How to Be Hopeful About Doomsday

Or at least...not hopeless. We are faced with a number of tremendous challenges and none of them will be fixed over night. Science might be fast, but scaling and implementing is slow...and slowest of all is human culture.
IT'S HARD!!
Anyway, here's the video of the unveiling of the Doomsday Clock: • News Event: 2022 Dooms... my bit starts at around 30 minutes in!
And here are the three things I called out in this video:
The Prison Policy Initiative
David Roberts - Volts.WTF
Fair Fight - fairfight.com/
When I'm diving into a subject for the first time, I understand that I'm going to be confused, and I'm always ready to pause whatever I'm watching or listening to or reading to google something so that I can understand it better. It takes time, but I love it, because I'm learning the whole time. And it means that I'm going to know something that like 0.00001% of people know, which is going to make me way better at being effective but also compassionate!
And it makes me more curious and less mad!!!

Honestly, I strongly feel like delving deeper into something you're already worried about when you're already overwhelmed is a recipe for anxiety and depression. Maybe looking at somewhat opposing points of view to realize that there are things you worry about that others don't, but it might also make you angry. I think taking a walk, or reading a novel or getting together with a friend is a much better idea. Sorry Hank!

@@Nelle4ever "The hope is in the doing." -Rebecca Giggs Reading a novel or taking a walk is a short term coping mechanism; structuring your life to reflect your values is a long term strategy for managing depression and anxiety. For me that meant going back to school to study climate change science, then becoming an environmental educator. Before I was doing those things I was fundamentally happy every moment of the day, even when I managed to distract myself for short moments.

@@Nelle4ever I think his whole point was about finding a _productive_ way to think about a specific issue that worries you, rather than just sitting and thinking about how much it sucks. Reframing it from just a bad, abstract, looming thing to a concrete problem that you can plan for, work on, and help with. Putting a little section of the world back in your control sort of thing. And like, I get it. It's been a goddamn Couple Of Years, it's totally fine to be exhausted and want to do something nice and not think about the problems. I think this is best thought of as a proposal rather than The Secret That Will Make You Feel Better About The Future, and so naturally it's not gonna work for everyone. But personally, I think the general ideas of 1) figuring out ways to avoid thinking of yourself as powerless and 2) finding things you _can_ take charge of are very good ones, and they're just your own personal happiness and stability, that's cool too.

For all the crap given about "You care so much about X, but what about Y"... There's another side to being a Team Player. That's recognizing that you have a TEAM. In the existential sh*t-show that's created the Doomsday Clock in the first place, every human being on the planet is a part of that team... meaning we have 7 BILLION people invested in among ALL those problems to be worried or passionate about. That's a plenty big team! I have only a certain bandwidth of my mind, body, health, and lifespan that I can devote to much of anything. It's probably a good thing that I'm not stuck "carrying the whole of the human race" into tomorrow, because I'd probably suck at it and drop that proverbial ball... (or just throw the damn thing away) SO maybe MY passion is best put to X, and YOU (or some damn body else) is far better suited and powerful for passions on Y... as it SHOULD be. ;o)

As someone who is inching back a bit from absolute pessimism of the future of humans, I've come to trust in 5 backstops: 1) Culture is always changing and with it the opportunity for progress, 2) history is hard to completely lose, 3) humans as a species are quite resilient and so may depopulate, but will be hard to eradicate, 4) life on earth is especially hard to eradicate and so in the billions of years left a sentient species may have a better shot, and 5) even if the earth doesn't make it, the conditions for life in the universe are likely favorable. So hopefully some lifeform out there is doing a better job.

In the spirit of this excellent video, I'd like to make a teensy-weensy correction for you all to be curious about: Human culture is not slow. This has to be, without a doubt - and speaking as a professional social scientist here - one of THE BIGGEST mistaken beliefs about social change: particularly amongst natural scientists. I mean, I get it. If you're politically engaged, and you're campaigning for things to change, it's hard, and it's time-consuming and the payoffs are often small, so it's natural to assume that this experience reflects something profound about the nature of society itself. And it's especially natural to assume this if you're a natural scientist, used to the lighting pace of scientific discovery. However, this kind of gradualism isn't quite right. When you look at human societies in general, it becomes readily apparent that human beings actually tend to change quite often; reorganising themselves suddenly and often drastically - with enormous changes blossoming not just within a few years, but even from season to season. Human societies exist in a state of punctuated equilibrium - we believe the way we live to be natural, and inevitable. Until a revolution comes, upends our lives, and then we all quickly accept the new normal as what is natural and inevitable. Modern society is unusually resistant to these kinds of changes (even though it still does change a lot), and I think reflecting upon why this might be the case is very worthwhile. However, I'd also suggest that, as the world becomes ever more unstable, the likelihood is that societal transformation will come too.

Something that helps me when I feel powerless about not knowing enough about how to solve the bad stuff in the world is to remind myself that even a small contribution is still a contribution. Like, it's very easy for me to be kind to others so it doesn't feel like much to me, but it might brighten their day and make them pass this kindness on to others they interact with. If these people also pass it on, that would mean the world has become a little brighter because I was nice to someone. I learnt that something as simple as having a positive interaction can reduce prejudice between people, so perhaps me being kind towards someone could have prevented a conflict between two people somewhere further down in the kindness chain, or even contributed to solving an existing conflict between two groups

I love this man so much! He (sorry they) built an entire community back in 2007 that was based on people wanting to hang out with them and we all discovered "the community" of like minded people and I continue to come back twice a week every week (except vacations) to be uplifted in hope, reminded that earnestness is NOT bad, and to share unironic enthusiasm with said community. Thank you to the vlogbrothers and everyone in Nerdfighteria.

What's wrong with nihilism? I'm pretty nihilistic, I don't think there is any inherent value or purpose to anything in the universe and life is equally meaningless and random. But accepting that truth doesn't mean you can't find personal value in things. Or that you can't feel certain things are important. Humans are emotional creatures not entities of logic. We can't not make up values for things and give them significance for ourselves. Just cuz the universe doesn't care if life in earth ends, doesn't mean you can't find value in existence. To be human is to live in dichotomy haha I personally find nothing depressing in the meaningless, random, existence of reality. That makes the importance we give things we care about that much more special. Because you found value in something that has none. You found purpose in something that has no inherent purpose. You found your own meaning. That's the power you have as a human, you can give things value, meaning, and purpose, universe be dammed lol

Hey. I don't do a lot of the ol' commenting but I really needed this today so I wanted to say thankyou. I've slowly and steadily worked myself into the opinion that people are awful. Not individuals, individuals are great. People. I am also miserable, most of the time in fact. I have been doing some self-reflection of late and it seems pretty clear to me that my belief that people suck and that there will always be bad apples ruining the pie is a part of _why_ I am miserable. I didn't always have this opinion and I need to get back to somewhere where I am aware of my frustrations and aware that we, as people, can be good. Some individuals will always suck. Sometimes I will be one of the ones that sucks. But always, there will be more people that _don't_ suck and are making the world better. And I needed reminding of that. So thank you Hank. You are such an important part of our continued understanding of the world in which we find ourselves. Today you are definitely one of the ones making the world better.

To think such a short video could have such a profound effect on people. It’s absolutely beautiful. This is similar to how I feel after watching it as well. I’ve learned to think that the world really is just an unredeemable cesspit of nothing but darkness. Not to say that is isn’t chock full of absolutely horrendous things. But the helpless victim mindset I’ve gotten isn’t helping anyone. This video helped me think differently. At least for now.

Hank , you lifesaver! Something I have been worrying over, grappling with for the past four years, basically when I started somewhat meaningfully engaging with the subject of what our future might look like....and this right here, is what I have been trying to answer for myself...I have met the optimists in my life, and went from disbelief to being jealous of their hope. I want to feel positive again....but despair overwhelmed me I guess, and lazy too...instead if searching for solutions,i'd just scoff and move on.. Took some time to be conscious of how unhealthy this attitude was for me, and i have been waiting at the gate ever since, to find positivity around me...waiting for hope to make sense again...it does now! Baby steps! I say this with love and a bit of Hope - Thank you.

I often tell people that I professionally Stare at Moss from Very Far Away. I came back to school to get better at moss staring because I was disillusioned with my career in the natural resources, not because it wasn't important, but because it felt like too much with too little. And I've come to the conclusion that though I may be working on capitol C Climate Change, I'm not going to fix it. We're never going to be able to point to someone and say that they fixed it. But I can stare at the moss for the people I love, and to give people more Moss Facts, and because the moss is beautiful and deserves to be told that. I can get a little bit more information about the moss, and help people to learn about just how lovely it is, and why it is important and, if I'm lucky, help them find that little moss shaped piece of their heart that makes them happy too. We're lucky to be alive at a time with so much moss and so many tools to look deeply at it, and so many chances to use the moss facts for good.

Another version of ""Saying What I've Needed to Say" to John and Hank The Good (John and Hank) You are smart, witty, funny, eloquent, kind-hearted, compassionate, dedicated, hard-working ... You are a role model and an inspiration for millions of people. Your videos are both educational and entertaining. You sow joy and hope into the hearts of millions. Here are a few comments from your KZread audience as evidence: • “I watch these when I am sad.” • “Hank and John always make my days brighter!” • “I find myself smiling subconsciously when I watch your videos.” • “I've been having some rough times lately and watching through these videos trying to catch up is pretty much what been giving me hope.” • “John’s laugh makes my day.” • “My favorite thing: coming home after a long day at school to a new vlogbrothers video that makes me think about the world.” • I think that reunion videos should be an exception to the 4 minute rule too! You can't put a time limit on brotherly love and awesomeness! posted by shina… • I love seeing siblings that get along. Very sweet! :-) by Tai… • Hank's laugh after he opens the sunshade gives me life -by raining… • This is my favorite vlogbrothers video EVER. Does anybody else notice that John smiles a lot more than usual when he's with Hank?? This made me so happy :') by K… • The laughter after "what gets your goat just made my entire existence. Hank and John always make my days brighter! by Jessica… (John): Your laugh is angelic and soothing. (Hank): You show so much passion in your videos, and your energy level, wow! The Bad: (John) You seem to be letting yourself grow old. You are only 44, that is, less than half-way done. (I am much older, but I don't feel or act old at all!). (John) I heard you say, "MY mental illness" and that is not right. I used to talk about "MY high blood pressure or MY fears" and some wise person advised me not to take ownership of these conditions and not to give them power. Instead, I should say, "The high blood pressure… I am healed and set free by Christ." This has indeed set me free in many ways. (John and Hank) Whenever I hear you cuss in your videos (rarely, but still), my heart sinks because it sounds incompatible with your personality (John) and your status (John and Hank). Millions of people, especially young ones, look up to you. And the Suggestions: (John and Hank) We need more reunion videos. Visit each other more often. You could also make virtual reunion videos. We could settle for that temporarily. (Hank): I think you need a little break. Not sure what was going on in your recent Instagram video.

Yes! I love the call-to-action for everyone to pick one problem/cause that they're really passionate about and understand it really deeply. For me, my "cause" that I volunteer for is making democracy fairer in the UK, mostly through fighting for a much fairer voting system (compared to the UK's current First Past the Post system) but also around improving voter rights and voter turnout. I run a local volunteer group that organises discussions with our representatives about it, and spreads educational resources in our communities to demystify confusing democratic processes (that for some reason we do not cover in school!). *Rely on each other* to explore the other problems. I often feel guilty for "not doing enough" for environmental activism, income inequality, [insert any other cause here], etc. But if we all specialise in one cause each, we'll all be less overwhelmed *and* way more effective at addressing all the problems!

A recent death in my family has collided with a moment in which it occured to me: Someday, one of you is going to say "Hank or John, I'll see you on [day of the week]," one - last - time. And like the parent who puts down a child for the last time, or that meme about how we never really stop clapping our hands (just more and more pauses between the claps), we don't know when that LAST will come. I just wish I had the inner ability to find optimism and idealism when I needed it the way that Hank and John can. I'm just glad there are people in the world like them who will share that talent!

"This is the universe talking to itself. DAH!" Great line. Shades of the middle part of this incredible Bill Hicks quote: "Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves."

Hank! Thank you for this beautiful video! I’m currently reading a book about climate change and finding it really really hard to keep a hopeful perspective, but this video really helps

Honestly, this sort of discussion is much needed. I agree with you on the whole people really aren't that bad/stupid idea. It does frustrate me when that's the go-to--especially when it's used to be complacent with the systems we think are unjust. But, things are bad for a reason and not all of it is because those things are hard. There are policy decisions that were intentionally made to increase wealth inequality both domestically and internationally, there were decisions made to stall action on climate change. It's those things, where the technical part of the issue seems more addressable than the political dimension, that have been bringing me down lately. I'm trying to stay hopeful and somewhat focused, but it's been harder for sure. I'm sure a lot of my feelings of hopelessness comes from the side effects of a society in a pandemic, but either way, it's gotten harder to remain hopeful.
