I am going to assume you haven't used gourds for birdhouses or at least not for birds like American Robins. My experience has been completely different than yours and so I wanted to share it in this video. The robin that nested in the gourd hung from our dogwood reused it twice. There was another gourd, much smaller that hung nearby and a nuthatch took residence. If you haven't used gourds for birdhouses, you really should. Experiment and find what works for the birds in your area!

very informative; I love gourd bird houses. I like to add roofs like those shown in some of your pics and attach rather than hang houses, so they don't swing around. I love natures pottery too! ty for posting

Hi Taija, I use the Proxxon jigsaw with a 5 amp transformer and foot pedal. You can purchase the jigsaw and each accessory through Amazon at a good price. However, if you're interested in purchasing a whole jigsaw kit that includes jigsaw, transformer, foot pedal (very useful!) and blades than check out the link I left you in the video description. The price is the best I've seen.

I grew gourds in my garden this year. They are drying now in the window. I can't wait to try your techniques. What is the name/type and brand of the electric saw you use in the video? It looks easier to use than some.

Do you allow the gourd to dry on the vine? Or do you pick it when it gets to the size you want? How do you clean out the seeds inside for birdhouses with smaller entrances? And do you coat the gourd with something to keep it from deterioration?

Yes, you need to allow the gourds to fully mature on the vine. To clean seeds and membrane through smaller entrances is very difficult. I judge my method when I open it up and peek inside and see how it looks. Sometimes it's all loose and I just have to throw in some nuts or sharp stones and give it a good shake. Other times I have to use one of these tools: www.arizonagourds.com/Tools.html which takes forever. And then, at times the seeds and membrane have all balled up and there is no way I can loosen things up so I have to cut a hole in the bottom with an extremely thin blade, clean the gourd, and then seal it back up.

Hadn't thought about it but you're right, adding some small rocks or nuts & bolts into the gourd and shaking it up for a minute or 2 should clear out the insides

I'm sorry Bernadette, but why are you telling people they can make bird houses out of gourds for birds such as: nuthatches; flickers; kestrels; and especially robins? Flickers and kestrels require large wooden boxes at least 12" deep. And robins? Robins aren't even cavity nesters. The gourd for the bluebird wasn't large enough. What's going to happen is, someone will put up a "robin" birdhouse and will be very upset when a robin never uses it. Please research before you post.

But she did have a Robin nest in a gourd bird house of hers, even though they might not be likely to do so, it can happen apparently. Gourd size, openings, location, ect all have to be factored to get the results you want.
