Another very polite and appreciated thing that can be done after a dinner invite is to write a thoughtful email or note to the hosts thanking them for their company, food and friendship. Canadians truly appreciate being thanked in writing for their generosity. Writing a thank you note might be an interesting lesson too.

Many often I have situations like this when the roommates fail to off the light at night, open the door, switch the AC off and put their masks and dirty clothes on my bed, I usually say politely could you please on the AC, could you please on the fan, could you please off the light, could you please reduce your voice, could you please reduce the volume, could you please put your clothes in the designed place, etcetera but usually all tries get in vain at the end. Thanks

Hi Jen, thank you 🙏🏻 for this great lesson. I was thinking hardly about the question of the day, but I can’t recall a moment in English that I’ve been using a polite sentence. 🫣 You see, I’m Dutch and we always say what we think. That’s extremely rude in the ears of Canadian people. This lesson is enormous helpful to change my way of talking to people in Canada. Please forgive me, but I’m kinda rude in my language, although it’s quite normal to say what you want in the Netherlands 🇳🇱… ☺️

Hello madam, I have studied binomial expressions that some words are fixed. Like; day and night, ladies and gentlemen etc we can't say gentlemen and ladies. I heard a speech in which a female says sisters and brothers. Is this ok bcz it was said by a female? Brothers and sisters or sisters and brothers? Do they depend on male or female speech ?

Hi Jen!First of all,let me get on to ‘ Question of the Day ’ . When one of my fellows of the English conversation club I belong to asked me to go to a drinking party,I refused his invitation politely with gratitude like below. “ I really wish I could, but I'm going to have to decline.I already have other fish to fry.” I think other possible ways to turn down someone's invitation are; ① I'm sorry to say that I am obliged to decline. ② I hope you'll understand why I must decline your kind invitation this time. I guess the sap is starting to run in Toronto. However, you have to wait for another month to enjoy a cherry-blossom viewing, right? Do you go out for a walk with your husband these days? I bet you sprang into action. I feel as if I were hearing the sound of a spring in your step. How’s the practice going for your performance on stage this month? If you're stuck in a rut by any chance, why don't you go with the flow? Anyways,I wish you steal the show by your acting with flying colours. Hang in there and take it easy until they bring down the curtain! I hope the play will get an immense success. Have a good one! Ikuo from Japan.

Hi Ikuo☀️. Thanks for sharing about how you politely refused your club member's invitation. "I really wish I could, but..." is an excellent choice🤗. Actually, all three of your polite examples for declining an invitation are great and sound slightly formal👍🏻. Although, telling someone you 'have other fish to fry' actually sounds a bit rude because it is like saying, "I have more interesting / more important things to do.😅" So to be polite, I would avoid using that expression when declining an invitation😉.
