I had to pause 1 min in. man!!! I just threw out the finish and the accelerator kit because the the small tin was ruined. it was crusty and hard and I thought it was like epoxy guess , without the hardener its no good. what a bummer for me. thank you and now back to the vid
@EverydayBuilds

Those hardener tops like to get stuck on as well. But you can absolutely just use the finish on its own 👍
On walnut you should use two coats for any visible surfaces. It soaks it up and you get a much better finish that isn’t so flat and is more like satin. Their maintenance oil doesn’t do much.

Great tip on using the syringes! I have the same ones and they work great! Have you tried any of the nano coatings on Rubio? I hear it protects better and increases the sheen.

Not yet, but I will be very soon 👍
I’ve used quite a lot of Rubio and have no issues except for the cost. Now, if there were no alternatives, then it’s pay the price. But I was very interested in the comparison review undertaken recently by the Wood Whisperer. The final conclusion was that you could get the same finish at a much reduced price by getting Natura Onecoat. Now, Natura Onecoat is not available yet here on the UK but I trust the Wood Whisperer and so will be getting some as soon as it comes here. For you lucky people on the US, I think you can get it now (but I don’t know how widely). If it were me, I would ask your normal supplier to get some.
@EverydayBuilds

The cost can be a tough pill to swallow. There are a lot of competitors popping up at lower price points. So hopefully that will make wax/oil finishes more affordable in the future.

@@EverydayBuilds it does seem that the consumer has been taken advantage of here. If you want a premium brand, then your product must excel above all others. It does seem that the market take up of 2C over 1C is quite low. That surprises me as, for me, the jock curing of 2C allows me to safely move coated timber (essential in a smaller shop) and prevent dust ruining the finish. I would think that there are quite a few innovations yet to come in the HWO market giving us, the consumer, better choice of better product at less cost
You mentioned using the oil to get more sheen. Do you have to wait until the initial application of the Rubio is fully cured before you can apply the oil? Thanks and I appreciate you putting together this video as it was very helpful to me.
I applied cornsilk, that is what it says on the bottle, the hue is really nice what I am looking for on plywood for a small countertop, I am wondering if this will work on the edge banding as well, ty for the directions it worked very nice and it looks well on the edges also, the texture it leaves is very smooth I am noticing

any advise on using rubio on Douglass Fir? we are getting a lot of weird interactions with the wood leaving a bad mottled look...

I’m have never used it on Douglas fir, so I’m not sure why that would happen. Did you water pop it before applying the Rubio?
Would rubio be good on white oak if I did not want the wood to darken? The best I've found that does not darken is water based urethane. Great presentation.

If you want to keep the natural color of the white oak, I would recommend Osmo clear or Rubio Pure (this will add an amber hue). Osmo clear will change the appearance the least.

No no, NO, Pure darkens a ton and gives a lot of warmth! Natural is recommended shade for white oak, but in my experience some other options should be considered. There are several subtle shades, like cotton white, sky grey etc. All shades darken and deposit a bit of pigment at the same time (since Pure is base for ALL shades, so all shades have that darken+yellow effect, which is then topped by accompanying pigment), cotton white has a ton of pigment that is very light beige, like yellowish white so it makes white oak look naked. Sky grey has ever so slight grey pigment that won't make the white oak look grey at all... @@EverydayBuilds

Is it OK to use rubio on popular?

Rubio has a page on their website that shows you what their colors look like on different species of wood. And you can absolutely use it on poplar (but they don’t have poplar colors on the website). www.rubiomonocoatusa.com/pages/oil-plus-2c-colors?species=white-oak
It took me two or three applications to find out that I’m very allergic to Rubio. I always wear gloves regardless but it seems the reaction of the accelerator and the oil was making the skin on my face and arms break out really bad. Worth mentioning in case anyone else is having that problem but can’t find the causal agent.

The maintenance oil only comes in 3 options. White, black, or pure. How do you know which one to get?
@EverydayBuilds

The way I see it, you pick the maintenance oil that matches the base tone of your finish. If your finish has more of an amber tone, go with the pure maintenance oil. If the finish has a lighter white tone, go with the white maintenance oil. And if the finish is dark/black, go with the black. 👍

How long does does it take for the Rubio to dry

I usually let it dry over night and then it’s pretty safe to handle. But for full cure, it’s 7 days with the accelerator 👍
How a rubro monocoat finish
These types of products are a weak version of the old solution to bond with wood cells for a more natural looking limited protective finish. The old solution is two part epoxy thinned with acetone. The protection increases with the thickness of resin in acetone solution.
I've not used Rubio monocoat, but I've heard that you can't repair it, meaning reapply it, if you've used the maintenance oil. Doing a spot repair won't blend in if you've used the maintenance oil.
@EverydayBuilds
Жыл бұрын
I have heard that as well, but I don’t have any personal experience with whether it can be done or not 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe others can chime in.
@jaderene
Жыл бұрын
You actually can repair Rubio Monocoat, because it’s an oil finish, you just have to sand the area in need of repair, basically a spit repair, compared to polyurethane finishes, we’re you have to sand the entire surface before re-applying the finish!
@glacialimpala

Also you have to vacuum very well after the sanding. The customer who is doing maintenance may not know that vacuuming is essential part before application. @@jaderene

Respectfully I disagree with needing plastic syringes. Eyeballing the ratio in a paper-cup is sufficient and saves our planet from more plastic. I’ve applied gallons this way. Rubio is my go to finish! My one trick is coffee stir sticks. Super cheap and work great! Also always water pop before final sanding!

@aaronblackford981

I would say, having used it limited, starting with the syringes isn’t horrible idea to limit mess ups. Which will cause less harm caused to the planet in remaking same thing three or four times. Once people get used to it, the change to coffee stirs. Or maybe just popsicle sticks, or maybe chop sticks. They are small, made of extremely renewable wood, and not plastic.

Sorry, I'm confoosed. You applied the Rubio, let it dry and then rubbed it off. Fine. But then when you buffed you put on more Rubio.
