The most brilliant stroke of humor in that scene is where Quint and Hoper are comparing exotic shark encounter scars and Brody briefly considers mentioning his appendix scar. So incredibly relatable for the vast majority of the audience that doesn’t have any interesting shark encounters to recount.

In game design (and psychology) we call that the Dip Effect. A moment of minimal stimuli between 2 action/important parts. It helps the brain process what just happened and préparés it for the next part. Also because in a list of things, the brain remember better the first and last elements. Having a gap in between is then good for mémorisation. That's why in Mario games, there's always a long empty corridor after a castle level and before the boss fight.

The Dip Effect makes a ton of sense for gaming... What came to mind for me is in Zelda: OoT when you have to run up that long staircase before facing Ganondorf. No enemies, no puzzles, no action, just a red carpet stretching between the dungeon itself and the confrontation with Ganondorf. Does a great job cleansing the palate and building suspense.

Probably the best movie I've seen that successfully transitions effortlessly from horror to humor and back again is M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs".

Another great video. Jaws is nearly the perfect embodiment of Compelling Storytelling 101. Another film I'd add to that would be Back to the Future. An almost perfect balance of levity and stakes.

Spot-on. Back to the Future is a top-tier example of balancing drama/humor. Hell, it's a top-tier example of how to pull off most writing techniques: structure, characterization, dialogue, setups/payoffs, pacing, the list goes on.

You should send this video to Disney they have no idea how to balance humor and drama especially in the new Star Wars movies

Jaws is a masterpiece that judiciously applies comic relief: when it serves to relieve the anxiety of the characters--not necessarily the audience--from the unbearable tension of their situation--i.e. Gallows Humor.

It's call it dramatically humorous. Between high stakes action, the character recalls constantly getting into trouble with her younger brother as they were growing up. It's a heartfelt, somewhat funny scene. In retrospect, I'd punch up, or expand on the humor a bit.

Sounds like you got the placement right. I gotta admit, I struggle with writing humor because in real life I usually makes observational jokes, rather than building humor from scratch. Definitely an area I need to improve in.

I treat the beginning of each act like a cool down period that ends with that acts climax. So I have a series of climaxes within the larger climax of the story. I know thats probably standard, but thats just how I remember to do it.

I think I’m going to be watching these videos of yours for homework and research for some independent films I’m working on Even though, I know for a fact that they’re not going to be perfect and not everyone is going to enjoy or even bother with them, but there’s no such things as perfect in my opinion anyway And in case your probably wondering what kind of movies I have in mind are a bunch of crossovers of all my favourite characters from different films and cartoons that I grew up with and a few remakes based on my favourite books and films, along with a few original films I’m still in the middle of writing all the scripts and drawing up all the storyboards, while trying to find a cast and crew and get proper funding for each film’s budget, because I also plan on using some old school filmmaking techniques, such as using as much practical effects as possible I know most of the crossovers will be rather strange to some people, but I just felt like making different kinds of movies you wouldn’t normally see in the cinemas and mainly the kind of stuff on the internet For every crossover, they are simply to pay tribute to all the classic movies and shows me and a few other people grew up watching and some of them will be somewhat based on particular events that have happened in my life I’m just hoping that I don’t get sued for this, especially by Disney and some other Hollywood studios

U should see the Carol Burnett parady. Clint, ie Harvey Korman, is hunting the shark in his bathtub. With his line going down into the sewer. Is it set in n.york?. Maybe he caught Moby dick while he was at it. Thanx I now have a better name, and concept. Yours is broader. I call this, did call it, the bonding period scene where the philosophical element, is cemented.

Marvel went too far towards the humor side of things in many movies I found. Thor 1, the humor felt natural. Thor was a fish out of water, lost his powers but not his brawn, overconfidence and arrogance, but overall it was pretty dramatic, he was banished, literally deemed unworthy by his own beloved weapon, etc. Then in Thor III Asgard is destroyed, as Thor and the survivors escape on a ship, surely a moment that should be emphasising the drama to the max, its been his home for thousands of years and he was sworn to protect it and meant to rule and safeguard and his people and now its destroyed and he is king of refugees Then the rock person throws a one liner about the explosion. I was so angey at the bad taste this sudden change of tone left in my mouth. It feels like a betrayal of what this moment actually means for the character and for the people he's meant to lead/protect. ESPECIALLY after how hard he worked to be worthy of that leadership in the first place.
