True that. This is why it's important to greet and acknowledge the main representative of each party beforehand and give them the confidence that you know what you're doing, and you can (and will) be trusted. Then, you can manage the parties' waiting to be seated expectations by saying, "we'll be seating you next right after these folks, and so on. You gotta be a little bit take-charge without being rude. This buys you some time to organize your thoughts and execute your next move in a calm, orderly fashion and assign to a table. You should always be aware of your floor and seating chart at every moment on your computer and know which to 3 - 5 sections/servers will be seated next. You already know what section has the big top or the capabilities to quickly connect separate tables for a large party if need be. You know which servers can be "double-sat" without them being overwhelmed. You're already prepared for most scenarios mentally. When you have a moment after folks are seated, you can go look to give a server an extra hand ( like make their drinks on their first table as they're already greeting remaining tables) until the restaurant gets caught up on the flow. I’m telling you it’s very nerve racking, but once you get used to it👏🏼 Your social anxiety is gonna just YEET out of your system. Choked by ATEEZ sksk Thank you! But I ended up crying in front of everyone (which is unlike me) and quitting on my 2nd day. It wasn’t the anxiety that made me so upset I actually got used to talking to people. It was the rude people who were supposed to be training me and being patient with me even if I mess up that made me mad and quit.

Um pinkhi that sucks😭 I too have social anxiety but luckily I got trained by the most amazing people ever like I've been treated badly by most managers at my other jobs because I couldn't speak up cause I was so uncomfortable. So hopefully you'll find a better place where they'll treat you better. Don't lose hope.

I just hate when they want a new seat outside of the one assigned to them. Not only do they mess up the rotation, they mess up the servers. Servers give us so much attitude when we’re just trying to do our best. It’s nasty stuff

Would you hate it more if they simply chose not to eat at your restaurant, and then your manager told you he had to reduce your hours due to lack of business? The guest has choices and prefernces which should be honored, I hate it as a guest when the host/hostess insists where I sit. I simply choose not to return for a next time. If servers and your manager can't work out a deal "hey you wanna pick up this table and I get your next one" until everything resumes to normal, then they are low IQ morons who don't deserve guests patronizing their establishment to begin with.

It is a chain restaurant so that builds more drama. We all put on our Oscar persona on and deal with it for the tips though.

America sucks, Canada is not that different. Something about America that makes people think being as rude, condesceding, ruthless, non-empathetic, and disgusting as you can, is somehow a good thing. Don't worry though. China, the Middle East, and Europe are even worse. I'm in Japan right now, and people don't even get tips, and yet they work hard and help others. They have actual strict immigration in their country so that they keep out all the dumb low IQ 3rd world invaders, and "liberalism" is not even a thing here. Therefore, you don't have a lot of fake people going around pretending they're better than others. It's not perfect, not at all. I'm just drawing a contrast for you. Ultimately, it may be time for you to change jobs if your attitude on the current restaurant remains negative.

Last week I started my first day as a hostess at IHOP on a sunday morning. There was literally zero training and I was just told that I was needed at the front. I had to ask the waitresses for how to do my job and once I got it, my managers were crazy impressed that on their busiest day and time of the week, I was doing amazing over at the host pedestal by myself. I always made sure everyone was accounted for and even earned tips just by hosting. Everyone was so impressed since they've never heard of a host getting a tip by only doing the pedestal.

I made over $360 in a shift once waiting tables. I never bragged about it. Never said anyone was impressed by it. Never called a hostess stand "a pedestal" either. Maybe because I'm humble and I don't feel the need to brag about mundane things.

When I moved to Los Angeles from Houston and went door to door giving out fliers to my online business, I felt incredibly autistic, like I was trying to speak English for the first time. What I learned is yes, I am autistic, and when you are in a position to speak to the general public for the first time, language doesn't flow so easily. It takes time and practice. Good luck

The restaurant biz is full of people who are quick to hate and blame others for anything and everything, get used to it. Additional things you can do as a host is see if servers need help with steps like getting water for the tables initially, or just ask a server if there's something they need done.

I have a hostess interview at Flemmings tomorrow and I’m so excited!!! Currently doing a lil research/brushing up via KZread. Recently had a breakup, so I’m picking up a second job. I know serving pays well, but it’s also a LOT of work (after my day job) and a lot of late nights. I need an easy job with fixed hours and consistent pay. The nice thing about this brand is that it’s corporate, and I’m currently a Tourism+Hospitality major. My hope is that it will be a fast track to management. Everyone starts somewhere! Oh that's funny you want to skip the serving because it's "work" and go straight to manager. That's one restaurant I would never eat at. That kind of stuff is also why guest service has greatly gone down the last 10 to 20 years because of that attitude. But you probably fit the right demographic so they'll hire you anyway.

Thank you so much for your tips, they were really helpful, this will be my second year as hostess but my past job for hostess wasn't really broken down to what all we had to do at the job and this was insightful training was non existent they just said follow the lead, and get the job done. i helped buss tables, and serve very briefly at new years which was eventful but a nice experience my next goal was learning how to serve. ive always been curious about bartending but the jobs i have seen the pay is low, and unless you get good tips i dont think it will be a right job for me. i also like how you said don't be a host forever, yes we stay because we are familiar and its comfortable, but the i agree the ultimate go should be is making more money, i may be rewording what you said but thats my opinion on the subject my goal may be different than others but thank you for this insight it helped me greatly.

@@mxldx7700 i quit after the first week i couldn’t handle it :/. i felt like i was being judged constantly by my coworkers cus i was new to it(which isn’t a reason to quit but anxiety is anxiety) but they never even gave me my check, and the people who came in were very stressful. if you get stressed working by a lot of ppl then i wouldnt do it. i work better by myself than with other ppl, so i started working at chuck e cheese.

i really want a job and none of the fast food restaurants i've applied to have gotten back to me. i'm starting to get a bit bothered by it, so im leaning towards just trying to become a hostess if some restaurants will take me. i've never done it, and the thought of it scares me so much- however, once i figure it out i'm sure it'll be fine. my sister use to host at a place and she used to come home with stories, talking about how her coworkers gave her so much attitude over the placement and such. that scares me. im very much a people pleaser, and i really do not want to upset people. though, you never know unless you try. i'm just going to apply and see if i hear anything back, if i do, i'll give it a go. maybe the world wants me to work in a restaurant industry instead of a fast food one,

I don't think we need a full video to explain that guests will stop coming to your restaurant if they aren't treated fairly, but you're welcome to make one.

I agree with the top comment where the costumer asks to move and it’s crazy busy and it just makes it annoying because we then have to fix it and the tell the server that they’ve been moved. I’m sure they don’t mean any harm but it’s still annoying

Who cares if you're annoyed? You're getting paid so the best thing you can do is view each guest, not "costumer," as a potential to secure your current income and expand upon your career opportunities. The last 3 American restaurants I went to by myself, the hostess was rude to me or the bartender was rude to me. I won't go back there and I just cook more now. Congratulations, your little attitude toxicity has traversed the entire restaurant. Don't complain when people simply stop coming back. Then you'll really get to stay at home and be a hero.

How do I greet them & when I bring them to there table what do I say after

When they first arrive, a heartfelt "hello" and a smile would be good, find out the number in their party. After you take them to their table, you'd likely be handing them menus. When you pass out the menus, before you leave you can say " will be with you in a moment, enjoy"... play with that concept and personalize it, and of course you could pick your manager's brain about it too down the road just to get their opinion, or watch another hostess during training to see how they handle it

Do what you want to do, just get very good and make better money. Restaurant-managing hosts are worth 15+tips but you need to understand your dining room.

$15 + tip-out, you mean... tips would imply you're getting the majority of the tips, which is of course reserved for the people who do the most work, which would be waiters and bartenders

Say something like "We will be able to seat you after the people in line ahead of you are seated and current diners finish enjoying their meal." If they persist, ask them if they would like to speak to a manager.

I've never worked as a host in a restaurant. i'll be starting Next Monday im so nervous, its a 5 Star Hotel.

Man I come from a cook background same company just moved to a more grand location “the downtown location” oOoOh 4 floors I was expecting a BOH position so ya I’m a transfer but I found that I will be placed as a host I’m a bit nervous but hopefully the know about can lead to some management position

They do. So do the food runners and select other staff. However, it's crumbs compared to what you'll make as a server or bartender in that environment.

Rotation is simple as your next then you then you then you 12345 repeat tally mark or star it and mark tables

It' can't be as simple as "your next" since that's grammatically incorrect. You prove a common point, and that is most restaurant employees think they know more than they actually do, and they need to constantly improve their attention to detail. If you don't value speaking the language correctly, try another country or language and see how it works out for you.

If these people weren't so mean I would be the perfect hostess.

I have an interview tomorrow! I've never worked in the food industry so I'm kinda nervous...

I recommend you research the restaurant and learn some interesting facts about it to talk about during the interview as to why you'd like to work there

Can you wear open toed shoes such as sandals or heels as a hostess? I’m starting at fine dining and I have to wear dresses and heels would fit the look.

My tips for anyone out there trying to do anything are this: don't go on KZread and ask a question and passively wait for a response. Not only will you reduce your % of getting an answer, now you are wasting time. Mentally word what you want and then go use a search engine to type in your question, and don't stop reading until you're satisfied with the result. Overcome all your predispositions towards laziness. Then you will be over-qualified as a restaurant host. This has always been my attitude toward work and running my own business which is why I escaped the rat race and quit my restaurant job while all the lazy complainers were left behind, all strategies outlined in my course at servetips.com

Thinking of applying to hostess. I really don't want to but need work experience. Plus I'm shy. Obviously I know no job is easy but they make this look like it is but it seems stressful too And having to memorize tables omg. I do have a good memory but still afraid i will mess up

Practice makes perfect. Study makes a novice a master. Visualize the floor chart in your mind everytime you look out on the seating area. Learn sections of the room in chunks. Try and see a pattern in the way things are laid out. Use your mind, why God gave you one. Good luck!
