut it at her house but she moved so I've just had my mom trim it whenever it got too long.. For the first time in 5 years I look like I went to a salon to get my hair styled and it makes me feel so much better about myself.. I love it every time I look in the mirror

When she smiles it lights up the real. Omg!

I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I think the ONLY thing I noticed that I would suggest correcting is the scissors. I know professional scissors are expensive, but there is a reason why we don’t use household scissors to cut hair in salons. Process scissors also have a specific weight and balance to them that helps them to cut through even thick and coarse hair like a razor blade and quickly. When you’re trying to get even, shag type layers and to do an inverted cut on the ends, the sharper the scissors the better. I would recommend going to Sally’s or a beauty shop other than Wal-Mart and shelling out the money for quality scissors. You’ll get great results and lose less length in correction cuts over all. Otherwise you rocked it girl!!!

I agree better sissors. And she said she did it over with different sissors. I bought mine at Sally's they were originally $60 but clearance to $20 and I've used them for 5 years. Have cut my own hair for years now. I don't do it this way because I don't want as many layers so I do a different method that works our basically the same but doesn't have all those layers in back. I like it only on my sides and front with very very long layers in back.

I cut my hair all the time, but never tried pulling it forward. I pull it back, but then I end up with a curved bottom instead of straight. I would have loved to seen what your hair looked like brushed down in the back when you were done, so I could compare.

Hi! Your video brought back memories. I am now 70 yrs old. In the late sixties 3 of us in residence decided to do this. It was the Farrah Fawcett cut (a beautiful model and actress in her day.). We cut it much shorter-about a couple inches past the elastic. It came out perfectly.

Years ago I first watched this video and had doubts, and my doubts increased as I studied cosmetology in high school and learned proper hair cutting techniques. A year ago from yesterday after almost a year out of high school and not being able to afford a salon visit, I decided to turn back to this video. This was already a big step for me because scissors had not touched my hair since the 8th grade and it was long enough to sit on by this point. April 2018 I felt spontaneous and wanted to change my appearance for once, so I whipped out my shears and a pair of scissors and pulled up this video. The first round of haircutting I did on myself was a little too drastic in difference in length front-to-back, but I went for it again a few days later and ended up LOVING the result. My hair ended up being just past my shoulders, but it felt really short to me and I was obsessed. I loved the new look and the ends of my hair were nice and even, and a year a day later today I plan to cut it very soon. Thank you so much Mickie, you're a life saver

It worked great for me! I have slightly wavy hair, though, so any imperfection of the tips isn't that big of a deal. If your hair is extremely straight, just be really careful about keeping it even. It does work, though!

Oh my goodness, THANKS. I haven't been able to afford a haircut in years. Well- I mean, I could, but it feels like a waste of money to me, since I am lower end of the income scale. I never get anything fancy done, but it's always still $30+, unless I want them to mangle my head at supercuts. And they ALWAYS do. This is perfect, just did it in about 20 minutes. I actually put in a few more layers, just remember that the innermost side of the upside down pony tail need to be the shortest. Since my hair has a wave to it, never lays perfectly flat, I didn't have to snip the tip too much. It looks great!

I've cut my own hair this way since I came across another video similar to this one. I love the way it turns out every time. I also cut the length when it gets too long. I found another video that shows you how to cut the length yourself. It comes out almost perfect with the exception of a few stands.

I’m a licensed barber with technique training from many established industry greats. You did a great job. As another commenter mentioned, using even inexpensive shears meant for cutting hair would make this even better. And your hair is in great condition. I would suggest a soft balayage to blend your line of demarcation from the line at your mid length and delicately into your cold shaft. Brushing a cool toner through some of you blonde color on the lower half would soften some of the warmth on your lighter hair and really brighten your style. Keep up the great work! It is nice to see someone offering tips for a tight budget responsibly. When trying this cutting technique, I would add that less is more and one can always go back to take a little more off, but you can’t put it back on so use care and err on the side of less hair off the first time around. 😊

I was happy to see you do this video. I am a 65 year old woman and I cut my hair like this back in 1973. I’m glad you are teaching others to do it. 😘😘

I cut my own hair been doin it my whole life just about i do it similair except i dont put it into a ponytail tight like that i bend down n look to the mirror under lol actually probably easier her way but kinda the same result hers was lil more cut mine not so much i just trim w layers and when its short i pull it up i went to school for hair but didnt finish my hours due to physical complications so i know a lil about it she did good 😊

I should have left this comment years ago, but can I just say thank you so much for your video! I come back to this vid every time I want to cut my hair with layers and each time I'm struck by how kindly you explain everything. It doesn't feel like watching a tutorial (which generally involves me scrambling to try and follow all the instructions). OMG I finally found the courage to cut my own hair and i just want to say thank you so much because my hair turned out so beautifully. I'm 60 years old. And I would use this method all of my girlfriends would use this method in the 70's when it came to getting the Farrah Fawcett cut. But the way we did it was we bent over so our head was perpendicular to the floor and have a girlfriend brush your hair out. And do the same thing but only straight across. That makes all of your hair the same length when you're bent over but when you stand up you have all those beautiful layers that you seen in Farrah Fawcett's hair. I took your cost savings idea one step further. I went to Beauty School and I would cut hair in my kitchen on the weekends to make extra money. And when the perms came in in the 80s I did perms in my kitchen. And I would charge for the supplies needed and 10 bucks. So I would save my friends and myself Salon cost and make a little bit of extra money for myself because I was a single mother of three boys. So good for you girlfriend! Your confidence is what made me continue to watch you. I congratulate you for putting yourself out there. And not giving a s*** about those two just like to judge. You obviously know that our money is our power! And that's precious! Namaste 😔🙏 but to everyone else I want you to realize. Women have been abused since the beginning of time. It's time that women stop abusing each other stop judging each other and lift each other up! An exit The Feeding Frenzy of judgment. And just get back to that good old girl code that we used when I was a kid growing up. Otherwise we're no better than them. Elevate yourself ladies and support one another.

by the way M by mickie, I've been cutting my hair for years, as I had a car accident and lost my job, so I didn't want to have to spend hubby's money every month to keep my hair as I liked it. SO I learnt to do my own. And I began with this technique, you did a great job explaining. I've been cutting my hair for years (I cut my hair too often to go to a salon and I like to do things myself) and it's always been so abrupt and blunt and layer-less. This video helped me learn how to have my hair be like all the other pretty girls at my school. I'm disabled so I have very low self-esteem as it is and I never really felt pretty. About a month ago I watched this and did what you did and I love it! I feel more confident at school and I'm actually excited for school cause I feel like I fit in more. I am a hairdresser and it is self explanatory. Cutting hair is about angles and how u project the hair from the head when u cut it. If u pull ur hair all the way up and cut it, sure it is gonna create layers. Since the hair closest to where u pull will become shorter due to the distance from the scalp and to the level of where y hold ur hand when u cut. The furter away, the longer the hair will be. Love it:)

+M by Mickie I think it is great that people put out these videos because not everyone has the oportunity or means to go to a hairdresser so this is a great option. Color or dye is different. Hairdressers hate fixing others people's mess lol. And in this time and age one can learn everything in the world by just going on KZread. Even as a certified and professional hair dresser and MUA I have learned so much by watching videos and one can really feel the globalization;)

you can mix a little bit of coconut oil and a little bit of Moroccan argon oil and brush you hair twice a day while adding the mix of oils to it, it strengthens your hair and also gives it the silk like appearance

Also don't wash so often because you are losing all that great natural oil that makes your hair healthy naturally you can go up to a month without washing depending on your hair type and the products you use I know it may sound insane to you but do some research on it

You can get it soft by blow drying it after a shower And while your blow drying it run a brush threw your hair during the process, Your gonna blow dry it till its completely dry. That usually allways works

During these Covid-19 times, I'm so happy for this tutorial. My hair has always been a disaster but not being able to cut it every once in a while is hard.

Hello all! I do receive a lot of repeat questions on this video, I'll try to answer some of the same questions I get, right here for you… 1. Yes this really works (please read the comments below of others that raved about it) 2. Does this leave your hair in a "V" shape in the back? No, not if you cut it straight across as I show, it won't. 3. Will this cut give me layers? Yes, it will give you layers. 4. If you don't want layers, how can I cut my hair straight across? M by Mickie You don't need to explain yourself to anyone. I'm a broke college kid just like you said and I use this tip here and there. My dad's girlfriend is a hairdresser and she touches up my hair every six months or so when I visit, but in between, I can't afford $35 at the salon every month. I used to have unhealthy ends because I would let it go until I could get to a hair dresser 3 months later. This has made my hair healthier. If they can't understand that not everyone has time to go to a hair stylist, they probably need a reality check and need to realize some people don't have a lot of money for extra luxuries.

I just tried this and it worked perfectly! I have thin, long hair and took off 2 inches. the back remained pretty much straight across how it was before (which i did not expect!) and the layers are a nice touch. It did not help with my bangs of course, but it is for sure the easiest way to give yourself a trim. Thanks so much for the video, Mickie!!!

I've tried other videos before to trim my own hair; this is by far the best one - the thing that made the biggest difference for me was suggesting to hold the hair straight up as you cut it. It actually made a huge difference as opposed to some fo the videos I've seen where people hold it straight out in front and cut. The layers are much better. Thank you so much! :)

Mickie I did this cut again following your video and my hair turned out so nice. If I could get a hairdresser to cut my hair the way I want it I would let them but the last hair dresser did something totally opposite than what I asked. I started with a 180 not cutting much off then thinned it out with the thinning shears then followed up with your haircut technique and went outside and felt the wind in my hair and it was so nice. Even after requesting a 180 degree cut, layers, and thinning out from a professional my hair still felt like it weighed 10 pounds. It is still the same long look only a little shorter and so comfortable now and even steven. Thank you again for posting this video. 👍👍💇🏻‍♀️💃🏻

Omg you could be Melissa McCarthy’s twin!! You look just like her, right down to the smile and dimples!! You even sound just like her! Only difference is you have long straight blonde hair and she has shorter brown curly/wavy hair! You are absolutely gorgeous! And thanks for sharing. I first saw your video a couple years ago and decided to try it out, and it worked perfectly! I haven’t been to a salon in 2 1/2 years now because I do it myself after watching your video. I used to cut my hair this way many years ago. I forgot all about it until I saw your lovely video. This technique is so easy to do and nobody would even know that you didn't actually go to a hair salon to have it professionally cut. Great video.

I have tried it. It works out really well. I forgot the video one day and when I cut it again I held my hair to the front straight down it didn't work out so good. Not layer right so do it this way lol right from the video. You have beautiful hair. Thank you for showing. I haven't gone to a shop in 15 year's I always cut my hair. :)
