Happy Birthday Stuart. This is great advice that I have also learned from the amazing partners in my life. As a 59 year old man, and a returning rider, when I suggested to my (current and most amazing) partner I buy a motorcycle, she was very encouraging as she also loved being a pillion as a young woman. She even offered to pay a significant part of the cost as my 60th birthday present. Yes, I am a lucky man and I love her to bits. I tell her daily.

A newish girl friend with a particularly expensive shoe habit was questioning and arguing the wisdom of me thinking about buying another(7th) bike "you can only ride one at a time" she said. "You can only wear one bloody pair of shoes at a time!" I replied 😉🤣

Happy Birthday, Mr Fillingham - and many happy returns of that special day! I was the lucky guy who's wife was very keen to ride with me as a passenger on our BMW. When I wanted to buy the first motorcycle in our relationship (a Honda XBR 500) she supported me in every way, and it was fun to ride for both of us. Some years later we decided to change to a much more comfortable bike, a BMW R 80 R, which ist still in my garage, but upgraded to a 1000 cc. Since my wife died in March last year, riding is not half the joy for me, cause there's nobody sitting on the back seat to tell me where to go and which places to visit. It is not in every relationship that you have to convince your partner when you want to buy a motorcycle. Sometimes there are two persons with the same desire. Love doesn't always mean to look at each other but to look in the same direction.

Many happy returns! I honestly feel bad for blokes who have partners who tell them how they're allowed to have fun or spend their own cash; why marry someone that won't support your hobbies? Unless one is the reckless sort or financially irresponsible, I've never understood couples trying to police each others' hobbies or money - certainly doesn't bode well for long-term relationship stability.
Happy birthday Stuart. It's also my third wedding anniversary today, so quite an apt video 😂 My ex-wife was a complete nightmare, high maintenance, argumentative, loved to argue about anything and everything and also loved to spend money like it was going out of fashion. It wasn't until I met my current wife that I could actually get the financial side of a relationship into sensible order to be honest, and finally have the disposable income available to buy a motorcycle. Now aged 50, I have two bikes in the garage and a wife that has gone from hating motorbikes when we first met eight years ago, to loving being pillion for days out on the Interceptor - I do buy her perfume regularly too 😂
Happy Birthday Uncle Stu. Words well said, never try to pre-guess a woman. Treat them properly and with respect. I miss my wife every day, but still talk to her and let her know what I’m doing.
What also helped me was buying the correct safety gear and doing motorbike courses. My partner has anxiety and is very scared about motorbikes. My friends thought I would die instantly. Just demonstrate that you are under taking the extra training required to keep yourself safe.

Don’t tell her,I picked up my new RT last Friday, parked it next to her car in the garage, she walked past it for two days without noticing.I’ll not tell you what happened on Monday
Happy birthday, Stuart! You're completely right on your method! In the same way my wife came to the store to buy my last motorbike and help me choose the most adequate bike acconding to what we had commited! Happy wife, happy life!!
Happy Birthday , me and the good lady loved this video and laughed loads. She has come with me to my local dealer twice now and on each occasion she did the deal and bought me a new bike. What a woman. Of course I spoil her with the occasional McDonald's breakfast. She's a keeper. Have a great day, Bob

Been there, got the T-shirt and watched the video....I'm now divorced, retirement in España. Happy birthday Stewart. Keep your helmet on but... My wife had always been the driving force when it came to buying a new motorcycle! And if a room needed decorating and as I once worked a sixty hour week. More often or not she'd grab the steam stripper sandpaper etc and get stuck in. My wife Sam could even hang wallpaper! And as for going dress hunting for say a company event, trust me when I say nothing she wore made her bum look big. In fact into her 40's she still had a body shape most twenty year old femails would like. Yep wasn't I one lucky man. Sammy's been gone now for two years through covid. And I miss her every day. But given the choice of going somewhere in a car or a motorcycle, the bike won hands down every time. I'm almost 70 now and riding just don't seem the same anymore. But I keep the faith. Wishing you many more happy years safe riding Stewart!
Happy Birthday! Just had mine a few ago. Pushing 7 decades.... Great video, it always gets me the way your videos give out advice and info that should be obvious to most, but apparently isn't. Keep it up, they're great and I enjoy them and I hope all learn something. Again, enjoy your day.

Yes, yes! When I first met my partner she wasn't really into bikes but I'd had a bike for most of my life. After a period of motorcycle drought I needed a small scooter for commuting and she went with me to a dealership who sold a few alongside motorbikes. As we walked in, I turned left to where the scooters were but she turned right instead 😉👍. Over the eight years we've been together she's become an excellent pillion and literally enjoys riding as much as I do. In fact we're now two-up about 90% of the time. 😁 She loves the research and has become very knowledgeable herself. She gets just as excited as me when we're looking for s new bike. I'm a very lucky man 🍀❤️
Happy Birthday, Stuart! So, 21 again and we've stopped counting? My ex tried to get me to stop motor racing, which I'd been in since long before we met. Even tried to force the issue at a dinner party. Didn't even back off when I advised her not to make me choose between her and racing. She did. The cars have also been gone for some years now, after 36 years in the sport. Happily, my now wife is a lovely and very understanding lady and has been very supportive of me buying my last two bikes. Perhaps the key is to choose the right model - and that applies to the bike, also!
My wife's Birthday today as well as yours. We listened to this with candle light and a roast dinner for two! She says It's sound advice. She says, that she can tell you're a Libran. Balanced views I'm told. Ha! Enjoyed this one most of all. Keep up the 'Birthday tea entertainment, for two.....'
Many happy returns Stuart! Sound advice, especially the last bit. Some will say "it's easier to get forgiveness than permission" but as you say, following that route is a breach of trust - in reality there's no way back from that!
Happy Birthday Stuart! :) I'm in the lucky position of having a wife with a motorcycle drivers license herself. Hasn't been riding for about 20 years except for the occasional kilometer here and there on other's bikes, but getting not one, but two bikes into the family garage proved rather easy in this setting.
Interesting topic! A friend of mine wanted to get himself a CB500F but was afraid to tell his wife. I told him to take her to a Ducati dealer and let her know that he's interested in a Panigale. Then, when she sees the price tag and gets upset, leave the dealership and don't bring it up again. Be nice to her for a while, take her out, wine and dine her, buy her the jewelry or handbag she wants. Then take her to a Honda dealer and tell her you want that little 500. He did it and it worked!

Good one. I think I like my cb500f more than my street triple. Honda made it very ergodynamic, body forming and low center of gravity. They really know what they’re doing. I’m very impressed. Street triple is nice but not as wisely designed. After acquiring the street triple, I appreciate the cb500f even more.

@@jbean530 Those CB500s are not outstanding at anything but they are a very well rounded package. Had a Nighthawk 450 in the 80s, a 2001 CB500S with 57 hp and a 2015 CBR500R. Many riders dismiss the CB500 since it's "just a little 500" - they don't know what they're missing.
Happy Birthday Stuart and thank you for the Great Entertainment!! Fabulous 👍
"Don't get married & don't live with anyone "...Dammit Stuart where was that advice 40 years ago ? HAPPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂
When I bought my last bike I had been given the go ahead so my wife went on holiday with her girlfriends and I went to the bike shop. When she returned from holiday she had changed her mind after discouragement from her friends...er problem. I'd already bought it....it was hidden in the garage under cardboard boxes until I could persuade her round again...at which point I magically rode back from the bike shop one Saturday morning :)
Happy birthday Stuart, have a good day, lucky man that I am my wife likes motorcycles and they're what brought us together forty odd years ago. And after sitting behind me after all those years , she decided it was her turn to have one as she wanted her own , so this year she took her CBT and I bought her a 125 scrambler, which she loves to bits . She's already got her sights on her post test bike when she passes which is...the new Royal Enfield 350 Hunter! And I didn't have to take her to the shoe/bag/perfume shop , just a motorcycle shop ! 😊👍 Happy days !
One thing to mention. Often I would listen to my partners problem and try to “solve it” - when I should have just listened and shown empathy. Sometimes people just want to vent and aren’t in problem solving mode yet
I recall some sound advice on the back of a Puck's matchbox (I think it was Puck). 'The art of diplomacy is letting someone have your way' :) PS - Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday Stuart , 🥃 Excellent logical advice. A long time back I considered approaching it from the estimated "Total cost of ownership" perspective compared to the wife. Turned out we could afford more motorcycles than realised. I kept her anyway , You kind of get attached to them don't you...!! 😞🤣 Ride Safe.

hey happy birthday stuart !
Now age 60, after two wives, a happy life is no wife. Company and companionship are optional. Often now I prefer my own company. The advantages seem to far outweigh the disadvantages! The only person now to have this debate "to spend or not to spend" is between me and my bank account. Happy Birthday Stuart!
Madame raised no complaints when I bought my Interceptor (after finishing the mortgage and drawing down some pension). She admired it enthusiastically when I brought it home. About six weeks later she said to me, out of nowhere, "Please be careful. I do worry about you on that bike". I said "I'm not 18 any more, I'm not going to do anything stupid". An hour later she arrived at my side on the road as we waited for the ambulance and a kind bystander dragged my soon to be written-off RE into his driveway (T-boned. Not my fault). Later, on the kitchen floor, nauseous from shock, pain and morphine I agreed to "get rid of that bloody bike". A steel plate and 9 screws later, she caught me looking at the RE site again. "Perhaps", she suggested, "when you get the insurance you could look at something a bit lighter?". I waxed enthusiastic about the virtues of the 350 Classic. When the consultant discharged me I booked a test ride. I drove it down to the house, parked it on the driveway and rang the bell. She stuck her head out of the door. I showed off the little 350 like a salesman. She said "You'd rather have another Interceptor, wouldn't you?". "Yes". So that's what I've got. She's a saint, Madame.
Payed for my wife and kids to go to Spain for 2 weeks to get my first bike in 20 years
I can attest to these pearls of wisdom. Happy wife Happy life. Happy birthday mate!
Love your channel and this advice is great. A late bloomer at 44 I bought a int 650 in February and it's nearly paid off. Every time I ride her I look forward to more. Thanks for the videos on the first service. That gasket was a b!tch!
Happy birthday Stewart. Your account of your workshy former friend sounds very much like someone I knew. His wife divorced him because he was useless, many unfinished or failed projects that he abandoned. He did marry again, to a well off woman about ten years older than him She treats him like a pet and he is apparently happy with that. All his former friends got sick of him. I should find out next month if I can get my license back - it was taken for medical reasons - I was having seizures. No more since I had brain surgery in 2018, but I need to have medical tests before I can get my license back.

Happy birthday mate. I do have a RE Inty but I pretty much do what my wife tells me, especially after I saw what happened to the dog when he kept getting out.
Happy BD Mr Fillingham! A nice change of pace, some good advice and lovely roads to take in. Well done sir! I have been fortunate in having never had to specifically justify a new or another bike ( never owned more than two at a time) but then again I'm happy to hold on to the right bike for over twenty years if necessary and am only on my eighth bike in total after forty five years. My point is that I have always ensured my wife and children have had their needs satisfied as best I could before thinking of a change or addition to the garage and it's always my wife's car for example even when I paid for it because it has always been our money not mine. I do believe we all largely, create the environment in which we live and reap what we sow etc. so it would be little surprise if a selfish individual finds themselves not always getting their own way in matters of discretionary spending. Keep up the good work.
Happy birthday, Mr. Fillingham. Thank you for your wonderful advice.
Belated Happy Birthday Stuart 🎂. Golden words .. thanks a bunch.
Happy Birthday Stuart, have a great day. My only bit of advice on the subject of wives and motorcycles is to anyone thinking of wandering into the valley of the gold band. The person you are dating or living with right now are what they are and it is both wrong and a mistake to think a wedding ring and a bit of paper will change the person they are, their likes and dislikes ect and that works for both people. As far as my marriage goes we both trust and understand each other and even though deep down my wife isn't a bike person she would never interfere if I wanted to buy another bike or change one, that also goes for buying workshop gear and tools and I would never stop her buying what ever she wanted or doing what she wants and at that we have a happy understanding provided what ever we buy or do does not upset the paying of house bills and general living...........15 years on and the dog house is still not occupied.
Hmmmm, an interesting approach to marriage guidance. I tried to adopt these philosophies over a period of 25 years, after which I realised things weren't working out exactly how I planned (and trust me I did try to adopt your chosen methods of appeasement!). Since the divorce I have now accumulated a collection of nine motorbikes, a camper-van, two cars and life is good, but more importantly, uncomplicated! Each to their own I guess. Happy Birthday👍.
Nice video Stu, happy birthday, some good advice there, my wife has just bought me a Classic 350 Reborn for my 70th, must have done something right over the years. Keep making the videos, brightens up my day, enjoy your birthday.
Many happy returns of the day Stuart! Thanks for the pearls of wisdom 👍🏻
Now that's a wife in your title-screen! Congratulations and happy Birthday!!!
Women like to be the centre of a man's world and do not tolerate competition, and a motorcycle IS competition, so it boils down to jealousy.
Happy birthday Stu and thanks for the video. All I'll say is that I heartily endorse your first piece of advice. After living with five ladies and being married three times over the years, not at the same time obviously, it is certainly easier not cohabiting (tongue firmly in cheek). However true freedom still eludes me as I'm now a 56 year old single parent to a 9 year old girl 😂. All the best Chris White..

I returned to motorcycling a bit late in life. My wife and I have been married for 30 years as of this coming August. I had wanted to buy one for some time but the family, daughters, house and life came first. Last year I bought a Kawasaki Vulcan S from a local dealer. Janet was a bit surprised at the cost, not for the bike, but the rest of the gear, too. She's actually gratified that I take it seriously, ride respectfully and wear the gear with every ride. She's also acknowledged that I waited until we could actually afford it. I'm doing pretty well as engineering staff at a local aerospace company here in the Baltimore, MD US area. I'm also not the only older rider where I work. Respect for family and responsibilities do come first.
Thanks for the advice stu....and of course many happy returns.......

Happy Birthday Stuart glad you got your channel sorted!
Happy Birthday, great video and great advice... Perfectly put and very entertaining to listen to, I've always had the same considerations and never had any problems when purchasing a bike. I also think that its important to involve her as much as possible, even to the consideration and choice of motorcycle... A good pillion seat, comfort and riding position, and a compatible riding style possibly shows your considerate and caring side, well that's what i think. Anyhow have a great day and thanks for the video.
Many happy returns Stuart. 😊
Happy birthday Stu! Good advice as always! There was an area which might have been worth exploring further. I met my wife back in 1978 when I had a couple of motorbikes and not many 18 years could afford a car. We rode many miles together, until I bought a car and we got married and had children. I never rode again, until I bought a bike about 20 years later. We were in the position you described, our own house, I earned enough money that she did not have to work and could concentrate on being there for the family, which was her sole wish. We enjoyed family times out and had a good life. In 1999, we talked about me getting a motorbike for a bit of weekend relaxation. Karen agreed, as it was not a sports bike and I never had wanted one anyway. After having the bike for a while, although I realised that she wanted me to have it, she was so worried that something bad would happen to me. Within a year I sold the bike. Sadly Karen passed away very early and during Covid. With our children grown up, I bought another bike. I like to think that she is happy for me to potter about on my Royal Enfield! Although, I know she would have had a laugh at me choosing a sports tourer first, which was too big and then a Herald (a bit like the Interceptor in looks) which I knew wouldn't have ended well! So, there is the worry factor, if someone really loves you and you love and respect them, then putting them through a lot of worry also needs to come into the equation.
Very wise words for all us males on your birthday Stuart. I even paused your video halfway through, to take time and make sure, our home looked tidy and clean, before my better half gets home from her adventures today. I definitely have my eye, on the next bike potential new bike (2022 Triumph Street Twin 1200) hopefully in the not-too-distant future. Getting the go-ahead and "blessing" form the missus, will make it even better!
