Taking responsibility for your emotions does not mean making them go away. Men aren't supposed to be unfeeling robots. The line "Why not choose to be happy?" unnerved me a little, I think that can be toxic if not handled very carefully. Thank you for all the advice and support.

Another great video however I would comment that it’s unfair to say you cannot be grateful and depressed or that gratefulness can reduce depression. Depression is a mental illness which should not be embarrassed about or suppressed. Those who feel depressed and are unsure how to deal with it should speak to professionals and loved ones. The more people continue to (especially men) speak about it and normalise that they suffer (or have suffered) from depression the better. I’ll stress I’m not intending to be negative about this video, it’s valuable but I just wished to response on this one point.

  • @DadUniversity

Valid point. In some of my other videos that mention the topic I clarify that I'm speaking about feeling down and not really happy. Having chronic or severe depression is different and I recommend seeking assistance for it.

These are all fantastic tips. Especially the one about controlling your own emotions. My wife has said some pretty hurtful things to me. Sometimes unintentional, sometimes not. And I ALWAYS react negatively by withdrawing. It certainly affects my relationship with my wife, and to a smaller extent my children. While I am withdrawn and by myself, my children will sometimes come to me wanting a hug or some kisses or want to play. And I reciprocate those requests. When I'm not withdrawn I'm an active father and play with them during my downtime. And the one about unconditional love really hit me. I do love my children unconditionally, and usually when my youngest misbehaves and I send them to timeout they usually want a hug before they go to timeout. And I give them that hug before they go. Yesterday I tried something different and did not give them that hug before they went into timeout. And after listening to this video, I realized that was a mistake. My child was just wanting to make sure that I didn't stop loving them. And now my heart is broken. All in all great video

On the children part sometimes you just have to show that tough love which is always hard because of the love for our children. But if you don't you will get continually disrespected and ran over. Yes we as men needs to keep our masculine frame at all times, but when a wife does things that are inappropriate and you let them know and they just gas light you as if your opinion doesn't matter you have to lay down the law or they will continue to disrespect you as well. And the complementary part, some not all women hate it when you keep throwing compliments their way. They consider it corny or needy. Figure that one out. Btw I've been married for 27yrs so i must be doing something right

Having a marriage that is blissful is possible and kids that are well behaved is possible. I told my wife yesterday. “You are the best decision I ever made”. As a dad I play with all 4 of my kids. Give my teen daughters hugs and do nice things for them. We have a very loving home where the spirit of God can be felt. We pray everyday together, we play games as a family, we eat together as a family everyday. We share and show our love for one another. Consequently life is really really good. If yours doesn’t sound this way keep working at it. I promise it’s attainable and it’s worth it!

I never usually comment on anything but…. I found the tips really obvious yet so powerful. I feel everyday I should be better, I can be better but yet fall into all the traps and pit falls along the way. This has really helped and I feel a mental shift already in my mind on what I need to do. On another note I also feel this as quite heavy on the mind and requires a lot of active thought to achieve, I suspect it will be easier overtime and more natural but may be difficult without an empathetic or supportive family to help me help them, if that makes sense. Thank you for doing these videos, I’m sure they will have changed me for the better.

I know I get frustrated and don’t say anything because I don’t want it to become an hour long discussion, instead I internalize my feelings and it drags me down throughout the rest of the day. I used to be happier, but at some point I stopped treating my wife as my partner and more as a teddy bear. That’s not fair to her or I and I’m going to be better.

When you feel downgrade. And or devalued.. how do you show appreciation?. Especially when the other party says things in front of our kids. Overtime as a father I feel them slowly being brainwashed. Why should a dad appreciate a mother. When it's only to get the kids on her side. And over time our personal relationship rubs off on them. For no reason. I know that parents should be talking behind doors, away from the lil 1s. But it hard when the other half simply don't understand that. I came from a broken home, she hasent. Maybe that is why she feels it's OK? Definitely not. My kids are getting older, I feel like me even disaplining them, she tells them there in the right. When clearly there not. I personally think I may be better away from all of this. I don't want my kids to hate me cause she dose for whatever reason. Like empty the dishwasher fast enough etc I don't know know how long I can tolerate this. I do it only for my kids ar this point. 3 6 an 8

You be you: loving, respectful, and good to your kids no matter what else anyone is doing or saying. People in pain cause pain. I'm guessing there is a lot going on with your partner that they need to deal with. Your children will begin to understand. As for showing appreciation, someone has to be the bigger person. Let it be you.
