    When i use more than one coat, I follow the instructions that blacktail studios got from rubio. They say to wait until first coat is dry, then sand with orbital on lower setting with maroon pad until uniform frosted look. Then you can wipe it off and blow it off with air, no liquids or cleaners at all just air and a microfiber cloth. Then add second coat. You will have much better results.

    Thank you for showing this. I would have liked to see a little more aggressive testing. Such as small shot glasses set in the wine puddles to break surface tension and more accurately portray a typical situation on a table. I'd also try different liquids.. coffee, juice and simple water. Some experimenting with stain removal would be helpful as well.. toothpaste, peroxide, baking soda, etc.It would be interesting to see how, or if any of these are effective without damaging the wood, thus making it possible to spot repair with more mono coat.

    Hello. Thank you for sharing great experiment. My table is a bit rougher than before I spilled water. I wonder that if I recoat Rubio on the table, is it get smoother? or does it need sanding? (As I don't have sander, I would like to recoat if it works.)

  • @Woodensoul

    Hi Aiden. Applying Rubio over the rough wood won‘t make it much smoother. Buy a 240 or 180 grit sanding paper and sand it by hand until it’s smooth. Clean it well with eg mineral spirit, and then apply Rubio. If the previous coating is old, I recommen coating the entire surface. If it was rather fresh, you might be able to do only the sanded part…

    I’m fairly new to Rubio. But I’m noticing as it cures it changes from a nice glass smooth finish to, after a few days, a ‘drier’ feel, not quite as smooth. The differences are subtle, but noticeable. BTW, I’m using American Cherry. Do you notice a difference in how multiple layers of Rubio feels after it fully cures? Also, in this experiment how long did you wait between coats... fully cured (5-7 days)? Or just a few hours? Thanks for publishing your experiment - interesting result!

  • @Woodensoul

    @Woodensoul

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dave. I know what you are referring to, and I did notice this effect too. I think it depends on the ‚hardness‘ of the wood. The softer the wood is, the more the surface gets rougher after drying. I think it has something to do with the wood fiber density and how the molecular binding works. There are a couple of things that can help: 1) Multiple coats (usually 2-3 in total), 2) if that doesn’t work then remove the Rubio by sanding, then sand up to 180 grit, apply sanding sealer and remove the sealer with 240 grit, then start again with the Rubio. 3) the most krass option is to flood your workpiece with epoxy resin to seal off the wood fibers, sand and then treat. I would only do that for end grain slabs (I have a video about that). In this experiment I let the Rubio cure for 7 days between coats. Cheers, Javier

    Have you ever used their Precolor? Just finishing a big project using their intense black over walnut and finding that there is a big difference between one coat and two. Maybe it's the porous wood or maybe the water based stain (Precolor) but the second coat of Rubio gives a higher sheen and so I'm thinking a better protection as well. The finish looks great btw (on a large kitchen island). I also find that a very light sanding with 320 before the second coat helps smooth the finish (makes no difference in the sheen)

    Did you prep it correctly? Meaning using the cleaner? Super important to get all the dust (vacuum will not always do it) as far as I know Rubio does not bind to itself only the wood structure so of you do notice an improvement with more than one coat it is because you did not apply and wipe correctly (low chance of that it’s pretty dummy proof ) or more likely the surface actually had dust on it still and the first coat partially bonded to the dust. This is why it is important to use the cleaner, i hate it to but it last a pretty long time…

    Thank you :D Usually, Rubio doesn't blotch. There are a few exceptions though: 1) If you applied sanding sealer and didn't remove it well, you will get blotching, 2) if you coat end grain and drop blobs of Rubio on it, it might soak in so quickly that it might look darker than other places. Hence I use brushes to coat end grain (I have a video about this). 3) If you don't remove the excess epoxy after 10-15 minutes well, you might get some parts that become all sticky. While I experienced these things, that happens very rarely and depends on you taking care about these things before coating.

  • @Woodensoul

    @Woodensoul

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dawnn. Good question. I have used Rubio both with and without accelerator, but I moved away from the accelerator completely due to the following reasons: 1) It's hard to calculate how much Rubio you will need to mix. Either you mix too little, which is a pain, because then you need to mix again, or you mix too much, which is a waste. 2) You need to hurry a lot more to apply it, because it hardens pretty fast, 3) It's more expensive because you have to buy the accelerator, 4) I found that the final look was subpar compared to pure Rubio (that last point might be totally stemming from my imagination, so totally subjective feeling). The only reason to use accelerator is if you are in a hurry, as it hardens completely within 1 day, instead of 7 days without hardener. As I am never in a hurry (this is my hobby, not my job), I don't use the accelerator anymore. Hope that helps.

    @@skpince Haha... yeah, don't comment on videos when being drunk my friend :D. I don't share your experiences with Rubio. I usually sand up to 240 and apply one coat. After a week, I check how it looks and if I don't like it, I apply a second coat. I love everything about it: the application, the smell, the look. I use it for all my projects. But well, my experience doesn't have to match yours. Thanks for the subscription - let's keep discussing :D

    @@Woodensoul glad you used cheap wine. I used it on a Western Red Cedar kayak paddle (2 coats) and have been in the water approx 10 hours with it....it looks and feels wonderful. Thanks for the video

    @@scottgorman7166 Wow! I wouldn’t have thought that it would work on heavy duty gear that is in contact with water that much. Interesting data point… thanks for sharing
