How to Be Safe in the Abyss-The Work with Byron Katie®
Iñaki describes to Byron Katie how he becomes fearful when he understands that thoughts create his world.
"Walking down the street," Iñaki says, "I understood that my thoughts create the world I experience. Then it felt like an abyss was opening around me, like a pool of nothingness. With this feeling came fear. Fear of nothingness, of dissolution, of disconnection, fear of being alone in a cold and unfriendly universe, like an astronaut cut off from his spacecraft and the world, lost in the nowhere."
"The moment you fear what you perceive as the abyss," Katie says, "you frighten yourself back into this false world that you see as safe. So there's nothing enlightened about it; it's just one more terrifying thought. No different. But it's enough to keep the ego strong and identified. So let's prepare for that unfriendly universe. Get still, and imagine yourself as that astronaut. There's no way back, no help. You're drifting away. You're never going to see another human being or get help. And you're not even going to die. This is forever. What do you want in that moment?"
"I want to feel safe." Iñaki says.
"Other than what you're thinking and believing, are you safe?" Katie says.
"Yes," Iñaki says, laughing in recognition.
"Someone said, 'Imagination is everything.' Your imagination frightened you, not the abyss. The abyss has a terrible reputation. It's so beautiful. And what I love about the abyss is that it's an opportunity to do The Work. What is truer: "I shouldn't trust this?" or "I shouldn't trust my thoughts about this?" Whenever we believe our thoughts, we're out there in the abyss. 'The abyss is cold, terrifying, empty, forever, disconnected.' One turnaround is: your thoughts are cold and terrifying; they would keep you from such a beautiful experience. The next time you're in the abyss and frightened, capture what you are thinking and question it. After questioning it, the abyss just becomes another place to be still. All you're going to discover when you're alone is yourself. With people-without people-fear is fear. You know how to question it. And people, like the abyss, are your imagination. Just like the abyss, we are not who you believe us to be."

This is one of my favorite videos on this channel. With her clear questions, Katie gently cuts into, with a razor-sharp precision, the nature of mind. Her each question and observation are, literally, mind-stoppers, heart opening. There is no way one can continue to keep attaching to self-inflicted deceptions after them. She lovingly goes on stripping mind away -appearing here as this man- of its innocent tricks, and genuinely guides mind/him through the feared, never-ending dark abyss created out of its (mind's) wildly-imagined, self-inflicted delusions. Trick after deceit after disguise after maneuver is gently, yet firmly and unshakeably, with "get-real-man-here-now," no-bull, forthright, loving guidance. Watching this video repeated times keeps on revealing to me the rare wisdom and brilliancy of how Katie conducts mind -again, appearing here as this man- out of the ignorance and fear it/he is incapable to continue to hold together once he answers just a few simple, to-the-core questions. Remarkable. Watch it, if you do want to learn how to find what will come out of the darkness of the abyss of beliefs you have innocently been holding as your own.

I had the exactly the same experience, and I came to the same conclusion! I was so frightened....but now I am not any more....it's great to dive into abyss...

Dear Inaki & Katie, this was a joy to watch as just about everything that I fear, when you reduce it down to the lowest common denominator, it always comes out to "I am scared, I feel alone and I need someone." How I could truly relate to this. Thank You for showing us that at our core, we are so much more alike than we are dissimilar. #OneLove

Katie, thank you for saying the concept "this is forever"--I had to laugh out loud about your description of the astronaut. I think this mans experience was real and scary and he has discernment. I'm thinking of when he says at 1:12 " I fear that by stepping into that pool and leaving behind my dreamworld I would not find the real world but no world at all." I think at this point BK could say...." you might be right". It feels like a double conversation, It's true, our thoughts can't be trusted and can cause us suffering. But that's not what he is talking about is it. Come on! I know I will come across as unenlightened, but really who wants to be OK with being lost, or not, floating through a cold dark isolated forever. Ok it might happen, so we need to be OK about it? No we need to avoid it. Non-duality is trendy, but there's no good, no evil, it all just is? Where does that leave you when someone takes your baby, (ref to the bit in BKs Losing The Moon book about the holocaust) - to a place of peace apparently. Cos its all good. "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" Isaiah 5:20 Jesus is the WAY the TRUTH and the LIGHT. Yes, we need to turn from our selves and to our loving heavenly father and to Jesus who promised to never leave us or forsake us. God our creator is real, we have all broken his holy law, and and we need to turn to him in humility and accept that Christ has paid for our sin by his death on the cross and conquered death and rose again so that we will be with him where he is and be like him 18.37 "every time you hit a truth its like you leave the world of children and step into the magnificent, the mature" . Jesus said “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3-4 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.Luke 8:31 Even the demons fear the abyss. Jesus help us see truth from counterfeit, open our eyes so we can see you and know who you are. Comforter, redeemer, deliverer, mighty God.
