Not many people bother trying to pick a lock, but just in case, one further tip is to put the lock on so that the keyhole is facing down instead of up. Facing down makes it more awkward to access and the weight of the lock will also tend to cause the keyhole to fall towards the bike this way up, whereas the 'normal' way up, the weight tends to tip the keyhole away from the bike making it more easily accessible. It's not too difficult to use the key when the hole is facing down, but it could make picking it slightly more tricky, or at least a less attractive target than some other lock. It also helps keep rain and muck out of the lock.

Back in the day when I was a Deputy Sheriff... I took more stolen vehicle reports when people started their cars in the morning to warm them up and left the car unlocked. Most of the bikes which were nicked were parked by themselves away from other bikes but most were taken at gyms where the perps would just jump out and load them into the back of a truck and bye-bye bike. Great info, Stewart as always. I've used both Kryptonite Disc lock and ABUS Granit Sledge on my bikes for years. I've also added Invoxia trackers to all of my bikes which gives me more peace of mind since it will give me notifications alert if the bike is moved. Here in the States thieves don't care about cameras anymore, of course, they could just be plain stupid and think the majority of people use low res cameras where you cannot make out the face or even a license plate.

Thanks Stu. Motorcycle theft in the USA is relatively low but bicycle theft is very high, especially the new E-Bikes which my wife and I now ride. I see Litelok also makes locks for bicycles including EBikes. Good intel. Thanks.

I just wanted to give a bicycle mechanic's perspective of bike thievery. Lived in a major American state college town while employed in repair and sales at a bike shop that sold many used bikes in addition to new. The local police had a database of recorded serial #'s collated from the local area shops of new bikes sold. But when dealing with thieves from category "B" ( and this was back in late 1980's and early 1990's..) you're dealing with a class of thief that rents a Ryder or other moving van company that sends roving gangs of, let's call them 'thievlets' about the city, frequently to areas where bikes get parked and despite the common use of bicycle U-Locks, they had many tricks and ways to free your bike and disappear into the urban bustle. We always, when purchasing a used bikes would run serial #'s and caught a tiny portion of stolen bikes. Like Stuart says, the rental van gangs end up taking the bikes across the border where they're sold. Not so often the category "A" thieves would have local chop-shops for better components that were sold locally. The police would not investigate individual bike theft, but did put more effort into shops that had breaking and entering theft. Recently a shop in that city had a major theft valued at near quarter million $ in high end E-bikes taken.

I'm always impressed by how many bikes are parked on the street at night when I go to Italy and France. There are vast numbers of them and they are just left parked like cars are. Presumably there are thieves there too. I think the very fact that insurance companies here often penalise overnight street parking has a big impact on the culture in that respect.

Thanks Stuart... great advice (I'm a recent victim so I've listened to your comments with interest). I did help the local constabulary chase the offender; he is now in jail and I have my beloved black Speed Twin "Baldrick" back (now at the dealer to repair the 'minor' damage; seems the thief had a cunning plan and had some fun for a couple of weeks but did not seem to care if he scratched the tank, dented the mufflers or forgot to lube the chain). The Litelok looks good.

I always operate under the assumption of “if they want it they’re going to get it”. All you can do is slow them down, I generally try to make my bike harder to steal than the ones around it. It has an alarm and immobiliser and a decent size and weight alarm brake lock. I don’t really carry much more when touring. It’s just about making them think twice and if they think it’s going to risk unwanted attention they’re more likely to pick another bike.

Nice work (again), Stuart. As an ex-New Yorker, and long-time cyclist, I can't tell you how many times I've heard about bikes getting stolen off the street (including a few of my own), as well as how many motorcycles and scooters I've seen just waiting to get nicked. Now, living across the river in somewhat more-bucolic New Jersey, and with my beloved (replaced) Vespa, my main security device is a GripLock, which fits over the front brake and throttle grip, and is not only seriously tough, but highly visible and drop-dead easy to use; as you alluded to here, the most effective lock in the world is fairly useless if it's so cumbersome to carry and use you're not likely to use it every time you should.

Thanks Stuart for a great video. If I may, I might share my situation. I live in a small block of flats with no garages, so I have to rent a garage in another nearby block of flats. The garage area is unfortunately a bit run down, bad lighting and no CCTV but the garage was in good condition with a garage door defender, that supposedly stops the door from being lifted up. However three lads turned up one night and just bent up the corner of the garage door with a crowbar! They were spotted by a neighbour and Police were called, who to be fair responded quickly. The thieves made a lot of noise and didn't want anymore attention so they scarpered. The landlord fitted a brand new garage door, ( made from tin foil I think!) and TWO new garage defenders. A few months later the thieves returned and had another go. I was obviously a target!.They still managed to kick the door in enough to lift the door over the defenders! Lots more noise and effort was made. They didn't manage to get the bike on this occasion either. I can't fit a ground anchor in garage so I chain it to a Calor Gas bottle and fit a disklock. I have now moved the bike to another garage with better exterior lighting and overlooked by flat residents, with no obvious door security which says there is something valuable inside. The defender systems that are fitted inside the door seem good but are very expensive and there is no electricity for alarms etc. So I guess the lesson to be learnt for garage owners is don't advertise there is a bike inside and take all the appropriate security measures you have suggested Stuart. I would also suggest, be aware about who follows you home when you are on the bike and those guys who cruise around your area in a van! Apart from that all good! Cheers.

Other security products to consider are something like the image4security shed and garage Guardsman security barriers and fitting a ground anchor. Also, chaining bikes together with multiple locks is a good idea at home or when you're out and about.

Thanks, Stuart! Shame that the way some in our society choose to behave results in our having to take care about things we shouldn't need to worry on. Ages ago, I saw a bike being stolen. It was much like you described. I'd say the bike was gone in less than 10 seconds. I shouted, which did what you'd think it'd do, and reported the incident to the person who worked at the entrance of a nearby building, who in turn called the police. What the police relayed didn't sound hopeful. This was in a fairly populated downtown area in a larger city. Had I not coincidentally been looking at the bike, I wouldn't have seen it happen. Prior to the present global situation, I worked in a city for close to a decade and can't recall ever seeing a bike with a lock on it. I never really thought about it until now.

I've got a chain, a disk lock with alarm builtin and of course a cover over the bike. Also got 2 cameras facing the bike, one in the kitchen at the eye level filming only in day mode (color) in case anyone is looking directly at it to have their face on film and one above the window and out of reach that also has a loud alarm builtin which goes off when a person is detected and both are sending notifications on my phone. If anyone is intersted both cameras are from TP-Link (c310 and c100).

For the bikes I store in town, about the best I can do is lock the bikes to each other. I went out after watching and got the chain lock off of the ground. Thanks for the tips and perspectives I haven’t heard before. Incidentally, never used to lock my BMWs, and never had one stolen haha. They do seem to repel a lot of people, which is fine with me. BMW roundel on motorcycle: does not compute. I also tend to just not buy new, or at least not very expensive bikes anymore, and I gravitate towards “weird” and generally unappealing stuff like Ural, Enfield, Guzzi, and Kymco, in addition to the old and faithful BMW CLC. I’d probably be fine leaving the key in the CLC; the headlight design is likely enough of a deterrent.

Thanks very much Stuart, excellent guide to the best approach to bike security. I like the look of the Litelok core, as am looking for a new cable lock and it's weight is the bonus on top of the locking part, I've been to the website and two will 'chain' together, so two bikes can be linked together but each owner has their own lock. I'm off to order 2.

Great video for this type of bike security equipment, thanks for presenting Mr. Stuart. As for me, since I haven't heard about this lock before, what I did with my bike is install a fork and wheel stud lock plus bring along a medium-duty bike cable lock and a disc brake lock equipped with an alarm. All these are being utilized aside from the standard motorcycle lock built-in to my Retro-Classic Bike. But then again, I suppose the best security for a motorcycle is parking in a safe area even if you have to pay a certain amount for the tenure of security.

Its nice you have got hold of a LiteLock Core. Ive had one on order since August and still not taken delivery. Have emailed them and talked to them several times now. The reasons given for the delay are; overwhelming demand, material shortages and the last one was they were waiting for a part for the machine that is used in manufacture. Have given them an other month and if I dont have it Ill be having a refund.

I really love you channel Stu! I'd also suggest getting yourself a couple of Apple Air Tags or similar. They are small and enable you to track what ever they are attached to by your phone. Personally I'll be fitting two to my new Classic 350 as if the crooks find one, they most likely won't go looking for a second. This way I can just call the police and give them the GPS coords for the bike. I believe you can also set up alarms where if the tag is moved outside of an area it will alert you on your phone.

When my bike was stolen, the police didn't even bother to look at the CCTV. Not that it would have helped, but they wouldn't have known that. They simply sent me a letter telling me that the matter was closed and left it to the insurance to sort out. Since then, all of my bikes have trackers fitted so that I have a chance of getting it back before they can remove the device. As I understand it, they will put the bike somewhere out of the way for around 48 hours to see if anyone comes for it. Oh, and the bike that was nicked? A BMW - apparently the big twins are high theft risk these days.

thank you for sharing this video stuart. i had my sym jet 14 125 stolen in march from my home, i recieved a phone call the next day from the police to say they have found my sym jet 14 but it's been destroyed by fire. the police sent me a text with a crime number and stated case closed, well thats no surprise with the police of today as their simply not interested. i'm looking at buying a new bike but recently ive been buying security gear online. i now have 5 chains and locks, a ground anchor, two alarmed disc locks, two alarm systems for the ginnel i keep my bike in. also a throttle lock and a small alarm that you stick or cable tie to the bike, all this will work very well, oh and we are waiting for the housing to fix a new door to the ginnel as this one is old with a dodgy lock hence why my bike was stolen with only a disc lock on the front wheel. and we've just bought those chime door bells that let you know be phone etc when someone walks up your path/drive way, so my new bike will be highly safe. but when out and about i will use two alarmed disc locks, the throttle lock, 2-3 chains and locks and the partable alarm which will be hidden on my bike. so i recon that these filthy scummy low life oxygen thieves will think sod that and walk away then job well done...

Absolutely superb video, learned a lot of new tricks and info, and great to get such insight from the horses mouth passed on to us. This vid is definitely a keeper. Just as an aside, the last very heavy chain lock I had was equipped with basically an ordinary padlock. After a severe bout of rain, which I understand washed some grit into it, it seized up while attached to the bike- nightmare! WD40 sorted it but talk about panic lol, put me right off that type of security system. The locking system on this piece of kit, and being able to get the lock off the ground because of its light weight seems to have overcome this. Thanks Stu, brilliant, look forwards to see your vids next week 👍

Excellent video with good practical advice. Bike security, on tour especially, has been a concern and a few years back I weighed my ‘Doberman’ chain and padlock that I normally use with a ground anchor and it exceeded the recommended load for the panniers. I saw these Litelok cables and as I tour with a mate bought a double pack with weighted locks i.e. the same key. These can be used individually or linked together which can be useful to lock two bikes together.

Mind you, that lock was a strip design and not a thick core design hence it was defeated so easily Thank you for the great video bought myself a Litelok Core to keep my new eBike safe as I live in an area with a lot of bike theft Have a great day!

You can get a very loud motion sensor aftermarket alarm on your bike that warns you on your phone that its moving that way people cant just pick it up in a crowded place without being noticed.

No such thing as an unpickable lock. If they want to make that claim they could do worse than send it to the "lockpicking lawyer", fascinating channel, he picks the most high end secure locks with impunity.

Stuart. Here in the states the tooled up thieves carry battery operated hand grinders with metal cutoff wheels. They can cut through a typical u-lock in a minute or two. Agree with your other points though, make it difficult and draw attention to them.

Now Litelok have the X3 d lock which can resist an angle grinder for over 10 mins. Or if you like made in China, the Hiplock D1000. A good combined duo.

Really good video and very informative. I have to admit to falling into the “lazy” trap of just leaving the chain on the floor but not anymore..! I’m going to share the as much as possible. 👍

I have an issue of Classic Bike Magazine, that has an article about guys who went fishing and found motorcycles in the canals in England especially by the bridges and they would hold them up and there would be all these Classic Bikes that somebody stole and they tossed in the river. One even had a snail in the primary cover that was too big to get out through the inspection hole. They pulled up stolen motorcycles of all kinds from Gray porridge on up.

Very good advice. Shame most bike owners don't heed it. In one of the dedicated bike parking areas in my city centre (which is provided with a steel bar to put cables and chains through) it is pretty rare I see a bike locked to it. In fact most do not have any security at all apart from the steering lock. They will soon change their minds when they return to their bike only to find an empty space where it used to be. When I had a bike I used to chain or cable lock it to something solid like a lamp post even if it was going to be out of my sight for 30 seconds. That's how long it takes for a thief to come along and wheel it away. Lovely scenery by the way, and some great riding roads. Where is it? I couldn't read the road signs. Looks like the Lake District.

I use 3 Almax chains and squire locks in my garage, I’m in southeast London and all the scumbags use the battery angle grinders as their choice of weapon, diamond cutting wheel will get through nearly every chain. Hardly any of them use bolt cutters.
