The loop starts as soon as you enter the town / diner. Everyone seems to have a character who has visited the room and is caught in the loop (the host at the beginning frantically asking how they got in, the waitress at the diner warning them not to go) and a character who isn't caught in the loop or their past self (the host just normally hosting the escape room, the waitress coming out of the bathroom) just how there's a Karen that's aware of the escape room and one who hasn't gotten there yet.

But she didn't on the previous loop, so why would she this time. If they made it to that stall in the previous loop, that mean they had the same knowledge at their disposal. The fact she didn't before predetermines she wont here, because no new info or variables is introduced to the loop at this point. There were only 2 chances they had to break the loop. One was for the stupid chick not to give the exact same message to tyler in loop 2. In iteration 1, the call before tylers death has someone else or nothing on the line. She calls the past after his death, she hears herself (so she now knows its a time loop), and then hears her somehow alive boyfriend tyler, so she warns tyler to leave thinking it will save him. Loop 2, seeing that didnt work, she warns him to stay, breaking loop (the message should keep changing as new info is acquired each loop). If she says the same thing twice in a row tho, for some inconceivable reason (which she must have in one iteration) it seals the loop forever. The other chance was the very first iteration, karen warns herself, choosing self sacrifice (she will cease to exist, unless there are parallel universes/timelines), and past karen heeds her. But clearly she didn't, and never will because no new info can enter the loop.

Problem is, once things goes too supernatural, it's pretty much impossible to actually win. When there are no loopholes or alike to abuse you are done for. Especially with something that can trap you in a time loop and teleport you around. Chance is they lost the moment they signed the contract, not knowing what was written on it it's hard to tell, but at least lots of lore actually revolves around even supernatural beings needing some kind of agreement before they can affect you.

I always like to defend the characters for their ignorance and naivety in these sorts of videos. People always say there are clear red flags and better decisions should've been made, but that's not always the case. So here's my defense for this film: 1. Michael not contacting friends and loved ones about the plan change isn't unusual. Who does that? It's not a major change. They aren't going from Chicago to Los Angelos, they are just visiting a different source of entertainment in the same town. 2. Firstly, the metal bars installed over the interior of the back windows in the main entryway: It's very possible these are props, installed to give the escape room a more realistic feeling. 3. Grabbing the customer IS kind of odd, but could be attributed to overly enthusiastic acting. Considering that the waitress at the diner also played along with the 'act', it's clear this place is at least somewhat known, and may be a source of pride in the area. This would give more credit to the receptionist being overly passionate about the pride of the town. 4. Lack of payment ahead of time IS really suspicious. 5. People don't expect their tea to be laced. They've heard about the existence of the escape room from the diner woman, so they are more prone to believe that this is actually a legit escape room. 6. Cell phones not being allowed is actually understandable. Not all escape rooms allow phones, either because they could be used as a light source, ruining the atmosphere, or mabe because they don't want you to take pictures of quizzes and mysteries and create a legit walkthrough. 7. If the contracts ARE illegible, that's a concern. But are they really illegible? If they aren't, I haven't been to an escape room, and I didn't know how long the contracts should be, so if it's their first escape room, the length of the contracts itself wouldn't have triggered red flags. Also , I doubt the contents of the contract would prevent the antagonist from murdering you since he's not planning on abiding by it in the first place. This was actually a mistake from the antagonist side, as he could've easily provided a more legitimate contract paper and had them sign it just as easily, and got a few more picky nerds like Nerd Explains because of the legitimacy of the contract. 8. No emergency exits: I've never been to an escape room before, so I didn't know there should be emergency exits in each room. I know there should be easy ways in and out, but I figured they'd be disguised on the inside so that they don't break the ambience of the place. I thought these would be easily opened from outside, so if anything happened, a staff could open that door and let the customers out. We must remember that not everyone has experience with escape rooms. I haven't seen the movie, but the dad and daughter only came to this escape room as a replacement for the original plan, so they aren't huge enthusiasts unless that was otherwise mentioned. In which case, they too wouldn't notice the lack of escape rooms as odd, and assume it's hidden from the inside, like I did. It's also possible that this was a privately owned escape room, and possibly illegal, but not necessarily malicious. 9. I agree that they should've knocked down the starting room door somehow after they found that the safe word doesn't work. But I also believe that it'd be one of the strongest doors in the whole place, so after trying my best, I may give up and go through the rooms. 10. Going to extremes like destroying lamps and furniture would be a good idea if we were sure there was really a murderer after us, but if we are uncertain, we wouldn't want to risk having to pay for all the damage. Maybe that's what was written in the contract, and that's what they were going for. "Any damage done to objects in the escape rooms are to be repaid by threefold of the original price of the said object" or the like. We don't know, we didn't read the contract. Since we don't know, we wouldn't be willing to try that. 11. If Karen thought it was Josie calling her, it reinforces the possibility that Josie getting stabbed was just an act, and that there isn't really a murderer. In this case, it would be expected that "Josie"'s strange behavior is another part of the act and that following her would lead to more clues to escape the escape rooms. 12. Since the group was told Josie is okay, I wouldn't have used the grandfather's clock to ram the door. If the others did, it would make me concerned about the contents of the contract, as I mentioned in 10. Since this is the case, I wouldn't force previous doors to remain open, in fear of violating something in the contract. 13. Grabbing a weapon upon hearing the growling is a good idea, but it is a secondary priority. Given how terrifying the situation must be, most people wouldn't have the mind to think about grabbing a weapon. It's also comes with a risk as well, as the 'murderer' may remember the locations of everything and figure out someone was there. 14. I have no defense for Melanie getting separated from the group. 15. Totally agree with Melanie and the maze. Once you start teleporting, you KNOW something's up, and you have to take drastic measures. 16. When you are panicked and in a hurry to climb the ladder, you try to climb it as fast as you can, not necessarily the safest way. This means her arms were focus on going up instead of hanging on. This makes it very hard to hang on when her foothold suddenly breaks. 17. Once I realized the doors close even when members are separated, I too would start jamming doors. 18. I'd also be suspicious of how Andrew found Karen, but I'd have suspected that he's actually a part of the staff here. Remember that everyone who's alive haven't actually seen one of their own die with their own eyes, so there's still the possibility that this is all just a really twisted, realistic horror escape room in their minds. 19. Michael was clearly not in his right mind with the painting. He was probably still entranced by it somewhat when he got into the painting, perhaps in some sort of hypnotic daze. He probably couldn't help it.

I'd say you are pretty spot on Though will add a few things from someone that has done quite a few escape rooms (in Australia not the US so laws will be similar but not exactly the same) Contract, never signed one in my life, if they had me sign some kind of wavier I would be suspicious that its dangerous, otherwise the exchange is under general goods and services law of 'they provide service and you pay them for it' all legal responsibilities are on them to make sure its safe, and that anything they don't want you to do is told by them up front, but not once have I ever had to sign anything Payment, depends some you pay afterwards some you pay before, I would say most have had us pay afterwards as the rule but with large discounts for booking in advance which does require payment up front, I'd say its a lot like restaurant rules you normally pay after as you may not enjoy it and ask to finish early which means they need to refund you etc, I'm guessing the business logic is just better to do it afterwards since people will argue about payment less once they have 'eaten the whole meal' Never been to an escape room without an emergency exit that has a sign, and the door being unlocked, also pretty sure every singe time I have been the attendant has always made it very clear along with the standard introduction and the "nothing needs to be disassembled, if it is supposed to come apart it will be clear" lines, where the emergency exit is, and that it is not part of the game (there was one where we were all locked in separate cells at the start and had to figure out how to get out, thats prob the closest to no emergency exit access but was clear we could ask to be removed, and I suspect that they had a remote emergency unlocking as well) Phones, never been to one where they took our phones, normally they ask that you leave them in an individual locker that they provide for bags and other personal belongings etc, but never require it, the rules are normally more "Please don't use phones, if we see you using phones than we will dock you points, and it ruins the fun for everyone else playing with you and yourself" Also have been 'grabbed' by attendant before, but was generally pretty understandable (for example being blindfolded and lead to the room), I wouldn't find it that odd, and think I would think what you said that they were just being a bit more over the top given that the escape room is much more than most other escape rooms I am yet however to have one where I teleport or time is weird, or they drug me

Fabulous job as always Nerd Explains! From what I can tell, there is nothing that can be done to change the time loop. The loop of Karen and Michael is much larger than that of Tyler and Melanie’s. However, it is almost impossible to say when exactly the loop starts and stops. I would be curious if someone did a deep dive of the other paintings in the house. Obviously the house/inventor has serious control or hallucinogenic abilities that allow not only control of the house but the manipulation of scenes/senarios outside of the home (i.e. the diner, their car, the river with the tree painting). I don’t believe they have left the house at all. Everyone there in the diner, the waitress, are all in time loops of their own. I don’t believe coming in contact with your future time loop self would stop anything, maybe minus that particular time loop itself. There is something up with Andrew. He knows too much. So either he has been through his own loop enough times and is aware of the situation that is happening, but chooses to stay quiet, or he is deeper involved. It just doesn’t make sense why he and Michael split up for any reason. It doesn’t look like they were forcibly separated, and it honestly seems like he is well aware of what is going on versus the others that are possibly hallucinating throughout a lot of it. Something is just off in his case. I would be curious if he is just another victim or maybe he is the inventor? It’s a stretch, but could be explained with the fact that we don’t ever see him die or a body. I think there is only one safe bet to avoid this situation. When your gut is literally screaming at you that something is wrong, you should listen to it. I am not exactly sure what father walks into this house and thinks his daughter is safe signing a contract that is hand written and drinking a dry iced chi latte. The bars on the inside of windows is a HARD NO! Not to mention Karen is literally glued to that phone, and she doesn’t think to google this “escape room” especially after the waitress makes comments about disappearances and all that. Really? I would never just show up to an abandoned looking house and think to myself there isn’t anything out of the ordinary while the doors are locked? Where did they get the money to set up an elaborate escape room in this dusty house, especially since it was only advertised in the local paper? I am sort of surprised that no one thought to maybe inflict some pain to see if it was possible to “wake up.” I mean it’s worth a try once they realized they were in the time loop. Notes from this: 1. Trust your gut! 2. Be observant! 3. You are fantastic Nerd Explains!

I think the diner is the point of the loop. The second you enter is the second you start. I think if you "escape" by the "master key" you meant some condition to the escape to meet the "Help the people escape" I think the master key is just a normal key. I feel like the rule of 1 hour is actually in that hour you have to save everyone in the room with you or you're stuck in the loop. Tyler is the perfect example. You saw him dying, the existence of the loop, him being taken away, and him hearing/seeing things. His condition is like 'Don't leave the group' which you have to watch so you know what to fix for the next loop

The bathroom stall scene reminds me of an old point-and-click escape room flash game called M.O.T.A.S. I wonder if it was inspired by that? For reference, you need to take a space suit from one of two doors but one is jammed shut anyways. It turns out later that you go back in time to that point and hold the first closet shut from inside in order to prevent a time paradox as your past self takes the second suit that you were forced to take earlier. Given it was one of the early “escape room” games I wouldn’t be surprised if it was directly inspired

I figured it out. The entire town was lured one by one to that escape room. All of the town is stuck in a paradox and they try to get visitors to get them out. That’s why the diner lady looked nervous but happy to help at the same time. If their past self is dead but their current self is alive, that means someone else has to rescue them. So the riddle is that you must prevent anyone from dying in your visit to the room or risk going back in time to rescue them without being seen. The paradox is that your future self put you in the situation to begin with so you have to remember so you can prevent a repeat and risk getting stuck in a loop.

My craziest escape room story has got to be this one in Belarus called contraband. The quest itself is pretty similar to a lot of other quests I've done. The real scary part was at the start. You see, instead of just walking into the room by yourself, one of my friend's parents just told us to wait near this regular-looking apartment building. Keep in mind, it was around ~8-10 pm, in the middle of winter. Barely any people around, very cold, very dark. Not sure how long we waited but it was around 10 minutes. Suddenly, a van pulls up to us and two people get out and yell at us to "Get into the car!". The van ride lasted around 10 minutes from what I remember and things weren't looking great when we got to the "quest location". Obviously, we were blindfolded so all I felt was stepping out into the cold outside, then being brought onto what they said was a train. They told us to remove our coats, the lights turned off, we got handcuffed to a large bench and it finally began. From the moment we got picked up to when our group made it to the second room, I wasn't 100% sure this was an intentional part of the quest. As I said, the escape room itself was nothing too special, but it was a very memorable experience.

I think that the diner is an entry point. Perhaps the town is in a time loop as well as the three others in the house. Josie's shock proves that Michael and Karen aren't supposed to be there. Maybe at the time that Michael and Karen entered the house, the town had run out of victims or the ones sitting in the diner have decided not to go to the house locking everything in suspended animation until two more players joined the game.

I think there is one big hint you missed - that they were asked to ditch their phones at the start. This implies that their phones *were* useful somehow and could have enabled them to break the game. Your first advice to hold on to them is good. Once they were inside the house, I think this fact is still useful - it tells them whatever is happening isn't completely magical and all powerful. They could have tried attracting outside help by starting a fire, say. Another idea is to use the projector to try to short out the electricity in the house.

There is just no chance of winning like in this movie or silent hill because even when you apparantly "won" you can still be in a parallel universe. Hey, Nerd Explain, the reason for the no cell phone thing has nothing to do with No Escape Room being a horror (although might as well be a normally is the common theme in horrors with either broken cells or no services etc). Cell phones aren't normally allowed in escape rooms in real life due to cellphones can be used to ruin the fun and excitement of the escape room. Its even explained in Escape Room (2019). I actually looked it up because confiscating cellphones is a common thing in the Escape Room theme movies I seen and decided to see what they said in Escape Room (2019) about why cellphones aren't allowed is true

They were definitely stuck in the loop (or some of them) when they sign the contract, if not sooner. I watched the movie after this and noticed there were clues to what they'd run into and even their deaths in the opening video shown to them, namely there was a distinct slide showing the boyfriend's death that looked like him. (I also think that the others, except maybe the father and daughter were already caught in the loop, if not they might all have already. Since there were no cars there, the detail with the film, the other guy knowing too much, acting weird, other things not mentioned in the video, etc). Edit: alternatively or additionally, they were stuck/"lost" when the first guy ran out (because of the story they were told by Josie and again, more things in the movie but not mentioned here).

I think the second they entered the house they were done for. The Explanation in the beginning of the “game” says the town was having supernatural visions and they finally realized it was centered around this house. I think the surrounding areas are affected and work to lure people to the house, but I feel like once you cross the threshold of the house, you’re trapped. The bottles of hallucinogenic used by Shamans to connect with the world beyond is most likely what was in the “tea”. And the disturbing images in the beginning screen reel were directly related to all of their “hallucinations” (i.e. the tree and the river with the woman, the giant dog/wolf etc.) The message was “5 villagers came to investigate and you must save them to win.” I wonder if all 5 had followed the rules, and won together, if they would have been released from the houses grasp. Like they ARE said villagers. I’m not sure because that first phone call that sent what’s his name running was basically a self fulfilling prophecy and he wouldn’t have run if she hadn’t found his body and then told him to run. So maybe it’s hopeless.

Geezus christ, this one is horrifying. I don't necessarily think that the cliffhanger ending is all that good, but at the very least this one is definitely unbeaten and as you pointed out it's impossible to tell when you were screwed.

I feel they could've lived by just reading the contract. Looks off then don't sign and leave. If for some reason you can't then im sure everyone else would probably decline as well.

one of the paintings on the wall is "the crying boy" which is infamous for being cursed and actually producing physical tears even though it's just a painting. Nice subtle touch to the movie
