This is one of those movies where the only way to survive is to possess the ability of precognition. The fact that the sloth you just picked up wants to murder everyone in your home and can read and drive is not something any sane person would suspect. That sloth wasn't turned into a killing machine, it was one from the very beginning.

The thing has a genius-level IQ for a wild tree dweller. It can operate a vehicle, navigate its way around a computer, and dispose of its human victims. The sloth can survive being bludgeoned, stabbed, and shot repeatedly. This critter should be in the Mission Impossible staff.

It just seemed like the sloth would be smart enough (what with the reading and writing comprehension) to understand her circumstances and not go "total annihilation" on the bystanders.

Sloths are wild animals. This one might be smart but the fact it was able to do anything unwatched is crazy.
